Pentagon Plans New Arm to Wage Cyberspace Wars

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon plans to create a new military command for cyberspace, administration officials said Thursday, stepping up preparations by the armed forces to conduct both offensive and defensive computer warfare.

The military command would complement a civilian effort to be announced by President Obama on Friday that would overhaul the way the United States safeguards its computer networks.

Mr. Obama, officials said, will announce the creation of a White House office — reporting to both the National Security Council and the National Economic Council — that will coordinate a multibillion-dollar effort to restrict access to government computers and protect systems that run the stock exchanges, clear global banking transactions and manage the air traffic control system.

I wonder if HAB will be a candidate for this project, I remember some sort of talk about a command center going up there.

I've been noticing a new building under construction as I drive back and forth on Third West. It will be occupied by Swirl Woodcraft. I didn't think anything of it until I passed their current location. The building they are moving from is in the area where the new Target is supposed to go. I wonder if there is a connection. Is something really going to happen with Target?

Most seemed to agree on one thing: Leave Library Square alone...

Why shouldn't it? This is our city, too. If we just allowed development to go without concern, we'd have lost the City-County Building, the Cathedral of the Madeleine, the Deseret Building and countless others. There also wouldn't be a huge hole right now in the heart of SugarHouse.

I see no problem with a lively debate about a project that has wide reaching implications for the city.

Ultimately, this debate will spur the right decision and hopefully convince Mayor Becker that Library Square is not the place for a building of this type.

Only we are not going to lose any buildings in this case. We are going to lose open space that never gets used anyway. It just sounds to me that no matter where the buildings will go people will find something to bitch about. It just gets old after awhile that people feel that they need to make everything a freaking controversy. I bet most of those people whining have never even used the open space. And what they don't seem to get is that even if the buildings were to get built on the Library Square there's still going to be open space around the buildings. It just sounds to me that alot of these people are making a big deal out of nothing.
While this debate is going on we have a old building that is falling apart and for all we know could come crashing down any giving time. I just feel that the way the old building is we should be messing around and wasting any more time on the matter and get the new buildings built and get the officers out of that death trap ASAP. I don't care what side of the street these buildings will be on.

Really? I've not heard people complaining about the other locations, just this one. C'mon, you're not really trying to suggest every project that gets built in downtown Salt Lake (or the city as a whole) is met with opposition, are you? Because frankly, that's a ridiculous hyperbole and undermines any point you really have.

You might think it's no big deal, but I think it is. I think it's not the appropriate place for this building and it isn't solely based on open space. A project like this is not vibrant and never will be. It won't have retail or residential, it's not going to interact well with the area and that location, specifically that side of the square, should be as vibrant as possible.

You're not going to get that with a public safeties building because its target isn't vibrancy. So put it in a place where vibrancy isn't essential to the success of the block.

That isn't a trivial complaint and stop acting like these people only complain for the sake of complaining.

These are valid reasons to oppose the placement of this project. I think most Salt Lakers feel there should be a new building, but that doesn't mean they can't question the placement.

I think you need to actually read and listen to what people have to say about the project before you begin to type. I haven't heard one person dislike the project for the sake of causing a commotion nor do I think anyone would dislike something with out a valid reason. The majority of people seem to have valid concerns. You seem to be complaining about some group of people who in my field of vision don't exist and seem to be creating a controversy out of their complaints, that I have never heard, in other words I think it's you who is making something out of nothing.

Personally, I think we could use a police headquarters on the west side of town where the majority of the drug busts are. I am not too knowledgeable on the area concerning what land can be developed but some place around, but not next to, liberty park or the parking lot west of the Gateway or maybe next to the UTA office.

I know this part of town is underdeveloped but I think building this in the west part of town will decrease crime. My only fear of this project is if SB81 goes into affect people will be afraid of it no matter were you put it.

Hello everyone! I have some friends coming into town at the end of June. I want to take them some cool places around SLC and the Salt Lake Valley, but I can't think of Anywhere.

I've written down typical tourist traps: Gateway, Temple Square, Library Square, Trolly Square (all the squares, pretty much). But I can't think of anywhere else. I'm thinking the sporting venues, because they're into sports, but I'm still stuck. Can anyone please give me some good ideas?

Besides what you already mentioned in SLC, you are gonna need to head up into the canyons or Park City to see the more touristy areas. It's not like it's that far. Hit Olympic Park, Main Street Park City, maybe do the alpine slide or zip lines, Deer Valley, etc.

There is a relatively new police substation across the street from Pioneer Park on 400 West. Not a huge presence, but it is something and it does help.

I was thinking about the Alpine Slide. I love it! But idk if my little car can make the drive up to Park City. It probably can, I just haven't tried. haha.

And the itinerary is already a little full. They get in at noon on the 25th, and I can't do anything the 26th because it's my sister's birthday. Then I have to work the 27th. Sunday is probably going to be a trip to Lagoon. And Monday will be Salt Lake City day. Tuesday was going to be South Valley day, and they leave Wednesday.

But thanks for the suggestions, and I'll see if I can work them in somewhere.

Some friends and I went up to Park City for Sundance in my Geo Metro. It made it, but I had to put my emergency lights on and drive about 30mph with all of the semi's.

Also, Ensign Peak is always a good idea; nothing beats that view.

Utah is easing its liquor laws to encourage tourism, but the state's most-visited city needs to prepare for a buzz kill.

A review of state records shows Utah is quickly running out of liquor licenses for bars and restaurants, creating the possibility that Salt Lake City won't be able to create for years to come the downtown entertainment district tourism leaders are craving.

State lawmakers, most of whom are Mormon and do not drink, limit the number of bars and restaurants that can serve liquor based on the state's population.

Currently, no more than 361 bars can open in Utah and no more than 546 restaurants can serve beer, wine and liquor.

Blaze, this is one little drive that will be a huge success with your friends, and the end of June is the perfect time to do it. Take American Fork Canyon up to Silver lake Flats. If you have a jeep or shorter wheelbase four wheel drive, you'll want to take it all the way up, otherwise a regular vehicle won't have a problem with getting to the lake itself. The gravel/dirt road is in good enough shape to easily take a lower, two wheel drive vehicle up to the lake. I've taken dozens of people from all over the world, some very famous, who have seen everything, and they all loved it! The drive and destination are both incredible. It takes very little time to get there from the mouth of Am. Fork Canyon. Also, a tram ride up the mountain at the Bird is a great little side trip. Also, take the loop from Park City back through Provo Canyon, and make a pit stop at Sundance. Don't forget the Alpine Slide while your in Park City.
As far as outdoor enjoyment no place beats both the beauty and convenience of the endless canyons of our beautiful metro.
