Sam Jones has cancer (multiple myeloma). Prognosis seems good and his staff say he will seek reelection.

P.S. All my pictures from Mardi Gras, Downtown, and Spring Hill College are linked at the bottom of the last page.

That is the courthouse annex that wraps around the Mobile Bar Associations Headquarters. The Courthouse property that will become the Mardi Gras Park is just east of this new building and is currently being used as the staging ground for the annex construction.

Oh. I guess that was kinda obvious... it's really exciting to FINALLY see something being done. What about the new Fed. Courthouse? Any news on that?

I think many thought that the money would come from the stimulus package but that seems to be far less for infrastructure than first thought. I did read that this is one of the highest priority needs by the GSA...maybe that will help.

County Music Venues Coming to Alabama
Several country music singers are making a big announcement in Birmingham today. Tracy Lawrence, Marty Stuart, and Darryl Worley are holding a news conference to discuss an entertainment circuit in Alabama. They want to have venues in Dothan, Montgomery, Mobile, Birmingham and Huntsville; creating a series of major entertainment complexes. The group claims these entertainment destinations will create thousands of jobs and millions of tax dollars and charitable contributions.

Let me make it clear that I'm not disparaging this idea in any way. I'm not a snob who somehow thinks country music is beneath us all nor do I dispute that it can be a good thing economically and/or provide entertainment to an appreciative audience.

But I do want to make a comment that I think these singers are pretty "crafty". And I mean all these guys from the Vegas circuit to Branson to this idea. This "nostalgic" type of set up guarantees and extends their career long after it would have been over. Good for them. If it sells, I can't judge. It may not work as single acts going to dive bars at random. But as packs of has-beens singing in groups at venues, it probably works very well. I actually sort of salute this type of entrepreneurship. It's a pretty good concept IMO. Protecting their future.

That said, I've never been sold that "entertainment" of any sort grows the economy very efficiently without tourism specifically wanting to come see it. You give me $7 and I'll show you a bike trick. That doesn't grow our economy much. You give me $7 and I'll show you a bike trick while sending $5 of it to Nashville or Universal Studios seems like it might actually shrink the local economy. Now if tourists want to come...that's another equation. Maybe they have the group of Lorrie Morgans to pull that off.

They never mention what venue they will use in Mobile. If I were a betting man, I bet they plan on using the new racetrack as their venue for Mobile or The Wharf. I doubt we get a new project to discuss out of this deal. I kind of hope it is the race track. They have always mentioned Branson style entertainment venues when discussing the entertainment portion of that project. Maybe their interest would help nudge that project of the drawing board and into reality.

That looks good to me. What is on that corner now? Is that the lot where there used to be a crappy bank building and then they cleared it.

ditto Musk...you can survive longer in a pack than as a solo. Sounds like a bigger version of the FAIR is coming to town.

That land is going to eventually be a hotel. Most likely a Hyatt Place. The same developer did the Hampton downtown. I know the parking guru of downtown who knows all and sometimes shares tidbits of wisdom with me...like the above.

EP...Jesus , as part of the Godhead, likewise created the barrier islands which we taxpayers are determined to endlessly rebuild by spending more money to pill up sand which WILL WASH AWAY. Now there is $400,000 wasted. Pass the hat among homeowners and buy a dump truck load with the proceeds.
