Relative with the topic of retail, where is the upscale retail "district" of SLC?
That would've been in Holladay, at the Cottonwood development, but that project has been on hold for a couple months do to the economy (the company that owns the mall is nearly bankrupt). I wouldn't be at all surprised if the plans change and it never happens at all, but there's still a chance.

There are TONS of designer furniture stores on Highland Drive though, that's definitely the place to find expensive furniture.

But given the anemic economy, the crimson clay framed by small shrubs may be the only upgrade on the 4.5-acre parcel for the foreseeable future...

I thought that they were going to keep a lot of their same stuff to use in a new location? Like, hopefully a Main Street location. Or did the owners decide that they're not going to relocate?

Film bill lauded for big-budget possibilities

http://deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,705288864,00.html

...The current incentive levels are "not compelling" for big-budget films, Perry said. "That's the big thing about this particular bill. It allows us to get the big-budget films, and what follows those big-budget films are the studios that are producing them. … This is the bill that brings the studios to the state, (and) also brings the (TV) series."...

...Roger Armstrong, a Park City resident, former vice president of Universal Pictures and Tri-Star Pictures and currently an entertainment lawyer, described Utah's current incentive as "actually quite low."

"The studios and the independent producers are now looking at incentive packages of various states as a fundamental piece of their financing," he said....

..."I do believe that if you pass this, they will come," he said. "I think that they will build studios here. I think that the infrastructure required to make movies will grow out of this and I think that there will be a lot of other tangible benefits of having people come up here and see what this state has to offer."

For all of us who are involved in some way with the film (MP/TV) industry, or are just plain movie geeks, which is allot of us, this is a very exciting time to be in Salt Lake City. I'm very confident that the film industry will not only set up shop here in a major way, but that Salt Lake will become a top 3 production market along with L.A. of course, and New York.

Just one of the many things that is so attractive about the Wasatch Front is it's ability to double for sooo many cosmetically varied, different locations, and yet be so close and convenient to a major airport. Competitors such as Louisiana, No. Carolina, New Mexico etc. just can't compete with the abundance of convenient, varied locals and jaw dropping scenery that we have.

This will also go along way to firming up the intense interest that Hollywood is now showing toward the St. George area. Not only will Salt Lake become a much bigger filming mecca, but also St. George with it's new airport, major studio facilities under development, mild climate, and 'hop skip and a jump' distance from So. Cal. Utah in general will soon easily occupy a top 3 position in U.S. film production.

Blaze and Metro, are you as excited as I am!?!?

I'm actually incredibly excited!

And I'm also feeling quite special since you named me!

*tender moment*

And it's about freaking time!! Maybe the film industry will attract new major corporations to set up shop in Salt Lake, and maybe they'd set up new headquarters, and maybe we'd see some MAJOR new skyscrapers under development.... =D

Well, I know the Gov. is putting on a full court press now and aiming directly at the elite CEO's of major studios and companies, many of which have second homes in the Park City area. The idea goes something like, "You know Utah and love it, so why not set up shop here... we'll show you how." So far the indications have been that there is major interest and the campaign is being received really well.

One of the major positives in regard to the film industry is it's tendancy to flourish, especially in difficult economic times. Netflix and various film related business is soaring.

Some of the most beautiful office towers in the Los Angeles metro are entertainment related. I don't think that the Wasatch will be building any towers to house the industry anytime soon, but studio and accompanying projects, and certainly leasing various office space is always helpful. I do think there could be a major, very positive trickle down affect as a result of the film industry.

Maybe it is being disoriented to direction but I cannot tell what the taller building is in your nice photograph.

Someone let me know please.

Businees school vying for $23M building bond

The U David Eccles School of Business is asking the Utah Legislature for a $23 million bond to help build two new buildings.

The proposal, currently being debated by members of the majority Republican Caucus, will make up 29 percent of the total cost of the project, which aims to begin construction as soon as April, depending on the outcome of state budget meetings.

The project would be split into two phases: The first would begin with the demolition of the Madsen Building and the construction of a new building in its place. The new building will include 24 classrooms, compared with the eight classrooms in the Madsen Building, and will have 40 smaller “break-out rooms” for student use.

The entire project, which will take an estimated three and a half years to complete, will cover 180,000 square feet, 70 percent of which will be devoted to students, including study rooms, break-out spaces and student lounges.

Cross your fingers kids... I just had a phone interview that, if successful, could kick me out of California and put me into the Key Bank building! Right in the heart of the CCC construction!

Hey Steven,

Is the Madsen Building "FAMB" ? The round one sort of by the Art Museum? I wouldn't cry to see that one go. Too many horrible classes there. *shudder*
