Obama Unveils High-Speed Rail Plan

Quote:
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Thursday highlighted his ambition for the development of high-speed passenger rail lines in at least 10 regions, expressing confidence in the future of train travel even as he acknowledged that the American rail network, compared to the rest of the world’s, remains a caboose.

With clogged highways and overburdened airports, economic growth was suffering, Mr. Obama said from the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, shortly before leaving for a weekend trip to Latin America.

“What we need, then, is a smart transportation system equal to the needs of the 21st century,” he said, “a system that reduces travel times and increases mobility, a system that reduces congestion and boosts productivity, a system that reduces destructive emissions and creates jobs.”

And he added, “There’s no reason why we can’t do this.”

Mr. Obama said the $8 billion included for high-speed rail projects in his stimulus package — to be spent over two years — and an additional $1 billion a year being budgeted over the next five years, would provide a “jump start” toward achieving that vision.
Quote:
The government has identified 10 corridors of 100 to 600 miles in length with greatest promise for high-speed development.

They are: a northern New England line; an Empire line running east to west in New York State; a Keystone corridor running laterally through Pennsylvania; a southeast network connecting the District of Columbia to Florida and the Gulf Coast; a Gulf Coast line extending from eastern Texas to western Alabama; a corridor in central and southern Florida; a Texas-to-Oklahoma line; a California corridor where voters have already approved a line that will allow travel from San Francisco to Los Angeles in two and a half hours; and a corridor in the Pacific Northwest.

It is exciting to see the mention of rail lines outside of the northeast, cali and south florida. But I imagine those might have the first priority as funding comes available. It was my understanding while watching that speech that this initial proposed funding does two things: 1) improves some existing railways and 2) goes towards the continued study and identification of possible routes. I think we are still a long way from seeing the kind of multi-billion $ funds or commitments to see routes like the proposed Gulf Coast one. But, we gotta start somewhere. Maybe these middle America routes will entice more people in more places to back the overall idea if they can see a hope of it reaching their own lives in 30 or so years.

Doubt that, the 1-10 corridor is one of the heaviest traveled interstates.... I am sure this will happen sooner than we think..

I was pumped to see high speed rail period in the US. That is one area we lag way behind in compared to our peer nations (most of which are way smaller and much easier to build this type of thing). I was even more excited that Mobile made one of the lines. My only dissapointment was that we are not very well connected in the map. Our line basically runs from here to Houston with deadends at either end. I would definitely use it to make quick trips to NO. Maybe it will stop on the Miss. Gulf COast for all those Casino folks. It would be nice if we were better connected to that line that runs through BHam and ATL on its way to the east coast. I think I would use that much more frequently than this NO-Houston Line. Oh well...beggers cant be choosers, bring on the rail. Anything to get commuter rail service back in Mobile and hopefully a nice new shiny terminal to go with it. I would hope for a downtown terminal from an urban standpoint, but it might make more sense from a logistics stadpoint if it stopped at the airport. Our airport needs all the help it can get. Maybe if people could ride rail here, increase the traffic volume, and then lower the prices the airport could do more business. Either way I hope this happens.

^ I wrote about this in an Atlanta thread. I'd basically take it as a hope for a good starting point like the interstate system started. Assuming we can keep from going totally broke beforehand, it would probably just be a matter of time before these things would interconnect and spur off in directions not currently considered. Just gotta start with some basics first when you consider how much money it will really take. I'm happy that anywhere on the gulf coast is actually being considered for one of the first few steps.

Yes you are right!!!! I am thankful, and hope for the best. The weekend trips from Baton Rouge to Mobile are long and tiresome. By the time I get back to my other home, I am tired and wore out. I use to make the trip in 3 hours or less, but that is not the case anymore, either going to Mobile or going to Baton Rouge. I-10 is really congested and something has got to give.......

Well, all you would need to do is to stop and change trains in New Orleans to go north. Although, I can see the need for a more direct route north from Mobile.

Also:

Another new container line has started out of the new terminal - Link

You cant just have a full rail system from the beginning. Its nice that Mobile is even included -- it will eventually expand people.

Its good Mobile is included as a designation corridor for high speed rail...optimistic about the future of the line.

In other news-[away from developments]-that hit close to home for me, after celebration of my own life on wednesday the 15th, 22 now, a close friend/classmate(LHS06) of mine killed himself and was buried yesterday. This morning I also learned Jamarcus Russell's uncle, former WBLX radio host Ray Ray died, a close friend of mine and I'm sure all his listeners. All local news stations did a story, here is NBC15.

Gone but not forgotten,
RIP Ray Ray.

Yeah man I was shocked to hear about "D" as well man I went to Dunbar and Leflore with him i`m a 2005 graduate. I know one thing there isn`t a church in Mobile that could hold the service for Ray Ray I assume it will be at the civic centre.

Weird...no Las Vegas or Phoenix connection depicted. But then again, the Cali-Florida line isn't here either...
