It doesn't matter, i am sure most people know that the buildings are "there" but our city does have fog and poor visibility days. Just like 99% of the time boats know where a small island is, but for that 1% of the time it sure is good to have light houses and navigational lights in the water.

You kind of missed the point, i was simply showing that in Vancouver our towers are now tall enough that they are starting to enter air space. The Shangri-La is Vancouver's tallest tower yet it is also our most dim lit tower at the top. Why do we have beacon lights on top of the Golden Ears, Pitt River, Alex Fraser, and skytrain bridges yet not on top of this tower? Especially since coal harbour is essentially an active airport.

Well, the city would have had to have given them special permission to do that.

I don't think they would have done that on a cloudy, foggy, rainy day.

Air traffic doesn't usually (ever) fly 500 - 600 feet above the downtown core. By the time you notice the beacon it would be too late

It will be a different story once we finally get our 1000+ foot supertalls! *dare to dream*

^^^ yes a helicopter would need permission to fly that close to a building

hence why i asked if it was for filming - I don't think they would let anyone just fly by

It was for Tron

I'm surprised that movie is high enough budget to afford a helicopter.

$200 million?!?!?!

I didn't know they expected more than 200 people to watch it. Sheesh!

Good for the Vancouver economy, I guess.

Obligatory picture...

Apparently it's actually 300 MILLION

I guess the producers don't want a return on investment.

I decided to spend the night at Shangri-la. Wow! Everything is so nice, definitely on par with the top hotels in Asia.

Everything in the room is electronic, lights, blinds, curtains, and it has a SONY TV! Not a daiwoo, not a sharp, not a no name brand.... SONY

That is my briefcase

They seem to be pretty desperate, free valet parking, and $100 credit towards food and beverage whether at the restaurant or mini-bar.

Looking forward to breakfast tomorrow.

The pool / gym area is quite nice. I would have taken a picture, but there was scantily clad women in bikinis in the pool, and they could... well... you know, somehow take my intentions the wrong way. "Honest, I was only gonna post these on SSP!" A HUGE!! busload of Chinese tourists was checking in when I came back from dinner. I knew Shangri-la would bring them, they like their own things best

Occupancy has been fairly low so far hence the perks. Apparently the restaurant/lounge/bar (upstairs) has done phenomenally well.

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but GE (NBC et al.) has most of the hotel booked for the olympics, so that is where Bob Costas and the gang will be hanging out.
