I don't disagree that its easier to fire him than figure out the actual problems with the team. I think however, if anyone is going to be fired it should be Sutter, he's the one who built this team.

I'd hate to have to watch Sutter suffer the indignity of being fired after he turned the team around, however why should we as fans have to wait another 7 years before we prove to be more than a one-off Cinderella fluke? I think someone else needs to come in and push the team to the next level from the GM's office, starting with a major retooling of the roster, and an ENTIRELY different coaching strategy.

I do agree that Sutter built this team and turned it around, however a major roster retooling? I don't think so. The chemistry was there to go deep in the playoffs, and potentially win the Stanley Cup. There were only a few things missing, like a solid back-up netminder, that prevented us from doing so. If I were in Sutter's shoes at the moment, I would concentrate on picking up a free agent back up like Curtis Sanford or Andrew Raycroft. Someone cheap, but effective. At risk of losing some depth players, I'd also at least re-sign Cammalleri and Bertuzzi, possibly even Aucoin. I'd potentially even shop around Phaneuf to free up cap space to build a stronger defensive core.

That said, I think Sutter and Keenan are safe. If we're having this discussion this time next year, both will need to be fired.

Has Keenan yet had a better record with this team than Playfair?

With clearly better players overall?

Who already got fired/demoted for outperforming good old Iron Mike?

The team, on paper, has gotten better every season since 04. Yet we really haven't seen any results. Sutter can juggle players all he wants but the fact is without either new management or better coaching (or both), this team is stuck in a rut.

We had a ton of new faces this year. Same result as last year. The problem is not with the players, unless you want to point a finger at Kipper or Iggy.

The team is looking a little old and a little slow. I'm not suggesting we trade everyone for picks, but let's not pretend this is the same team as 5 years ago. We have too much salary invested in too few guys, some of whom have slowed down quite a bit recently. Langkow is a good example. Iginla is even unable to dominate like he used too. We're not getting rid of him, obviously but he needs to be playing with some more mobile guys.

On a positive note, Mikael Blacklund has been dominant in the WHL playoffs. I'm hoping to see him play against Calgary this week.

This is single-handedly the most awesome thing I have ever read.

And I read a lot.

Someone with more courage than me, go post this in the Vancouver section.

Geez... that was a little biased eh? I'm not Flames, fan, nor am I a Canucks fan (actually Habs fan, so I've got my own problems). I didn't read all of it, not even close, probably happy I didn't waste my time doing so after getting through the 1 paragraph I did:

Quote:
2004 - High hopes for the Canucks who finished first in the Northwest Division were dashed when the Calgary Flames destroyed Vancouver in the first round of the playoffs. The Flames went on to defeat other division leading Red Wings and Sharks before getting screwed out of the Stanley Cup in game 6 of the finals against Tampa.
Seriously? Is going to game 7 OT in a series considered getting destroyed?

That's kinda *why* it's funny.

Yeesh. You guys seriously thought this was a well-researched historical analysis of the Canucks franchise?

Hyperbole. Satire. A coupla things to read up on.

I'm siding with the guys on QR... pretty good chance Sutter may go back to doing both at least for a while.

^^ I don't think so myself. After reading through Calgary puck a little, one of the names that interests me is Larry Robinson.

well, if we're just throwing names out here, how about MacT.

though, if Pat Quinn is available....

I see no reason Keenan should have been fired. The teams first round exit this year was based solely on late season injuries from key players, and a lack of consistent back-up goaltending. Very little, if any, of that had to do with Mike Keenan.

Lowry's not ready for the NHL just yet, and when he does come in, he needs a no pressure team like the Thrashers or Predators to cut his teeth on for a bit. Can't throw a good junior coach on a high caliber team like Calgary his first season. Look at Playfair.

Realistically, if we take a look at the coaching pool at the moment, MacTavish IS a good coach. Albeit, not the greatest, but a good coach. Tom Renney would be an alright fit in Calgary for half a season. Pat Quinn, IF available, would be the best choice here. Marc Crawford could coach the team, but I doubt he'd do that great of a job. Larry Robbinson? He does like the city, and does spend time in the area here in the off season. I don't know whats going on with the other Sutter over in New Jersey, but if he's free, he's a shoe in.

Did you watch a game this year? He rode the grinders and babied the stars. Every time Todd Bertuzzi did something retarded he was rewarded with the next shift. Look at what Conroy said just yesterday.

http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/Calgary/2009/05/21/9523076-sun.html

Quote:
So, was he too nice?

"At times," said Conroy bluntly.
...
"We try to talk and be positive, but I think Mike's got to come with the hammer -- and the hammer is ice time. If he doesn't like the way you're playing I think he needs to sit guys -- if you deserve to play, you play. At times he did it in the year but, at the end, when you're playing with 15 guys, you can't sit guys as you don't have enough bodies."
There's something seriously wrong when players are the ones lighting fires under the coaches ass. Plus, we had no powerplay whatsoever. a powerplay would have gotten us out of the first round.

I'm very happy with the change. As for new coach - no idea.
