I do own a business, and i feel if a business serves a good product than construction in front will not stop people from coming. For example, there is a donair store in Maple Ridge that sells the best donairs, if there was construction for 10 years in front of that store i would still go, it is that good. Did every store along Cambie close? No, i see these events more as evolutionary events, the strong survive and the so so stores that are nothing special close.

Since she wants the tax payer (you and me) to give her money and pay 100s of millions (if not billions) more in future projects (again, our money) to build less per dollar due to the likely hood of even more extensive public consulting events and regulations and stalled projects etc... then do you not think it is fare that any money she now makes (after the opening) above her pre-construction sales (adjusted for inflation) is donated back to the government?

i think you fail to see the big picture here, these rulings are going to make public transit projects even more difficult and expansive to see the light of day, and we all pay this price, we pay this price directly through our taxes and through congested streets and packed buses.

Yes i do believe that people deserve a good warning period (which was given) and that measures should be taken by the government to advertise that these businesses still exist (which was done) but then it is also up to the community to help itself. How come the cambie street businesses did not become creative together and maybe organize "construction public festivals/markets" on the weekends durinng the summer or organize other such public meets and events through out the year? Construction sure makes a good spooky scene for a good halloween festival! No wait, because then the residents would complain! Maybe we should blame Vancouver's NIMBY attitude for their failure and not the government...

The LED Platform Signs at the Canada Line Stations would work perfectly on the E & M Lines they seem from the picture at least that they are a bit bigger and they definitely look alot brighter then the current ones.

It appears that Broadway is going to be a 40-metre platform...the end of the platform in this picture, where the roof dips, should be part of the platform if it were to be 50-metres

The fact that many of the stations here are opening with 50m platforms and that those that are opening with 40m platforms have very easy 10m expansions in place are good signs for me. It tells me that the c-car extension proposal for this line is quite serious, and we may see it in the not to distant future, unlike the idea of adding c-cars to the E/M lines.

I wish the Canada line station entrances were integrated into the buildings like Granville Station is. I think they should have had the entrances inside Sinclair Centre or inside Pacific Centre, instead of these entrances in the middle of the street.

There is one inside Pacific Centre. There was supposed to be one in Sinclair Centre but they changed it, I think.

Adding C-cars to Skytrain is not that simple.

First, the OMC can't handle anything longer than 2-car Mark II trains. If a C-car is added, they could not get the three-car train into the OMC for maintenance, and splitting it to do so weould be problematic and time consuming.

Second, if there is a fault on one car on a 2-car Mark II, the entire 2-car Mark II is taken out of service. Where there are 4-car Mark II trains (2X2-car units), one of the two car units can be detached for maintenance or taking out of service. With a three-car Mark II, the entire three car unit would need to be taken out of service.

Third, two-car units offer maximum flexibility in operation. Currently, they can make up 2-car or 4-car trains and in future with platofrm lengthened, 6-car trains. Using three car trains would limit it to a 3-car or 6-car train. Longer trains have more limitations.

Fourth, two car trains can be run at low ridership periods - e.g. late at night, early Sunday. Running a two car train is less maintenance and requires less power. Also, increases safety factor by having the small number of people in one 2-car unit, rather than spreadout over the length of a longer train.

Any decisions to have 5-car MK-II trains (which will require 3-car married sets) or extend platforms to handle 6-car MK-II trains (which won't, just three 2-car married sets) will be made by 2014 when we likely need to order another set of trains. I wouldn't worry at this point though, we will likely need all the current 2-car married sets right now to pair with 3-car married sets, especially as the MK-Is get phased out, but personally I would like to see extensions for 6-car trains.

Appearantely Translink is doing a study on the feasability of using 3 car married sets on the system

One of the options in the on-Line consultation process in for the addition of 52 cars by 2012(over & above the current order).

Yeah, I don't think we need to worry about 3-car sets. Any new OMC that will be built for the Evergreen line will no doubt be able to handle C-car trainsets and we won't NEED C-Cars until we think about ordering for the EG line anyhow.

If they put all the MkII A-B cars into service with no married sets, they would still need to order more for the EG line anyhow.

I wonder, however, if they'll make shorter 50m platforms (expandable to 80m) for the Tri-cities part of the EG line to cut down on station costs and then only run 4-car MkI cars or 2-car MkIIs on the Coq. -- VCC run. 4-car MkI cars are 48m. 2-car MkII is 36m and with a C-Car (which I think is 15m) would still fit all doors on the platform at 51m.

Incidentally, Bombardier's proposal for Honolulu recommends 50m platforms, expandable to 80m.

i think there is a plan for pacific centre to expand into that plaza and it would encompass the station

I would expect not. As they will likely run trains on the Millennium Line, they will need the longer trains. As there are only 6 stations, none underground, and some of them will likely be on the surface rather than elevated, the station costs will be relatively small compared to the cost of the project.

It wouldn't even surprise me if they go for longer 100m platforms to accommodate two trains with C cars.

For the primary entrances, having free-standing entrances means that you aren't negotiating off-hours access rights and you can do as you please - plus there's better visibility / recognition of the station entrance from the street. SkyTrain stations will be open longer hours than most retail / office buildings and having entrances that are through deserted malls or office buildings is less inviting than direct access from the street.
(The examples I'm thinking of are original plans to have Lougheed Station integrated with the mall (next to the parkade) and early 1990s Richmond SkyTrain renders that showed an elevated Oakridge Station veering from the median to a station integrated with the mall.)
I also understand that there are/were problems at Columbia Station because the building owner is responsible for elevator access/repairs(?).
As for secondary entrances - the easier the daytime connections, the better.

Thank goodness the Millennium Line wasn't built with 50m platforms to fit 4-car MK-I trains as originally planned!

To play the devil's advocate here... we don't need 80m platforms today. We're well within capacity on the M-Line, assuming increased frequency.

Anyway, I'll keep EG line comments in its own section.

Can the 50M platforms on the M line handle a 4car Mk2 train?

The M-Line isn't built 50m. That was the proposed length but it got axed for good reason.

Thanks; I thought lines could handle full length (4 car mk2 & 6 car mk1) trains.
