Not as badly as transit improvements are needed. We need a balanced transportation system which would require massive investments in transit to make it competitive with driving. The reason why congestion is so bad on the bridge is that transit has been underfunded by around $100 million a year due to the defeat of the vehicle levy.

Unfortunately, transit improvements such as LRT in the valley are going to be delayed for years due to highway expansion.

Driving is plummeting in the US and it wouldn't surprise me if the same happens here.

Bottom line is that Gateway is looking more and more like a waste of money.
Do we have a single thread where racc has not shown his disproval of gateway?

Hypersonic sound. Not main stream yet but its getting there and still a ways away to be perfected but it seems like a up and coming technology that would work well in such scenarios...mind you im still trying to figure out how this exactly works...

That's called phased-array ultrasound when it's used for medical ultrasound. There are multiple speakers spaced apart, and the timing (the phase shift) of each individual speaker is controlled to create lines of constructive and destructive interference. The only difference with this is it's operating in the audible part of the spectrum.

^^ What BS. I guess I am very suspicious because I take photos with a huge — camera...I must be gathering the schematics with such a camera to blow up the place in the future. Not to mention schematics of most stations are easily obtainable. If anybody ever bothers me while taking photos, I tell them to call the police if they want to make a fool of themselves.
I will be lodging a protest against GVTAPS for such a blatantly discriminatory ad against professional/amateur photographers. I knew they hired idiots, but this puts them in a new low...

I don't see any issue with the ads, besides the fact I'd rather see them with ads earning revenue for Translink. No one is going to get locked up for taking pics of the station.

Advertising revenue aside, I actually do have a instinctive gut reaction to that ad. I lived in DC for nearly a decade, and after 9/11 there were all sorts of warnings to watch for unusual behaviour on the metro system. And even they didn't say, "watch for people taking photos." It was the nation's Capitol. People were constantly taking photos of everything. Vancouver is pretty similar in the summer.

So if no one is going to be arrested or questioned for taking pictures of the station, then why have the ad in the first place?

As for the ad itself, the person in it doesn't exactly have a large camera. Any traditional 35mm camera is about that size. Heck, what about all the folks running around the convention center a couple of weeks back with video recording devices, just taping everything. If that ad were taken seriously, there'd be about 500 independent investigations underway right now.

I just don't get the message. It's either serious and they intend to take the reports as such, or it's not very serious and they need to re-focus the ad on something that is.

There might be good intentions behind the message, but the delivery seems a bit odd.

is this not what tafryn does? although to be honest, when i first saw tafryn's blog i was curious as to all the seemingly inconsequential photos of electrical equipment and the like. the thought did cross my mind that there were some terrorist implications... way before any of these ads.

^ I've never experienced any surprised reactions or concern when I'm out with my camera.

In today's day and age, with the rise of internet culture and the ubiquity of digital cameras, I think that most people's threshold of what is out of the ordinary has shifted substantially. I doubt it even registers for most people when they see someone taking photos of a construction site, building, or SkyTrain.

I personally don't care what "looks" people give me. I've only had one nut job talk to me about taking pictures (apparently he though I was taking pictures of him, which is legal in public even if I was)...so I told him to call the police if he has any problems with it...he left me alone after I said that.
While Translink may be considered private property, there is nothing to indicate such a private "public" property has any guidelines for taking photographs...unlike the NYC Metro for example.
Here is a good page to get some details about what your rights are:

As far as private property goes, I think yes, the owner can tell you you can't film it if they choose. Public property.. I'm not so sure. I read that big detailed Translink regulations decal in the Buses before, and I remember a whole lot of prohibited activities, but I don't remember cameras being mentioned. After all, if it was flat out not allowed, I'm sure lots of us would hear about it pretty fast.

The ad says report suspicious activity. It says nothing about it being illegal. I'm sure that someone who walks around only taking pictures of cameras and locked doors counts as suspicious. I don't think that's illegal, and if you said you were taking photos for a page on skyscraperpage.com I'm sure they would let you go. I think it's more that it can be used as evidence if you if they arrested you for something, not that you would actually did get charged with taking pictures. It would just be evidence that you were .. 'casing the joint'.
