Cool

That sounds great to me about another grocery store coming in to fill the vacuum of Bruno's. Well do you think of a Kohl's going into 2 Dexter Avenue the Winter Building without tearing it down just moving in there. I feel that spot is perfect i definately don't want it torn down just something in it to help jumpstart lower dexter and tie it to lower commerce entertainment district.

I agree with you guys about grocery stores that could replace Bruno's, who should've been gone a long time ago. What a joke for a store...

tsully76, while that would be nice, I seriously doubt you'd see Kolh's locate at 2 Dexter Ave.

now, One Court Square...?

Check out some construction pics of the new observation tower and pedestrian bridge along the riverwalk.

These cranes are for the new RSA Judicial Building.

More to come.

More pics of the observation tower.

It will connect to the Intermodal Deck (left) via pedestrian bridge.

Bonus pics:

The city changed the street parking from parallel to angled around the Alleyway to allow for more parking on the street and slow down traffic to make it more pedestrian friendly...a suggestion from Dover Kohl & Partners downtown master plan.

This is my ideal spot for a doughnut (krispy kreme) and coffee shop.

This building was touted to possibly become a country "beer bar" by Jerry Kyser, who I believe is the owner. The back of the building opens up to the Alleyway.

I was reading an article in The Miami Herald and L.A Times about how the lifting on the band on the Cuban Embargo will not only benifit Mobile, but Hyundai in Montgomery as well.

Yeah, we could load Hyundai cars on barges downtown and sail them down the river through the Port of Mobile and on to Havana...all without the cars leaving the water.

Legislators no closer to getting a new home

By Phillip Rawls
The Associated Press

The Alabama Legislature isn't getting a new State House to replace its flood-damaged building -- at least for now.

The Legislature's 2009 session wrapped up Friday afternoon with the Senate failing to vote on a bill that would have permitted construction of a new State House connecting to the Capitol in downtown Montgomery.

Opponents said the eight-story building now housing the lawmakers does have problems, but legislators shouldn't be talking about a new State House during a recession.

"The people of Alabama are struggling to stay in their houses," Sen. Ben Brooks, R-Mobile, said.

Democratic Lt. Gov. Jim Folsom Jr., who presides over the Senate, agreed. "In a few years when the economy has improved, it might be time," he said.

The chairman of the Legislative Building Authority, Rep. Richard Laird, R-Roanoke, has been pushing for a new State House for several years. He said he hears the same reasons every year -- no matter what the state of the economy.

"There is never a right time for some people," he said Friday as he watched the Senate wrap up its session without considering his bill for a new State House.

Laird said he wanted to get his bill passed just to start planning, and no construction would have begun until the economy improved.

The House voted 47-36 last month for Laird's bill. It would have expanded the powers of the Legislative Building Authority, including letting it sign an agreement with the state pension fund to build a State House or sell bonds for the project. The structure would be located behind the Capitol and attached to it.

Laird said he thought the bill would sail through the Senate after heavy rains May 7 flooded the State House's bottom floor and parking deck, causing more than $1 million in damage to a building that already had problems with leaks and mold.

The State House was originally constructed in 1963 to house the state Highway Department. The Legislature moved from the Capitol to the building in 1986 for more space, but the number of lobbyists and citizens visiting the Legislature has grown.

The building's committee rooms are often overflowing and its hallways crowded. Its design makes it hard for people who use wheelchairs.

House Minority Leader Mike Hubbard, R-Auburn, has been one of the biggest proponents of a new building. He said recently, "That building has outlived its usefulness and needs to be razed."

Hubbard is a member of the Legislative Building Authority, which has been looking at a 220,000-square-foot structure and a parking deck costing about $170 million.

Folsom said Laird's bill ran into trouble because of concerns that it would give the six members of the Legislative Building Authority control of parking and streets around the State House.

Parking spaces are coveted in the crowded Capitol complex.

Folsom, who is seeking re-election next year, said he has no concerns about remaining in his seventh floor State House office overlooking the Capitol.

"This building is quite functional for the time being and will do fine for a few more years until the economy improves," he said.

When I first heard of this stipulation in the bill to give them control of the streets around the Capitol, I knew it would get a lot of opposition. And rightfully so. There's no way that kook Rep. Laird should have control if any street around the Capitol. He wants to close Union Street so badly he can taste it. This all gives the mayor and the county another year to get the Court Square proposal fine-tuned and back on the table.

Man, I hope you are correct. It scares me that serious consideration would be given to closing Union Street, but the rendering I saw looked really nice. A nice wing off the back of the capitol... but still I would prefer court square. I am just really concerned the our local delegation (mayor, county, etc.) are not fighting for this as hard as they should be, plus Laird seems TOTALLY opposed to even listening to a pitch involving court square!

^ Unfortunately, my family and I will be out of town this weekend.

Speaking of downtown, how many times will they announce this before it opens?

The HOPS Are FREE! The HOPS Are FREE!

Alabama Governor Approves Stronger Beer
Associated Press • May 22, 2009

Alabama has a new law allowing stronger beer to be sold in the state.

A spokesman for Gov. Bob Riley says he signed legislation Friday that immediately raises the alcohol limit on beer from 6 percent to 13.9 percent by volume. The Legislature approved the higher limit last week.

Alabama had the nation's lowest alcohol limit on beer, and the new law allows specialty and imported beers to be purchased in the state.

Riley's signature on the beer bill came one week after he signed legislation allowing the sale of stronger table wine in Alabama.

The beer bill was pushed by a grassroots group called Free the Hops. Its president, Stuart Carter of Birmingham, says he's shellshocked that four years of work to raise the limit has finally paid off.

And this, along with being the last state to repeal the prohibition of interracial marriage in 2000, has at last propelled Alabama into the 20th century!

Mazel Tov my confederate peeps, this is some welcome (and rare) good news from the region!! Now you may be able to enjoy some of our fine Northwest brews, such as Dead Guy, The Abyss, or Raven Mad Porter!

Let's lay the groundwork now for Alabama's entry into the 21st century by 2047!

Moving Government

Rumor has it that Mayor Strange would like to move city government to One Court Square and move the main city library to city hall. The move would involve renovation of the old city auditorium. Also, One Court Square would be remodeled to reflect the Dover plan. From a pretty good source!

Excellent idea. Kills several birds with one, albeit expensive, stone. I support this.

Interesting. Montgomery badly needs new facilities to house its city government agencies. For instance, a new:

* City Hall (Maybe the city council can meet in the county commission's meeting room. The City Council's room at city hall is woefully too cramped and embarrassingly outdated.)

* Police Dept./city jail

* Municipal Court

* City/County Library (Need I say much about the problems at this building?)

The city and county have been talking about the absolute need for a new main library downtown for a while. It should be one that reflects the modern high technology of today's lifestyle and would show its relevance in everyday life by being user-friendly to those within the business, education, and family circles.

The library should be a modern facility built along the riverfront area where it can entice more people to visit, since it will be close to the visitors center at Union Station.

The city, with Troy University, should move the Planetarium to the riverfront in connection with the library, which would create another option to bring more families/students to visit those facilities.

Think about it. That, along with the Air Flight Museum and the possible Auburn-related aquarium/education center, could create an educational synergy along the riverfront that would become a popular tourist attraction. That's family-friendly entertainment that will bring more pedestrians to the riverwalk and fuel more commercial business to serve those visitors.

The Municipal Court will be the first thing built, if it happens. The plan is to move the Court and the Police Station into new separate buildings, & renovate the existing property into a top notch jail worthy of our criminals.
