Seriously, there are no negatives. More input money to the city. No more losses of conventions that want to come to SLC but need the proximity and the rooms.



What are the negatives? Invasion of aliens from outside of the state? I mean the hotel would pay the city back for years...decades. SLC is like the perfect place for a convention.

If they do build it, I really hope that it is an architectural marvel. SLC has some of the absolutely ugliest hotels that I have seen on the West side. Real blunders of imagination.Cheap and ugly blunders.

Well, I just checked the vote totals and the yays seem to have gained quite a bit since I checked a few hours ago.

I just hope that they do make this one an iconic landmark. It should reflect the city in a positive way, just like the Hotel Utah did in years past. I certainly don't want to see an exterior design along the same vane as the Hyatt and Sheraton in Phoenix and Denver. They remind me of a typical suburban Days Inn, except taller. I hope it will be along the same line of quality as the new Regent, Tower 1 and the HPT.

I think the location should depend on connectivity and desired effect.

The best location for effect from their list would be West Temple and 1st South. That would effect CCC, Main and the future Theater. It is also close to Trax.

I personally feel that 2nd South and 2nd West is to far away from anything currently and may be a drawback to the area.

The most ideal location would be 2nd South and West Temple on the NW corner directly connecting to the Salt Palace.

I agree with you, the best location, as UrbanBoy has pointed out many times is directly on the property with the Salt Palace, the exact corner you pointed out Makid.

I think the next best location would be on either West Temple between 100 and 200 S or demo the Shilo and place it on that corner. Those three locations have the best connectivity and are still in the heart of the city.

Another decent location is were the Wyndham currently sits on S Temple, but there is nothing inherently wrong with that hotel so there is no need to tear it down to build another one.

The Japan town block is a bad idea, while there is room on the SE corner of that block, it doesn't face any main doors, and faces the loading docks. If Japan town weren't still there, a little bit. I wouldn't be against placing the hotel on the SE corner of 200 S and 300 W facing 300 W. That is close to an entrance also close to ESA and is currently a surface parking lot.

Here is something I had proposed over a year ago. I had wished that Marriott would have taken advantage of the CCC construction to remodel the downtown Marriott and purchase the air rights above Nordstrom and build either of these two version. I think I estimated this additional tower would have brought the downtown Marriott to 1,000 rooms. I didn't place the new towers in the south elevations, just the west, sorry.

I would hope that it is beautifully designed. That is the kind of building people really remember. Nothing like the memory of a great hotel to bring you back.

"tall" is way behind quality design.

Perhaps they can do both.

"Really tall" wears away really fast if it is boring especially when it is going to be sitting there for years and years.

I never knew that the city owned the stadium. I always assumed it was one of LHM's properties.

It's not that the name of the field is any more lame than Franklin Quest or Franklin Covey Field, it's simply the fact that it's new and different. I'm sure there was a big out cry of "Franklin Covey Field, that's lame, we should rename it Dirks Field" when the new stadium was first built.

In two years we'll all be used to it and in 5 years we'll probably stop calling it Franklin Covey Field by mistake.

I know we can all now say, I always liked the name, blah blah blah. It happens all over the country in stadiums of every size, it's the simply fact of corporate sponsorship and naming rights.

I hated the name Franklin Quest (then Covey), too.

With that said, yes, the city owns the ballpark. When they tore down Dirks and built the stadium back in the early 90s, there was an entire plan to redevelopment the area around the ballpark, as it had fallen on hard times. Their original plans called for something similar, though on a lesser scale, to Wrigleyville, which surrounds Wrigley Field in Chicago.

15 years later...and the area is still pretty crappy.

The SLC RDA does a have a designated RDA area known as the Ball Park and has incentive packages for developers. I think it will simply take the right developer and the right product, combined with those incentives to get the project off the ground.

I have driven around the area brainstorming ideas of how to develop it and there really is HUGE potential for the neighborhood. One glaring issue I see with a few ideas I have had are the mamoth electrical transimission lines that run down 1300 S, usually on the south side but cross to the north at the ball park then back to the south. These lines make it difficult to envision anything on a large enough scale to be worth while and to truly transform the area.

Put those underground and the area is ripe for redevelopment. IMO

This may or may not be the case with Spring Mobile Field....but I know I for one still hate the name Energy Solutions Arena--Delta Center for me thanks!
