I think they are going to put in a parking garage in place of the mines building. At least that is what is in the new campus master plan.

Steven, Thanks as always for keeping us updated on the U. of U. It's amazing how many different projects are going on up there.

Twenty miles blah, LOL. You make me feel guilty about my lack of cardio right now. I'm hitting the weights religously, but no cardio. I'd like to get 3 sessions a week of something related to cardio.


At this point, there's allot of things I like about the Hyatt Gateway. I like it's proximity to the street, and the large windows at ground level. Like Projects, I also really like that glass touch up the front and it's angular top.

Jon Huntsman Jr. served up the most broad-based changes to Utah's alcohol policy in four decades Monday, signing legislation doing away with the state's one-of-a-kind private clubs law and changing the way restaurants can serve drinks...

Provisions of Utah's new liquor laws:
» Existing restaurants will be able to tear down the "Zion Curtain," the partition that keeps restaurant servers from passing a drink across the bar. (Effective May 12)

» New restaurants will have to comply with approved floor plans that remove the mixing of drinks from the view of those under age 21.

» Existing restaurants can qualify for $30,000 in grants for renovations to move their drink mixing away from those under 21 years old.

» Removes requirement that state liquor stores put a sticker on every bottle sold.

» New liquor license requirements for convention centers and a new resort license will take effect.

» Requirement that bar patrons be a member of a "private club" will be eliminated, although bars can remain private clubs if they choose. (Effective July 1, 2009)

» Bars will be required to scan the driver license of any patron who appears to be under 35 years old.

» State liquor stores will be open on election days.

» Liability limit for bars that serve drinks to intoxicated patrons involved in accidents will increase to as much as $2 million -- the highest in the nation. (Effective July 1, 2010)

I forgot what they are doing to replace the lost parking spaces. Are they going underground or relocating? I don't see any parking structures in that picture. This project is fantastic, I only wish that they would have built this when I was there. I think the University of Utah's master plan is moving in the right direction. They need to create more of a university atmosphere and reasons for people to stay. Since it is a commuter school, this is especially important and challenging. If they are able to create a better environment, then you may see a greater demand for students wanting to live near the school.

Oddfellows Hall project remains stagnant as moving deadline comes and goes

SALT LAKE CITY -- Tuesday was the day construction crews were supposed to finish one of the most ambitious building moves ever, but the Oddfellows Hall project is hung up and still awaiting a final go-ahead, primarily because the two companies involved still haven't sorted out what to do and who's going to do it....

A consultant came in and determined again that it's safe to move it, but that's not the issue hanging things up...

There may be new requirements, such as covering the ground with steel plates. The $6 million price tag seems likely to go up. "I would assume that's the case. There's been no discussions, however, with GSA about contract amounts. It's been about: How do you get the building across the street," Rindlisbacher said.

The timetable is still unclear, but Layton Construction admits it will be at least several months before it can be completed, if the federal GSA gives the final go-ahead.

so, how do you guys think we could encourage small local businesses to open up on Main street. I thought when sugar house was ripped out they would for sure have moved to state and Maine but I was wrong.
I heard the government is investing in small businesses through government loans, do you guys think this will help? I love talking about development but I think we need to remember to look more qualitatively at our downtown.

I think small business loans will do a little bit to help revitalize Main St. I have heard for several years now that many of the landlords on Main simply aren't interested in renting their space if they can't get top dollar for the square footage. Many of them can claim a loss of revenue on their bottom line, due to these vacant store fronts. Small, local business owners have a hard time taking that leap to rent on Main, even with the city help, because they may be nervous that once the help runs out they will have to move because they may not be able to sustain their profits.

I know I harp on this often but the key to downtown and Main Street is not only an increase in office workers, that will help daytime business, but an increase in residents, this will help day and night time business. If I were a local business owner looking to move, start or expand a business I would investigate pedestrian traffic at all hours of the day. While there is an ok amount of foot traffic on Main I don't see that there is enough to sustain more businesses than are currently there. Things like CCC and larger attractions such as Keys and the new restaurant opening in the Daynes Building can be a key component, along with city loans to attract additional businesses to Main St.

I think the climate is really harsh right now for retail on main, but the kinds of businesses that can survive, I think are the one of a kind attractions that people are willing to inconvenience themselves with for a special trip... things such as an upscale local restaurant, or a unique bar such as Keys, a rare exhibit, or a boutique clothing store carrying brands you can't find elsewhere, etc. Until there is a 24 hour population surrounding the immediate area, stores are going to have to be of the kind that can draw people into an inconvenient commute.
