Hey, isn't the LAPD Motor Pool being built on the site of the Vibiana Place proposal?

On another note, I'm not sure if I like the red balconies on the El Dorado, though they really make the building pop.

Oh, and thanks for the pics, petescafe.

Excellent pics, petescafe. I especially like the last one of Nickel Diner.

westside, to answer your question, no, the LAPD Motor Pool is not being built on the site of the proposed Vibiana Place tower. The tower is planned for the relatively small open lot (currently a recessed "pit") sandwiched between St. Vibiana and the Motor Pool. I spoke with Russell Brown a few weeks ago, and he says Gilmore plans to make it a very well-landscaped surface parking lot for the rest of Vibiana Place until the market turns around. But the tower is still the ultimate plan for that lot.

I don't think they're going to remain red. It looks like they'll be painted gray like the ones underneath all the red ones. Red, from what I've seen from other balconies, seems to be a "default" color and then owners choose what color they want to paint over them. That's my assumption.

Love this shot petescafe! Thanks again for updating us with your pics. I can't believe that the Gold Line will be opening up in a few months! I'm thinking another 5 months (July?) and we may be able to ride this thing all the way to ELAC! :-D

And one of my favorite things about the new Gold Line is that we finally don't have to WAIT FOREVER in the trains at Union Station anymore. Union Station will probably be just like another stop - door opens - door closes! And hopefully trains heading southbound from the Chinatown station won't have to slow down to a crawl when coming up to Union Station like it does now. Can you tell I'm excited?

Yes, the lag at Union is ridiculous and damn annoying. anyone have a definite answer regarding this?

^ I think it's a pretty good assumption on my part only because I've experienced the same thing not only at ALL terminus stations here in LA, but in NY as well. For some reason, terminus stations become pick up spots and they take forever. Without being a terminus, Union Station doesn't have a reason anymore to wait that long. Again, maybe PV/WC or Westsidelife (our wonderful rail experts )can confirm this...

Famima Expanding Downtown

News Briefs

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES - The Japanese convenience store Famima!! is set to open its fifth Downtown location on March 3. Like other area outposts, the store at 700 Wilshire Blvd. will feature an array of sandwiches, salads, sushi and Japanese snacks. The store also has a reputation for an eclectic inventory that includes items like A-1 steak sauce and fancy stationary. "We like to say we redefine convenience," company Vice President Pervez Pir said. The company is not stopping there, as it plans to open a store on the ground floor of the Roosevelt Lofts at Seventh and Flower streets in the middle of the month, then in May, a seventh Downtown Famima is slated to go in at Union Station. The 700 Wilshire Blvd. store will host a four-day sale with merchandise giveaways, a lunch raffle and more.

Union Station is a terminus station. Generally, all trains coming into term stations come in slowly because station control has to put them on the right track to either wait or be the next train to depart. It's same with North Hollywod, Wilshire/Western, Redondo Beach, Norwalk, etc....

Basically, Union Station doesn't do it any differently.

Super excited about Famima at Union Station!

Anyone know where it's gonna go? Hopefully not in the place of existing retail.

I'm guessing that the red color is not exactly a "default" color, but rather a common color for primer that goes on the bare metal prior to the actual paint to improve oxidation resistance, adhesion, etc.

Money for the courthouse

I read on the San Diego page that Los Angeles and SD had gotten federal money to finish their court houses. Any word on that?

^ i was thinking that stimulus money should be applied for that. LA needs about a billion according to the last report, but i suspect they can build it for less than that in this market. hopefully we get the original building that was 23 stories (or was it 19).

^ I don't think it's money for the Federal Courthouse. It's money that could be applied to the County Courthouse, which basically means being torn down and removed!

Here is an Austin paper commenting on why Austin will receive a new courthouse from the stimulus plan and why L.A. will not.

Austin judge 'optimistic' stimulus bill will yield new courthouse
Downtown building among seven in U.S. with design and site acquisitions completed.

By Steven Kreytak
AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF
Thursday, February 19, 2009

Austin's federal judges are "hopeful and optimistic" that the federal stimulus bill signed by President Barack Obama on Tuesday could include funding for a new federal courthouse downtown, said U.S. Magistrate Judge Andy Austin.

The bill allots $5.5 billion to a federal buildings fund, of which $750 million will go toward the construction of federal buildings and U.S. courthouses. The largest portion of that fund, $4.5 billion, is for making federal buildings more energy-efficient.

The bill does not specify which buildings or courthouses will be funded, but Judge Austin said a House-Senate conference report stipulated that $450 million go to build a new headquarters for the Department of Homeland Security.

That leaves $300 million for other federal buildings or courthouses. Where the money goes is up to the General Services Administration, which must submit a spending plan to congressional appropriations committees within 45 days.

Judge Austin said he knows of no federal buildings that are ready to be built. However there are seven cities, including Austin, where design and site acquisition have been completed for new federal courthouses, according to a December letter to congressional leaders from the director of the Judicial Conference of the United States.

First on the list is a San Diego courthouse, estimated to cost $110.4 million. Second on the list is a Los Angeles courthouse, at $530 million. Third is the Austin courthouse, estimated to cost $116.1 million.

Because the San Diego project already has funding and there is not enough money in the bill to pay for the Los Angeles courthouse, Judge Austin says the Austin courthouse could be funded under the bill. "We are keeping our fingers crossed," he said.

City Manager Marc Ott, meanwhile, said Wednesday that Austin has significantly beefed up its lobbying team in Washington to maximize what it can get out of the federal stimulus package.

The planned seven-story Austin courthouse will be built at the corner of Fifth and Nueces streets, across from Republic Square Park. The design is mostly done.

I don't see enough money in there to build the LA Courthouse according to that article, so I wouldn't hold your breath. Which is, like, a bummer man.

So, are we talking at least five years before ground-breaking on the Courthouse?

^ Somehow I think $5 per 30 Min. is pretty darn expensive, even though it's across from L.A. Live.

It's $5 for the first 90 minutes, then $5 per 30 minutes after that, maxing out at $20. So if you stayed for 2 hours (and validated), it would be $10. $20 for 3 hours or more (with validation). Pretty standard for parking prices in larger entertainment districts like Hollywood or the Sunset Strip.
