Vancouver Convention Centre Welcomes the World to Its Expanded Facility

DDB Canada develops new visual identity and integrated marketing program to champion Vancouver and its new facility as the ultimate "inspiration centre" VANCOUVER, April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- This past weekend, the Vancouver Convention Centre officially opened the doors to its expanded premises, welcoming over 63,000 meeting planners, local dignitaries and residents of Greater Vancouver to explore its new, innovative amenities; the new structure has tripled the convention centre's capacity and set industry standards in environmental sustainability. As well as unveiling a new visual identity, the convention centre is rolling out an integrated marketing program to promote the space and the entire unique experience Vancouver has to offer.

"We recognize that when people come to conventions, more than anything, they come to get inspired. When we had the opportunity to design a new convention centre from the ground up, we chose to do things differently," says Claire Smith, vice president, sales and marketing, Vancouver Convention Centre. "Status quo is not enough. We take great pride in finding ways to differentiate ourselves across all touch points, including our marketing, to help us stand apart from the 'conventional' convention centre experience."

DDB Canada and its integrated groups Karacters Design Group, Tribal DDB, Radar DDB and Rapp Collins were tasked with creating a complete new brand and the seamless delivery of a new creative platform to coincide with the launch of the new facility.

"This is one of the larger, fully integrated branding initiatives the agency has undertaken. It nicely demonstrates our collective creative expertise and the scale of work that clients can trust us to deliver on," says James Bateman, creative director, Karacters Design Group. "The new brand seamlessly permeates all consumer touch points, from the new logo, print materials and website to strategic DM work, print and online ads, social media and more."

The Vancouver Convention Centre was built using some of the clearest glass in the world, designed to let the outside in and the inside out. Looking directly out on Vancouver's waterfront, delegates are inspired by an uninterrupted view of water and mountains. Instead of the usual literal architectural or place-themed logo, Karacters Design Group developed an identity system that evokes the unique feeling one experiences at the centre. With layered images of water, light and glass, the identity reflects both the spacious, modern feel of the building and its spectacular surroundings. The photography-based logo prominently features the word VANCOUVER to emphasize that the brand is much more than just a facility, but is reflective of the entire Vancouver experience.

DDB Canada develops new visual identity and integrated marketing program to champion Vancouver and its new facility as the ultimate "inspiration centre" VANCOUVER, April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- To introduce the new Vancouver Convention Centre to meeting planners, a print campaign shows images of dreary, partitioned meetings rooms, accompanied by cheeky copy that communicates, "Conventions should inspire," and a call to action to visit the website. For example, to underline the key message the text in one execution featuring a drab, lifeless convention space ironically reads: "Hell isn't all fire and brimstone; sometimes it's carpeted."

In keeping with the new brand, the website has been redesigned and its content reorganized, with new materials and interactive tools to be released later this year by Tribal DDB, Vancouver.

To help raise awareness of its unique services and space and what Vancouver has to offer, Vancouver Convention Centre is also utilizing a targeted social media program. Radar DDB is engaging relevant online communities with videos and photos of Vancouver and the expanded facility, as well as aspects of the expansion's design, Vancouver Convention Centre's strong commitment to sustainability, its rooftop garden and more. The photos and videos will start appearing online mid-April.

An international direct mail campaign targeting meeting planners to make Vancouver Convention Centre their number one choice for their next meeting is being developed by Rapp Collins and will launch later this summer.

About the Vancouver Convention Centre

Since 1987, the Vancouver Convention Centre has been British Columbia's flagship convention facility, hosting more than 350 events annually and generating more than $213 million (fiscal 2008), in economic impact for the province. Vancouver Convention Centre is nearly 500,000 square feet, and will serve as the accredited media centre for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. In 2008 the centre won the AIPC Apex Award for "World's Best Convention Centre," following up on its previous win for this honour in 2002. The Vancouver Convention Centre is the only convention centre worldwide to receive this award twice.

Vancouver's $900M convention centre springs a leak

CBC News
Vancouver's new convention centre opened on April 3 at a cost of nearly $900 million. (CBC)
A water leak at Vancouver's new convention centre has reportedly flooded two floors and forced 1,000 delegates of a Public Service Alliance convention out onto the street.

One worker said the situation is bad and the damaged flooring may have to be replaced. In the meantime, convention delegates have been told to return to their hotels and come back at 2 p.m. PT for an update.

Officials with the convention centre have yet to comment on the leak.

The Vancouver Convention Centre was opened earlier this month at a cost of nearly $900 million, and is slated to be the main international press centre and broadcast facility during the upcoming 2010 Winter Games in February.
interesting start

True. I'd rather have the leaks and what not now than during the Olympics. What an embarassment that would be if something like that happened. The entire world is watching us. yikes.

This is a terrible time for a closure....the Liberal convention is this week!

I'm guessing one of the pipes on the ceiling burst, afterall behind all that wood grating there are a ton of utilities. Bah, and I was hoping that the convention centre would have a problem-free image.

Towerguy is going to be all over this.

Once I heard the news of the first two floors being damaged, I did a face palm. Sadly, the first thing that came to my mind was the Fast Cat Ferries...

From CBC:

Organizer Jeannie Baldwin told CBC News a sprinkler pipe burst and water began spraying out of the ceiling.

"There's water just pouring out the ceilings, literally, just pouring out of the ceilings on the first floor, and it's going onto all of our electrical, so it's pretty dangerous in there," said Baldwin, a regional vice president with PSAC. "So, we thought the best thing to do was pull all of our delegates outside until a decision was made."

Early reports are that two floors of the building were damaged and several meeting rooms will now need repairs, but there is no word yet on how much repairs will cost or how long they'll take.

One worker said the damaged flooring may have to be replaced. In the meantime, convention delegates have been told to return to their hotels and come back at 2 p.m. PT for an update.

Given the amount of wood in the facility, it was bound to be protected heavily by fire fighting equipment....I hate to say this, but this could be a real problem. It's not even a month old, and the sprinklers already burst?

Broken pipe briefly shuts Vancouver's new convention centre

By Jeff Lee, Vancouver Sun
April 27, 2009 3:56 PM

VANCOUVER -- The new Vancouver Convention Centre was briefly shut Monday morning after a large water line in the $883-million building burst, flooding several rooms.

Workers discovered the broken six-inch pipe at about 7:30 a.m. and by the time the line was shut down water had flooded about 8,000 square feet of space, said Ken Cretney, the centre's general manager.

The accident forced the suspension of two sessions of a convention for the Public Service Alliance of Canada.

Cretney said damage was limited primarily to wet carpet, which will be dried out. He said the convention centre called in three professional restoration firms, which were on scene within an hour to mop up and dry out the affected areas.

"It's a new building, a large new building, so there is a larger degree of chances for something to go wrong," he said. "In this case the damage appears limited mostly to carpeting."

Cretney said the leak occurred on the second floor, raining large volumes of water down into the main ballroom on the first floor.

That ballroom will be one of the main studio areas for international broadcasters who will use the convention centre as a broadcast facility during the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Cretney said the company's insurance adjuster has already been by and he also expects the damage could be covered under warranties since the building only opened three weeks ago.

There was little outward sign of damage. Crews brought in large evaporation fans to dry out the carpets, and behind the scenes used large vacuums to suck up water in the back-of-house areas.

The building reopened to the public by noon, with sessions resuming in the afternoon.

The CBC article made it sound a lot worse.
