Cameras installed at Pioneer Park

In their continuing effort to clean up Pioneer Park and rid it of its reputation as being a home for drug dealers, Salt Lake police Wednesday unveiled four surveillance cameras set up on each side of the park.

"This is really a supplement to what we have been doing and plan on doing in the future," said Salt Lake Police Chief Chris Burbank.

The goal of using cameras is to deter crime, detect crime and increase or enhance the ability to prosecute crimes committed at the park with improved evidence provided by the cameras, he said. Burbank points to other cities such as Washington, D.C., and Chicago where similar camera systems have been successful. But he admits the effectiveness of Salt Lake's program "remains to be seen."

I like the concept. People may say "privacy violation", however if one has nothing to hide, then why worry.

London has a very extensive system throughout which has worked quite well.

It is quite disturbing to see parkland, something that people strife to achieve for there neighborhoods, become a haven for thugs.

Somehow I think Mr Mabey will no longer be allowed to discuss this project in public anymore. Did he jsut say that the people who hired him is known for completing "plastic jobs" I bet Inland is mad as hell about that comment.

Isn't that what they said about the Do Not Fly list?

Not saying I disagree with cameras in a public park, but that isn't a comforting excuse to give because I think we've seen throughout history, you don't have to do anything wrong to be found guilty.

A fairly new band, White Tie Affair, was in SLC a few months ago and shot a mock news video in the KUTV Ch 2 News studio. It's really funny! You can tell it's a fairly recent video because you can see 222 S. Main in the background. Unlike most Disney movies, this one actually says its Utah and not some other place. It's called the "Wake the F**k up Morning Show" with special guest, Kelly Raspberry (a puppet). It's so freaking halarious

I understand what you are saying. I was to referring to examples of how public surveillance led to falsified guilt.

I apologize that my question was not clear.

I do not like to see this thread become a political debate on public surveillance. Therefore any comments based upon my statement(s) about public surveillance will be answered via pm towards the respective individual. Fair?

I like the idea of opening up a passage between Regent St. and Main. it could make it feel a lot less like an alley and really make the area a lot more pedestrian friendly.

Very nice, I like the look of Regent Street. I think that rendering is more detailed than previous ones. So it looks like when all is said and done, you discovered where they're actually going to end up putting the convention hotel, LOL. Great find, thanks Ark.

This is only going to make the park worse.

It looks taller then Tower 1 which is 32 stories and it is also down hill. So I put it at approximately 40 stories.

The scale of the buildings looks completely wrong. Look at some of the buildings like the Marriott, Richards Court, First Security, Qwest.
I wouldn't read very far into the height of the proposed building, especially considering that this is just a long-range master plan and as far as I know there is no actual proposal.

Seeing these detailed renderings like The Regent and Regent Street is making me so hyper. Man, I'm going to bust a gasket by the time CCC is completed. I'm sooo damn encouraged by the quality of design, street presence and materials that are going into projects like 222 and CCC!!!!

Again, Terrible idea! this is prime retail space near CCC. Arrow Press Square is full of older historic buildings. Next time you're downtown, please explore the square. It has a lot of potential! There is plenty of room on the Convention Centers existing property. I've posted this before, but I'll post it again:

I pretty much agree. It's just a security blanket for people there. It's not going to change anything over the long run.

As for my original point, Shak, I never suggested I opposed the cameras because of that reason. I only stated your excuse doesn't seem to make me feel any more comfortable because I don't buy that line that only the guilty have something to worry about.

Yes, Arrow Press Square is quite a place:


However, I have always thought these were both excellent locations for high-rises. If not for that exact location (right on top of the only buildings in the northwest corner), then definitely for the empty parking lots on that block. It would be cool if they could restore those buildings and mix in a modern development.

If developed right, Arrow Press Square could really develop into a nice little gathering place with sidewalk cafe's and eclectic interesting shops (neighborhood retail).

If a pedestrian connector were implemented from W. Temple through Arrow Press to the interior of the block connecting the future developed parking lot to the east along with the Dinwoody Plaza also connecting to the Rocky Mtn Power lot and down towards 200 S.

If they were to create some live work lofts on the upper floors I really think it could work.

Who has some $$$ laying around they want to spend? If you buy the square I'll develop it.

I want actual cops in the park reason A, how long do you think it will take them to respond to a crime they captured on the cameras and reason B, how often do you think there will be some body actually watching the park vie the cameras, despite what they tell you?
