Arrow Tempe + Jellyfish

Took some pics tonight. I'm getting better.

There are two buildings in this picture

Auto white balance, I don't like.

Manual white balance, I like.

Motherfucker started giving me shit.
MF'er: "are you taking light rail pictures?"

pause for a second... look at camera on a tripod pointed at tracks.

ME: "uh, yeah"

MF'er: "are they for personal or commercial use?"

ME: "depends on whether someone wants to buy one."

MF'er: "they have been trying to crack down on people taking pictures of the train"

ME: "that sucks for people who let them. I'm not breaking any laws, and I'm not going to stop."

MF'er: "well, I was just telling you. I wasn't trying to be mean, but you can't be doing that."

?????????

ME: "I just told you I'm not going to stop. I'm on public property and I'm not breaking any laws. If I were doing something illegal, or had ill intentions, do you think I'd be 10 feet from a police substation?"

MF'er: "I'll call my supervisor"

Never heard back from the motherfucker or his supervisor. Supervisor probably told him to shut up.

I love this thing like Steve Carrell loves lamp....

Nice job, its too bad the jellyfish and the LRT bridge arent close together, they are very complimentary color wise and what not.

You're gettin pretty good john. Check your aperture when you are shooting in dark spaces with brightly lit objects. If you turn it down a bit and lengthen your exposure time, you might see more "pop" in the colors. Of course, that all depends on the lens and CCD.

by turn it down do you mean open the aperture more? f4 is as low as my lens will go and I had it there with 2 second exposure on that jellyfish pic. Any more exposure and it just looked too light.

I'm a bit overwhelmed but it was only my second try at night shots so I think I'm making quick progress. not like they are awesome pictures, but at least you can see what the hell I'm shooting this time.

That's not a jelly fish...
That's actually a top-secrete worm hole for interstellar space travel, disguised by the feds as a decorative jelly fish!

Try shooting at f11 (a great aperature for crispy night building photos) and adjust your shutter speed accordingly. I think you'll be suprised at the results. Not that there's anything wrong with these photos. Night shots are difficult.

That jellyfish/wormhole looks pretty awesome with the lights on. Any idea what is going to happen when it starts collecting trash bags and birds nests? It's pretty high up to be cleaning it all the time. I think it might end up looking like a dirty pool net.

It wont collect birds next unless they're condors. The netting holes are too wide for birds to really settle in them. Its not very windy, or trashy, in Phx, I doubt we'll see much of a bag problem.

it looks that way in your photo, and it seemed that way at the greek festival sat. nite. or is it just the angle of viewing?

^I know you directed it to John, but I live in Tempe and see the bridge pretty often, no none of the lights are out. They just sort of change and light up, then fade out, come back, etc. So when he was taking that shot some were off, nothing to worry about

the section of lights he is referring to, off in the picture, were out the entire 1.5 hours I was at tempe town lake. Maybe they fixed them quickly, but they were definitely "out."

i think that section was still burned out, or at least not functioning properly, 2 days later on sat. night 5/2.
perhaps it was sabotage by the MF'er and his supervisor.

Light Rail Bridge

John is right, there was a section of LED lights that were out on the light rail bridge for a few weeks. My partner and I were walking our dogs down at Town Lake this past Friday night, and saw that they are all working now though. It really is a cool thing to see! The Tempe Center for the Arts waterfall feature is also working well now. There were several failed attempts to get the water to fall without splashing all over the sidewalk, and they seemed to have figured it out finally.
The path that goes from the TCA to Priest Dr is really nice too.
