You've got to be kidding? They're "cool" in the same way the Oscar Meyer Weiner Mobile is "cool". Nick nacks are for grandmothers... not well-designed international airports. It's an embarrassment when the first thing visitors see of your hometown is the set from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.

Eh, I have to agree with Takeo... There's a time and place for kitsch, but I don't think the airport is it. It's also not in keeping with the newer look they're trying to achieve with the airport.

Airport Parkade Pedway Now Open

Halifax, N.S. – Travellers using the new airport parkade now have a covered and convenient connection to the main lobby of the terminal building. The over-road pedway opened today.

“The new pedway provides a direct indoor route to and from our parkade,” says Tom Ruth, HIAA President & CEO. “Many travellers have experienced the benefits of our parkade, and now it is even easier to access,” he adds.

The pedway extends from the P2 level of the 2,300-space parkade to the second level of the terminal building. From there, travellers can use the new elevators and escalators down to the main lobby.

The parkade offers a covered facility that is conveniently located, close to the terminal building. Travellers selecting the parkade have a variety of payment methods to choose from, including credit card express, cash or debit card, or pay-on-foot at ticket stations located at the Parkade entrances. A new payment option – “MACPASS plus” – will be available soon. For added customer convenience, the exit pay plaza will be staffed 24/7.

Air cargo storage project soon underway
Multi-tenant facility expected to boost business for region

Work will begin next week on a multi-tenant cargo facility at Halifax Stanfield International Airport.

The building, which will be accessible by aircraft via a taxiway from the runway, will be located near the new IMP hangar and visible from Highway 102.

The bonus feature of the 40,000-square-foot structure will be an 8,000-square-foot area for temperature-controlled cargo.

It will be the largest temperature-controlled storage space at an airport in Atlantic Canada, Doug McRae, an investor in Gateway Facilities ULC, said Wednesday. Gateway is a private company involved in the project.

"What we are doing here is fairly unique and will separate us from other airports."

Mr. McRae said it will also put him in "a position to have a legitimate conversation with exporters" about having more cargo move through Halifax.

The longevity and quality of perishable products will be increased with the new building. Perishables will be prepared for travel within the cold-storage area and kept as long as possible before flight time.

Tom Ruth, the president and chief executive officer of the Halifax International Airport Authority, said the $15-million facility is "definitely part of our strategy."

"This allows us to continue to grow our air cargo infrastructure and capacity."

The Halifax airport handled about 28,000 tonnes of cargo in 2008, about half of all of Atlantic Canada’s air cargo.

"But all of Atlantic Canada is missing a great deal of the export market as so much of this cargo is trucked to the U.S. Having this capability, growing with a multi-tenant cargo facility, and (to) have a tenant like FedEx will be a big boost to our region," he said.

Discussions are underway with other potential tenants to locate in the facility, expected to be ready in December. B.D. Stevens Ltd., which specializes in tilt-up construction, is the main contractor.

The Halifax airport has three dedicated cargo flights a week to Belgium, with one continuing on to Asia.

"We can sense some momentum building for products," Mr. Ruth said. "So it is not just about increasing Halifax’s market share of air cargo, but more importantly increasing the region’s market share of being able to have this cargo leave from Atlantic Canada, as opposed to being trucked to the U.S. and other places in Canada."

The authority does not intend to seek federal funding through the Atlantic Gateway initiative for the cargo facility, but it will seek funding for a project that would dovetail with the building.

The authority wants to increase the length of its main runway from 2,640 metres to 3,000 metres, which would allow cargo aircraft to carry heavier loads. Funding would also be sought to build a de-icing facility to support the air cargo program.

Has anyone been in the new covered pedway? Have the moving walkways/flat escalators been installed yet? I remember them being pictured in the artistic renderings.

I'm kind of dissapointed they got rid of the camera on the front of the terminal building. I liked that view... I had it set as my browser's home page since the day I found the cam

watched that little parkade grow up since it was only a foundation *tear*..

Maybe they'll put it back if/when they ever get around to building the hotel. O.o

It's such a short distance, I really don't know why they need to put moving walkways in.

Because all the 'big' airports do it, I'm guessing. That said, it may be appreciated when you have a ton of luggage to shift.

I always amuse myself by playing on the moving walkways when I'm stuck at Pearson. ...Yes, I'm easily amused.

Thanks for the update.

If anyone gets a chance to take some pictures of the terminal facade that would be great. The wikipedia page for the airport needs an updated picture.

I was thinking the same thing, however I do think we should wait till it's done and looks... "together" before taking/posting one. As soon as it's good, I'll get right on it.

Seems kind of odd that the cam that was used for the parking structure is now planted somewhere in the airfield(Can't tell if that's the taxiway or the runway bisecting the pic)...but showing the airside view of the old IMP hangar! Granted, the video isn't streaming, but the latest pic is from the morning of the 23rd. The link is no longer on HIAA's site, but the url is here:

It appears to be located on the air side of the terminal building, pointed directly at the intersection of the two runways. Appears to be the intersections of taxiways G, F and E in the middle, the de-icing pads and apron in the foregroup.
