I notice a new store opening soon in Brunswick Square: Je Suis Prest Boutique. Is this a national chain or a local shop? I'm under impression it's another ladies fashion store, though it'd be nice to have men's clothing too...

Just drove by today... All they did was move the signs from outside, to inside the windows of the dealership, But yeah, they are still there.

Agreed. I read the title of the article and thought to myself "oh no, not again," but for once, the public opposition is warranted. A quick search of the address has the proposed site not far before the entrance to the Zoo, which is definitely a poor choice of location for six-storey condominiums. I'd be more supportive of this sort of development along the University Avenue corridor, which I think should, in the long term, be slated for intensification. A lot of the pieces necessary for higher density, such as the high-capacity infrastructure and public transit service, are already established there.

I was reading an old deed the other day for a property on Prince Edward and it was referred to as Brussels Street. This is the street name on my 1882 city map, though it was Prince Edward on my 1930's city sketch.

I ws going to about this the other day, and your post reminded me.

I was snowshoeing on the lake that this overlooks last weekend and the condos would have changed the natural feel of the area. I think one or two storey commercial condos might fit in the area better than the proposed apartment style residential condos.

Comedy Awards coming...

'We're now in the big leagues'; Comedy awards coming to SJ

March 18, 2009 - 4:27 pm
By: Sherry Aske News 88.9

SAINT JOHN - New Brunswickers will be enjoying a few laughs this October as the Canadian Comedy Awards and Festival comes to the Port City.

The festival will bring the top 100 comics in Canada to Saint John for four days.

Tourism New Brunswick's Sally Cummings said the event should boost tourism and the economy.

"Huge economic spinoffs for the local community," she said.

"We'll have people staying in hotels, eating in restaurants, the Imperial Theatre, those kinds of facilities and it also puts Saint John on the map."

"We're now in the big leagues."

The estimated cost to host an event of this size is roughly $500,000.

The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency has donated $125,000 to the cause, the rest will come from ticket sales and sponsors.

they looked cleaner on the camera sorry, anyways the shots of Union from the burial grounds looked dense, bright. I've still got a lot to learn about my camera, and I'll get to put up Union as it should be seen.

I'm not sure if this is significant but there is some work being done at the building beside Distant Waters on Water Street.

SJ project map is up and running! You can get to it from my signature.
I didn't include the KV or Grand Bay because the map file would have been enormous. If there's a need, I can add them later. As it was, I had to use a smaller scale for the city itself to get it all in. To make up for that, I included an inset of Uptown SJ at the top.

Anyway, I'm going to need a lot of help finding all the projects around town. I've included the new point feature that the Moncton and Freddy maps have. Basically, you click on the map where you want a point, fill in some boxes and PM me with the results, then I add the point to the map. It goes a lot faster than it might seem and we've had great success putting the Freddy map together quickly now that everyone can contribute.

Anyway, if anyone has any comments or suggestions, please pass them on. this whole project map thing is definitely still a work in progress.

The work on the ground floor of the Mercentile Centre seems to be coming along. There was a group of contractors there this morning as I walked to work. It's good that the empty spaces left by Matteos and Labatt will soon be filled.

I agree, every time I walked through there it seemed so sad that the space was going un-used. The Halifax forum talks a lot about their Class A office crunch, but Saint John has nearly run out of space as well and if new building proposals aren't put together for Uptown, a lot of the new space is in danger of being built in more suburban areas like the East Side. I'm still hoping that a private developer buys into the North of Union project like was initially proposed, it would be a huge boon to Uptown if a new building (even as small as 9-10 stories) was built up there - not to mention it would finally make Brunswick Square a little less dominant in our skyline.

Chateau Saint John seems to be moving more quickly these days after that slow Winter. Maybe they'll make their Fall opening afterall.

If you feel energetic enough feel free to create one for Halifax I'm getting very lazy with my maps

But good work on the current maps.
