Thanks Flar.

It is a nice building. Obviously from the Queen Victoria days from the style.
Let's hope it doesn't get run down in time.

Pharmacy planned for Derby Tavern site

March 23, 2009
The Hamilton Spectator
(Mar 23, 2009)
When demolition crews are finished tearing down the old Derby Tavern, plans for a Pharma Plus will go ahead.

The tavern on Queenston Road just east of the traffic circle has been a well-known watering hole and hotel in the east end for many years.

"We received a permit application at the end of January of this year to construct a 'shell' for a future pharmacy on this site," Debbie Spence, communications for planning and economic development, wrote in an e-mail. She had no details on timelines.

In the 1920s, it was called the Derby House, a wagon stop for traffic on a rough road that led to Niagara. Its second owners turned it into a larger complex in 1954, adding rooms including a large lobby and dining room.

The Derby was a live country music hot spot in its heydey. It closed last year.

They've started construction for new retail at Dundurn St. It's at the parking lot next to Zarky's.

They've found a name for that retail development at Centennial Parkway and QEW area..........Confederation Park Shopping Centres. 480,000 square foot of commercial development.

I should also include that all 300 employees of the existing Wal Mart at Eastgate square will be relocated to Confederation Park Shopping Centres. Concept plan includes a 100-150 room hotel, a three to four storey office building and of course retail.

At least Redcliff has two or three years to start planning for the relocation of Wal-Mart from Eastgate.

They've already known for years that Wal-Mart is leaving.

That's an interesting question. Whatever they go with, it has to be connected to Eastgate Square. I've heard of proposals to run selected Barton trips that way (obviously not via Eastgate), which wouldn't serve most employees of that centre very well.
A couple of ideas that could work:
1) Separate Bayfront back into routes 4 and 57. The Nash route would cover all points south of Woodward and Glow. The Bayfront would go north on Woodward, under the QEW, along Van Wagner's Beach and Centennial to Eastgate. This also helps move people to/from Confederation Park in two directions, rather than focusing all trips on Eastgate. That can overwhelm the King bus on weekends.
2) Re-introduce route 59 (Frances), but modified to travel to the new retail centre, then through the Frances area. Further, route it down Millen Rd to Hwy 8, and interline it with Route 58 to create a two-way loop. Late at night, a 58/59 loop could run in one direction, similar to 55/55A, so no extra bus would be required during this period.

Look at all the trouble HSR would have to go to - to accommodate Walmart's move...

If they just either a: stayed where they are b: choose a spot convenient for transit users and driver c: close up entirely

Seriously. Why would should we bend over backwards for Wal-mart?

I'm pretty sure the city is planning a transit terminal at the new retail area. Or maybe it's Fifty/QEW area.
