Interestingly, the NCC's plan to turn Rideau-Sussex into a public park will remove the off-ramp that connects Rideau to Colonel By. I wonder if this (along with the OCC) is part of an overall plan to slow traffic in the area.

IMO, it's a smart move if they ever plan to turn Union Station into an LRT transit hub. The current area is a mish-mash of roads and intersections and is very pedestrian unfriendly.

Wouldn't it be cool if there was LRT, VIA, Cafés, Bistros, the market, the Canal and a Convention Centre all in the same corner of Ottawa?

That would be awesome.

I really think linking this building to the LRT tunnel will be amazing for the area. Could be a major catalyst for tones of development.

The whole thing's coming down, but it's attached to the Rideau Centre and the loading docks are on the opposite side of the mall on Nicholas Street, those are staying.

They are stripping the outer brick/block off the wall on Mackenzie King, right up to the mall now too. It's impressive to see how fast the demolition is going now, now that they are breaking and removing the main structure. It's going to be interesting to see the progress on the way in to work this year.

I have a question about the new Congress Centre, and sorry if this has already been answered. As much as I would love to see the new Congress Centre linked to the future LRT tunnel, is it in the plans? If it is, then are the Congress Centre ¸architectural plans finalized? Because if they still have not decided on the tunnel trajectory, then how can they start construction of the Congress Centre and its link to the tunnel if they don't know where the tunnel will be?

Or is the commencement date of the Congress Centre construction still distant enough to allow the city to decide where the tunnel will go and for the architects responsible for the new Congress Centre to adjust the plans accordingly?

Maybe they could extend it over the canal, or go vertical...you raise a good point...

Maybe they would get yet another one built elsewhere, and use this building for something altogether different in the future (like a museum or gallery)...

On the weekend it was all extended but laying on its side. It looked like the wind blew if over or something. You don't realize how big cranes are when upright, this thing is a real beast!

I think going vertical makes most sense. They should combine that with a Rideau Centre expansion (leave the space in place over part of the Rideau Centre) and have enough room to expand to as much as 1,000,000 square feet. It is easier to expand once you get up to a 5th level and much, much more space is available, since unless a large entertainment wing is added, the Rideau Centre won't need to go that high.
