Information Bulletin - Update
The Hamilton Conservation Authority is alerting watershed residents about the potential for heavy rainfall throughout the weekend and into Monday.

A combination of weather events has the potential to bring greater than 100 mm of rain to the Hamilton area from Saturday to Monday. A low pressure system is expected to hit southwestern Ontario on Saturday with up to 20 – 25 mm of rain forecast. Then on Sunday and into Monday, the remnants of Hurricane Ike is forecast to pass through southern Ontario bringing as much as 80 – 100 mm of rain over an 18 – 24 hour period.

The actual amount of rainfall received is closely related to the precise track taken by Hurricane Ike; a slight wobble in its track between now and Saturday at noon will have a dramatic impact on the storm’s path through Ontario.

Currently, HCA is not forecasting any major flooding in our watershed; however localized flooding is possible in urban and low lying areas. Additionally, water levels in area creeks will rise rapidly, posing a safety hazard.

Adults are advised to keep children and pets away from area watercourses.

The Hamilton Conservation Authority continues to monitor stream and weather conditions closely and will issue further messages if necessary.

ok, it's official. I can't take the Bad Dog anymore.
Love the menu changes, love the coffee, love the decor, love the patio, love the food...but the MUSIC!!!! Oh my!! It's a horrible way to start your day. 8:30 am, and I'm in here listening to some techno shite. Brutal.

Techno @ 8:30am!? *shudders*

I'm sure you can talk to the owners, rth. I can guarantee they'd be more than happy to change the music for customers. Especially if it means potentially losing one.

they just switched over to some old-school Police/Sting. Much better...still, I prefer some background folk or jazz first thing in the morning.

Art in Public Places - Locke Street

Locke Street Public Art Ideas Charrette

The City of Hamilton is currently seeking public input into developing potential themes and suggested locations for a potential public art work on Locke Street between Main Street and Stanley Avenue. In order to determine a theme or themes that are reflective of the surrounding community and the qualities of the Locke Street area the Culture Division is holding a two stage ideas charrette. The public are encouraged to attend the evening portion of the charrette.

Thursday January 8, 2009
St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church (corner of Locke and Herkimer Streets)
Parish Hall, Lower Level
7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

The results of this charrette will help staff to determine the themes that artists competing for the public art commission will be asked to address in their work. They will also be used in judging the appropriateness of the piece in relationship to the community.

If you are unable to attend you may still provide comments by downloading the following comment form, completing it and returning by fax or mail via the contact information on the form. You can also e-mail your comments directly to [email protected]. Please provide your comments by January 23, 2009.

Boutique fitness centre slated for Locke Street

Another new business is opening on Locke Street South. Stefan Witt is planning to open The Gym on Locke, at the corner of Locke and Chatham streets, in late January.

Witt is formerly a district vice-president for the Alliance Fitness Corporation, which owned the Family Fitness and Exclusively Women's centres, and has worked in the health and fitness industry for nearly 25 years.

A resident of the Locke Street area, he bought his building -- which also houses a variety store and candle shop -- last March with a view to opening a boutique-style fitness centre upstairs.

The centre will occupy 2,400 square feet of space and have state-of-the-art cardio equipment as well as strength resistance equipment and free weights. It will offer a limited membership of no more than 400, month-to-month memberships, and be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Members will have access to the facility through a carded entry system. Staff will be on site from Monday through Saturday, along with personal trainers to work with members onsite and in the neighbourhood.

In addition to offering gym workouts, the club will organize a running club and cycling club.

A new website is being developed at thegymonlocke.com.

"Our club will appeal mostly to neighbourhood clientele," Witt said.

"Already we have more than 100 people registered."

Plans are under way to create a specialty culinary centre at 211 Locke St. S. in the building that was constructed as a Unitarian Church in the early 1960s.

Two Hamilton entrepreneurs will be partners in the enterprise, to be called The Culinary Office. The business will offer cooking demonstrations and lessons, wine tastings, catering, restaurant dinners by reservation, and specialty food products and cooking tools.

Michael Stauffer has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Guelph, was trained as a chef at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, France, and worked in the Splendido and Rain restaurants in Toronto, and Langdon Hall in Cambridge.

His partner Steven Suggitt also has a commerce degree from Guelph, has worked in bars and restaurants in Whistler, British Columbia, and was most recently manager of The London Tap House in downtown Hamilton.

They are hoping to open their new facility this spring.

Fenian Films will continue to operate in the lower level of the building.

Not that the tips aren't welcome, but doesn't a column in a newspaper's business section seem like a sweetheart gig for a president of a PR/marketing agency?

They've been renovating that building at the corner of Melbourne and Locke. Before it had that crappy smeared cement facade. They've taken all the facade apart and replaced it with really nice bricks. Looks a lot better. Anyone know what the place will become? It was an antique store.

I went into that antique store as it was closing down. The windows all look a lot bigger, but that could be an optical illusion.

I am a bit concerned about the number of 'lease expiring' sale signs I have noticed along the Locke Street stretch of late.

A month or two ago the front was torn down and reconstructed, it was covered in stucco for years and I remember seeing the brick poking through the stucco in places all soggy and barely any grout between them. Looks like they used reclaimed brick, nice touch. Also those big windows weren't there on the Locke St side of the building before the reconstruction...used to be all stucco! Definite improvement. I'm thinking a bookstore would do really well in this location, plenty of traffic from the nearby starbuck's.. but probably will become a restaurant?
