http://lrt.daxack.ca/LRTvsHRT/CostCompare.html
A pro LRT groups list of capital costs for LRT. Looking at it it would seem that building 200km of LRT would be between $4billion and $10 billion, or about 1/5th to 1/2 of the cost of skytrain. Unfortunately all these examples are mostly built along existing rights of way through suburbs, along highways and rail lines. This means that you would have to assume that the more accurate construction cost for Broadway would be the TTC example of about 43million per km, or about 1/2 of what skytrain costs. However keep in mind that the TTC's proposal for their cross town line(just like Broadway) involved some tunneling and came up to 74million per km.

So again obviously that guys costs are way of, there isnt a single example in NA that isnt atleast double, and thats ignoring where the lines are built. To build LRT lines in the city of Vancouver and through its built for would likely be a minimum of 40-50million per km, and thats being generous. And the limited capacity and travel speed would remain unless you seriously overbuild the system and that likely means your talking about over 100mill per km going through the Broadway corridor, and the system still wont be as efficient as skytrain, though it would be close.

By the way anyone can use the info i post or my posts for the cause, you all can add on to them, change, them, i dont give a shit so long as people dont twist the main point of them, im not a believer in intellectual property rights. So long as someone isnt making a profit of my posts than I could care less, in the case someone does make a profit, or gets recognition, I would like to atleast know what I did wrong to miss the opportunity.

Exactly. Look at Calgary. We're building an 8.4 km western expansion of our LRT system for a cost of somewhere around $800 million. That's ~ $100 million/km, with a good portion of the route grade separated. These numbers of $40 to $50 million per km of high frequency LRT in built up urban areas are pure fantasy.

The group's main purpose is to counter the LRT idiots...that's the only purpose here. Given we spend so much time on this board, it's only logical that maybe we should funnel our ideas into something that's productive and make a difference for once.

All of these points we have posted here should be posted on that pro-LRT (anti skytrain) page against that guys post. And they should be posted on our page as well (the pro-skytrain page).

I'll post it on the pro-skytrain blog only when every single "point" they've made has been thoroughly debunked.

Just a FYI Cornholio, 72 decibels at 25m isn't very loud. I'm sure the exhaust "scream" of our current diesel but feel is several times that. Just remember Db is a log scale.

Hmm, Mr.X are you the admin to that blog? Would it be possible to submit whole contributions?

I only support it if we get an ironclad pledge from Gordo and his cabal that there will be cut and cover. No bait and switch like last time.

Bombardier Advanced Rapid Transit
Along with the Expo Line extension, the Millennium Line will be extended from VCC-Clark to UBC via 10th Avenue. However, opposition from pro-LRT groups may result in a LRT or streetcar on Broadway from VCC to UBC instead.
No....found this on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombardier_Advanced_Rapid_Transit#Toronto

Facebook group in favour of SkyTrain to UBC gaining critical mass
by: Derek Moscato April 25, 2009 1:48 PM comments: (0)

A local grassroots effort to support the building of a SkyTrain extension along the Broadway Corridor to UBC is gaining significant traction -- underscoring major demand for light-metro public transport to West Point Grey.

In its own words, the organization of Metro Vancouver residents is "committed to providing the public with the information they need to make an informed decision regarding this critical issue."

"We believe that an underground SkyTrain extension of the Millennium Line to UBC will serve as an long-term solution to the corridor's needs, and that ground-level light rail is no more than a minor upgrade from the existing 99 B-Line rapid bus service. The Broadway corridor is of not just local importance but also of regional importance, being the second largest employment centre outside of Vancouver City Centre. It is in need of a mass transit service that is fast, reliable, and convenient."

The organization makes the case that neither rapid bus, nor slower, at-grade light rail options will suffice, given the huge demand for transportation along the busy arterial.

Impressively, the Facebook group -- which was quietly launched just over a week ago -- already lays claim to over 900 members, without the benefit of any formal marketing or publicity push.

Aspiring SkyTrain riders (or those fed up with lining up for the B-Line buses at Broadway Station) can join the Facebook group here.

SkyTrain better for the environment

It really would be a great loss for Surrey and Vancouver if TransLink, because of funding shortages, is forced to shelve planned SkyTrain extensions – and especially so if more carbon-exhaust-producing buses must be put on the road as a result of SkyTrain extension cancellations or delays.

SkyTrain is the best transportation option available, especially environmentally.

Commendable is the soon-to-come automated-rail Canada Line, connecting Richmond, the airport and Vancouver.

And ALRT, unlike non-automated Light Rail Transit, will not negatively affect the flow of already-congested traffic, for SkyTrain’s rail runs are all elevated and underground and do not force road-vehicular traffic to a halt along SkyTrain’s routes.

Here in the GVRD, research/polls reveal that what drivers – especially the single occupant vehicle drivers – expect most of public transit in order for them to leave their cars at home, was the stipulation that the public transit be convenient and fast – both of which are the SkyTrain concept’s prime aspects.

The person talks about Surrey's needs but he does bring up some interesting points that we can use.

I told you guys! All we had to do is get the ball rolling, look at what has already began!

If all the broadway LRT supporters came out of the wood work then why not the skytrain supporters? It is now happening!

Finally we may have an equal fight.
