Some sort of 'Cultural Center' that won't get utilized is planned, but a hotel option is another prospect. It would be nice if Marriot stepped up and pushed for a new hotel to fill what was lost.

Frank Gehry is supposed to design the performing arts center that is to be built there, but construction won't happen for a while. For one thing, the fund raising hasn't begun for it. Also, the site is to be utilized for the construction of other aspects of the WTC rebuilding.

If you haven't seen this yet, it's worth it.

It takes some bandwidth, so it might be better to download it and watch it.

I think it's pretty dumb to forcibly make the building exactly 1,776 ft. I cannot understand the reasoning behind this. I mean, the foot is just a (somewhat arbitrary) unit of length. We could just as well define a new unit, elbow, so that the proposed roof height of the building would be exactly 1,776 elb.

Especially since (hopefully) some day all Americans will be using the meter. So, if they’re having trouble leasing the antenna, maybe they should just not build it for now. And when they do build it, they should build it as tall as is necessary for the transmissions, not more.

Well, actually it was a European that decided on the 1,776 foot height for pretty darn obvious reasons. What feet vs. meters really has to do with this is beyond me... but I for one don't give a squirt of horse piss if Americans EVER use meters.

The point he is making is that the foot is a totally arbitrary unit of measurement, as is every other measuring system, which renders the significance of the 1776 ft. height unimportant to him.

And the point I'M trying to make is that the foot happens to be the arbitrary measure in common use in the United States, which is where the tower happens to stand. So when European cutting-edge architect Daniel Libeskind decided that he wanted a symbolic height for his project, it made perfect sense for him to use feet as opposed to meters.

It's no more silly or "arbitrary" than defining a supertall as any structure over a 1,000 feet high... is it?

And Libeskind explained perfectly why he thought a symbolic height was more fitting than merely shooting for the "WTB Du Jour" title (though at the time the height was proposed, it WOULD have made the FT the world's tallest if it had been built that very same day): he said a symbolic height was one that would never become obsolete or be superseded. For example: let's say Libeskind had proposed a 2,000 footer... it STILL wouldn't be the WTB by the time it was built. So Libeskind was making the argument that simply aiming for WTB status was beneath a project of this importance.

The bottom line is, 1,776 feet has become the world's single most famous building statistic, EVER, and even in Europe and Asia everyone knows the FT is famously that high. How many today remember or care how high erstwhile tallest scrapers, like Taipei 101, are?

To HIM. The fact is, it's the system of measurement that Americans use, and the tower is meant as a symbol of America - I fail to see what's hard to understand about it. As CoolCzech already mentioned, it's an aspect of Daniel Libesking's site plan to mark 1,776 ft specifically. And the antenna itself has nothing to do with the spire, the spire was planned before the antenna. Obviously the design has been altered to accommodate it.

Then again, 1776 meters would have been something to see.
