There's a real strong demand or push to have a nice luxury hotel nearby McMaster. Visitors Inn is not cutting it.

If you look at Universities across Canada there's usually always nice hotels around a large University. Currently we're booking everything at Sheraton.

For a city its size, Hamilton is grossly under-serviced by hotels.

That has always been the case. But it looks like things are about to change. There are at least 4 hotel developements scheduled for the downtown that I have heard of.

There is the one Harry Stinson has proposed on John st where the old Liason College was. Then there is the Hilton at Bay and Main and a Holiday Inn at Queen and King. The newest proposal is at Walnut and Main. I think there may be a 5th proposal as well but I am not sure of the location downtown. It's supposed to replace the one on Market St. which is being converted to a seniors residence.

Feds (David Sweet) will be touring McMaster on Thursday afternoon. Don't know if it'll include an announcement or anything.

University and city partner on safety initiative

April 16, 2009
http://dailynews.mcmaster.ca/story.cfm?id=6098

A new radar sign overtop Cootes Drive on the western edge of campus helps remind motorists of the speed limit, while informing them how fast they are travelling as they drive towards Main Street.

The sign installed on the face of the Westaway Road bridge is part of the University's ongoing traffic and pedestrian safety management plan and is jointly funded by McMaster University and the City of Hamilton. Last summer the City of Hamilton made the portion of Cootes Drive on the west campus a 50 kmph zone and the radar signs are a visual reminder to slow down before the crosswalk at Sanders Boulevard.

"We are pleased with the shared effort with the City of Hamilton, ward 1 counsellor Brian McHattie and community members to enhance the safety of our campus and the surrounding area for pedestrians," says Terry Sullivan, director of security and parking services. "By increasing the number of visual reminders around campus we hope to raise awareness for both motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution."

A program is already underway at McMaster to make campus a more pedestrian-friendly space including painting every crosswalk with a large grid, using fluorescent paint for crosswalks, increasing the amount of stop signs on campus roads and encouraging the use of sidewalks.

"These are safe zones as pedestrians cross and move about campus," said Sullivan. "Most people walking around campus are using the designated sidewalks but these visual reminders are helpful to reinforce the importance of safety."

McMaster University and the City of Hamilton will continue to monitor campus and the surrounding area to enhance mobility for both pedestrians and motorists.

That would bring us further away from the city's goal to be the best place to raise a family. Unless of course you are raising a family of rats or moles ...

Bratina: Mac ‘too big,’ needs downtown campus

April 22, 2009
Eric McGuinness
The Hamilton Spectator
http://www.thespec.com/News/BreakingNews/article/553005

Hamilton Councillor Bob Bratina calls McMaster University “an unwieldy leviathan ruining everything around it.”

Mac is a “university that has grown way too big on its site,” Bratina said in commenting on a private developer’s bid to build a 10-storey apartment tower to house 600 students between Rifle Range and Ewen roads south of Main Street West.

“There’s nothing we can do but allow Mac to continue creating a huge nuisance for the neighbourhood,” the downtown councillor told other members of city council’s economic development and planning committee Tuesday.

Councillor Brian McHattie, who represents the area, said: “Certainly Councillor Bratina’s comments are warranted. I have had meetings encouraging McMaster to set up a downtown undergraduate campus.”

West Mountain Councillor Terry Whitehead, who has complaints about student housing around Mohawk College, said he agrees with both Bratina and McHattie and thinks the city should encourage other universities to locate downtown if McMaster isn’t interested in expanding its presence there.

................I've cutted the Ewen proposal out of the article.

I really think Hamilton City Centre would be a ideal building for McMaster new downtown undergraduate campus. I believe Terry Cooke tried to do this with McMaster, obviously no success. It be firggin fantastic if they relocated the School of the Arts department to City Centre.

With the main federal minister (Tony Clement) coming to McMaster it must be big. Fingers crossed it'll include funding for Education Square.

So I went down to see if there was any posters or renderings up where the announcement will take place and nothing. Just chairs. Seem like this was a last minute announcement.

Mac reactor gets $22 million to boost isotope production

Canadian Press
http://www.thespec.com/News/BreakingNews/article/572861

HAMILTON - McMaster University will be able to boost Canadian production of much needed medical isotopes with $22 million in government funding.

The money from the federal and provincial governments will go to upgrading Mac's nuclear reactor - with a portion going toward medical isotope production.

The Chalk River, Ont., nuclear facility produces up to half the global supply of medical isotopes used to detect cancer and heart ailments.

But a heavy-water leak shut down the 52-year-old reactor two weeks ago and the company says it will be out of action for at least three months.

The McMaster reactor is the only Canadian one outside of Chalk River capable of producing the isotopes.

The funding will also help pay for upgrades to McMaster's Nuclear Research Building and to accommodate and support new labs and research.

That is excellent news. Should help to boost nuclear medicine at Mac. I wonder how much they produce right now in dollar values of medical isotopes.

McMaster's reactor has the potential to produce medical isotopes, but currently doesn't have the capability to do so. This investment will equip them so they can produce medical isotopes.

The title of the article is alluding to global production of medical isotopes.

It'll produce a lot of jobs. Probably 20 or 40 jobs.

The feds want to sell off the Chalk River nuclear facility to a private company. So more and more people will be using the Mac Nuke facility.
