I actually don't hate these towers...gives a bit of architectural variety to Vancouver. I think there's a charm to concrete! (sometimes)

I agree. As a Westender, I appreciate the fact that, but for the loss of Miriams, this little corner has remained relatively unchanged since it was built. Of course, the vibe may change once the Coast converts to condos (as far as I know, that's still a go for 2011). If Denman were a tad wider, a streetcar would be great, I'd like to see them lose the bridge access at the North end though - that would minimize the WE drive-through between 4-630 every night.

These discussion should be in the downtown thread and not the general thread which is for items in Vancouver but not downtown.

Just to wrap up, the Coast hotel will change to rentals, not condos. Also those buildings are in no danger of being knocked down, you don't spend that kind of money to knock something down. Not to mention they are non-complaint with current zoning, so if you knocked them down you would not be able to rebuild them at those densities. There is also the little problem that you would have to replace the rental units 1 for 1. So you might was well learn to love them, they'll be with us for a few more decades.

Big housing announcement tomorrow
March 16th, 2009

The premier’s office is sending out the word that he will be announcing big bucks tomorrow. That will likely include at least the first of the city’s 14 new social-housing sites, which Housing Minister Rich Coleman told me would be under way by April 1. Let the stimulating begin.
VANCOUVER - Premier Gordon Campbell will announce infrastructure funding which will create thousands of new jobs across the province. As part of that funding, Premier Campbell will announce details of housing projects set to begin construction in Vancouver.

Had alot of fun with this new toy today at work. It was a slow day.

interestingly google isn't offering it yet, but the data is from them, not sure how Canpages is getting away with it, as you can clearly see people on the streets and I beleive that is the issue that was preventing google from releasing it. Oh well enjoy it now incase we lose it.

Click on street view and walk around the city, not all roads have it only the ones with the blue dots.

The plans for 2080 W Broadway have been released to the public, I think most of you will be surprised by the size of it. There's going to be a lot of people complaining about this one. Not sure where the IGA shoppers will end up parking now. If you're having trouble with the pdfs you might want to save them first onto your computer before opening. Anyways enjoy

If you zoom in on people's faces you'll notice that they've been blurred out. That's probably why they're allowed to have the images up. That would be a tedious job for someone to do.

Thanks for pointing the site out to us!

Why is it an issue to show peoples faces? Taking photos of people is in no way illegal even without their consent. But, whatever, it's just more work for them...

Thanks for this! I'll have a read when I'm more awake. I can't imagine the IGA would be able to stay open if people can't park - they'll just go elsewhere. Same goes for the liquor store.

Actually, the people that have BMWs go to the Capers or Safeway on 4th. The Arbutus IGA seems to serve a 'poorer' clientele, at least that's what it looks like. The IGA that's on Vine is the one I walk to all the time. It's way to small though...

From what I gather, detailed images that make it possible to recognize individuals may be considered personal information under PIPEDA. With some exceptions (that probably aren't applicable here), organizations can't collect, use, and disclose personal information without consent.

I noticed this article on the Sun's website today - does anyone know where/what this research facility is? Is it under construction now, or something new?

West Vancouver man helps fund $41.5m research facility

Vancouver Sun - March 21, 2009 6:01 PM

A West Vancouver businessman has made one of the largest donations in Vancouver General Hospital's history, allowing it to build a seven-storey research facility. Robert Ho, a Buddhist philanthropist and former journalist, has donated $15 million to the VGH and University of B.C. Hospital Foundation. His gift -- plus contributions from the provincial and federal governments -- will cover construction costs of about $41.5 million. The building will carry Ho's name and will house three research programs. It is expected to be completed in 2011.

I've been waiting to see this for ages and they don't even do the North Shore at all? Better be a work in progress.

Thanks for the link though.

This will be a hip/joint research lab and I think it will have an operating room designed specifically for this type of surgery. The design of the building is fantastic, though I don't have any renders. It will be built at 10th and Laurel.
