why is that a bad idea? i would grow my own food if i didn't live in a high rise. relying on a third party for your basic survival is a really bad idea. theyre just there to make a profit and thats it. not to mention the very high likelihood of food shortages and skyrocketing prices THIS summer. pull your head out of the soil and plant some carrots.

^ I agree. What's wrong with thinking outside the box? I personally would never grow anything but I think it's a good idea to efficiently use all land even if that means argiculture in odd places.

I bet you the people at the Fairmont originally thought that this was a fucktard idea:

The Fairmont Waterfront Hotel in Vancouver, British Columbia, saves its restaurant $30,000 a year in food costs by growing herbs, flowers and vegetables on its roof.

I'm all for increasing urban agriculture. I like that Vancouver experiments with different ideas like this. A bit unorthodox perhaps but kinda neat in my mind.

I think there's a higher probability of people getting sick from growing their own food in an urban environment than buying organic food.

i dont follow this logic. growing your own food items is a whole different debate than organic/conventional.

most food that is labeled organic is still produced by conventional means. ie grown on a factory farm in Chile or New Zealand and shipped half way around the world. this leads to high oil (scarcity what??) inputs, lower nutritional content, and poor taste

on the other hand locally grown produce could be pumped full of chems. local does not equal organic. these are 2 different debates that both need to be addressed.

and how does it even make sense that people would get sick growing their own food? they certainly dont get sick from eating Chinese candy or maple leaf cold cuts or.... the list could go on forever

I wonder how many people actually look into where the organic food is from and whether it's grown beside a non-organic property or do they just see 'organic' and buy it. I haven't thoroughly researched organic foods but I'm a little skeptical as to just how much better it is.

But anywho, industrial farming is a new thing compared to sbusistence/personal farming. I'd say industrial farming has been a curse on our planet.

But I don't have my own plot of land or a garden so I have to rely on buying produce.

My only comment about the vegetable garden at City Hall is - on the NORTH side? I guess they'll have to find some shade loving vegetables!

Couple of infill sites not sure if I've mentioned them before but I don't think so, first one is small, the second one is a decent size.

553 West 7th Avenue
The development of a six-storey residential apartment with three levels of underground parking having vehicle access from the lane.

2080 West Broadway
To develop this site with a 7 storey mixed-use building containing retail uses at grade, and a total of 136 dwelling units on levels 2 to 6 over 3 levels of underground parking having vehicular access from the south lane.

Almost all UDP and DPB meetings have been canceled for the next few months as there are no projects going thru.

A T&T is going in there. Not sure if they'll keep their 1st Avenue location or have both. The Chinese population in the area could likely support two stores.

I would've liked to see an H-Mart or other Korean grocery store. I find them cleaner and with fresher produce. They also have a lot more Japanese stuff. Korean food has a lot in common with Japanese food, likely because of proximity and other reasons.

I know there's an Art Institute building (2 storey) going up across from the Renfrew Skytrain station (north side), which is close to the Rona there. Perhaps not what you are referring to though. There's also some hefty construction going on just east of Renfrew, near the tracks. Not sure what that is.
