Probably hundreds of millions of dollars. However, the aging water and sewer system would be even far more costly.

I went this weekend and really enjoyed it. The Botanical Garden is a real asset to Atlanta. Every time I visit I think I should visit more often, especially since I'm a member but somehow, it seems I never have the time.

They did a nice job with the new parking and visitors center.

High Museum

My wife and I visited the High Museum yesterday after enjoying brunch at South City Kitchen. We walked from there to the High and then on the way back to the car had a beer at TAP.

Very enjoyable. Easily walkable. Peachtree looks great with the renovations and 12th & Midtown is making a statement. At the museum, I really enjoyed the Anthony Ames exhibit.

The only bummer for the day was the fact that we couldn't drink alcohol until 12:30 (no bloody mary for me) and the hideous vacant lot across Peachtree where One Museum Place was supposed to go. It really is an eyesore when walking down the ramp in the front of the museum.

Other than that though, it really was nice to be able to walk from brunch to the museum and back again on a nice day in Atlanta.

You mean the one that they are re-doing now and will be finished in 2015?

Agreed Everything you just said is exactly why Midtown is my favorite spot in the whole city.

Peachtree Center Sun Trust Lease

This isn't exactly "new construction news," but it's a big deal. This from GlobeSt.com:

SunTrust Signs Huge Lease at Peachtree Center
By Carl Cronan
ATLANTA-Locally based SunTrust Banks Inc. has signed on to lease 252,822 square feet in the Marquis II office building at Peachtree Center, a mixed-use development owned by Miami-based America’s Capital Partners. The new space will house the bank’s Enterprise Information Services division, now located in a nearby building.
SunTrust’s current lease at 250 Piedmont Ave. expires at the end of next year, while the new lease commences in January 2011. The transaction brings the 451,000-square-foot Marquis II tower to more than 96% leased.

“After considering various locations, the Marquis II building offered the best fit for our changing business needs while allowing us to maintain a close proximity to our corporate headquarters at SunTrust Plaza,” says Doug Sinclair, SunTrust’s senior vice president of corporate real estate. Brokers involved in the deal noted that SunTrust were committed to keeping its information services center within Downtown Atlanta.

Bill Hollett and Mike Werner of ACP represented the building, along with Chris Port and Jeff Keppen of CB Richard Ellis. SunTrust was represented by Frank Mann and Tony Zivalich of Cushman & Wakefield.

Peachtree Center encompasses six office towers and retail space totaling more than 2.4 million square feet. The SunTrust lease is the largest signed there since the Nuclear Regulatory Commission took 100,000 square feet in the Marquis I building in December 2008.

ACP owns more than four million square feet of commercial space in the Atlanta market, including Ten 10th Street, Two Ravinia, the Cornerstone Building and Breckinridge Center. The private real estate company would not disclose terms of the SunTrust lease.

Not really the best news. A year or so back, Suntrust floated the idea of consolidating office space in Atlanta. I think most of us were hoping they would be the anchor tenant for the big building at Allen Plaza.

At least they didn't move out to Midtown or Buckhead (or Perimeter).

The article has a very interesting last line: "The airlines also want a sixth runway on the current footprint of the airport between runways four and five." That's the first I've heard of a sixth runway. Anybody know anything else about this?

Marquis I and II are the two thinner towers of Peachtree Center that sort of flank the Marriott Marquis, with Marquis II being the closest to SunTrust's building, I believe.

That is great news about the airport terminal, especially eliminating the bag rechecking! Does anybody have renderings of the final design?

The 6th runway has been discussed for many years along with south terminal complex but wont be built probably till the later part of next decade.

I thought the South terminal complex was intended to be built between the 4th and 5th runways, is there enough room to put a 6th runway and a terminal complex between the 4th and 5th runways?

I wonder if they're factoring in the impact of high speed rail on air travel? Or maybe they're just figuring it's unlikely that Georgia will be part of a HSR network in the foreseeable future.

It would take a significant chunk of room between the two runways, but there would still be room for a terminal complex. My guess is that the long range plan is to have AirTran and regional jets use the south terminal complex, and keep 737s and larger airplanes at the main terminal complex.

A sixth runway on the existing footprint of the airport is possible between runways 9R/27L and 10/28. They'd just have to build another bridge and taxiway across I-285. But I believe that building it between the two, assuming it's built just adjacent to the north of 10/28, means that the existing 10/28 would be a landing-only runway and the new runway would be strictly for takeoffs. This is because there wouldn't be enough room between the new runway and existing 9R/27L for both runways to have the same type of operation at the same time.

This way, they can keep trimultaneous landing and takeoff operations in almost all weather conditions. It would increase overall operational capacity by 15% at most, but it does make sense assuming that such a runway is utilized primarily by regional jets. That's the main reason the fifth runway was built in the first place.
