^are you talking about the depth of the water? 40 feet seems awfully deep, necessitating dealing with much more water than I think they would want to.

This week's Freedom Tower update: If anything, people visiting the site at least have a visible symbol of the Freedom Tower rising and where it will stand on the overall site.

Steel over the core

Weird how the bottom ends of the vertical steel on the north side of the south core are attached to thin air.......

.... but hurray for the steel at last! The concrete core was rising so slowly, a transition was required.

Actually it still has about 105 left to go. I was just counting the floors of the Verizon building across the street. Right now WTC 1 has maybe about 3 or 4 floors on it because the lower floors have more height than the upper floors.

It's doubled it's height in a couple of weeks, but I'm not sure how much further it will rise without the north core.

Looks like the north core might be about to jump soon... Also, looking at the earthcam, lots of steel for the memorial has arrived. Should be interesting to watch the memorial grow, since steel is relatively quick to put together.

Great to see something finally rise. Looking back to the renderings though I can't help but feel that a significant architectural opportunity has been forever missed. The flower petal base on the spire looks so dated to me... just not excited about this at all but happy for New York to see it rise once and for all.

I'm a little confused about the steel that has recently been erected. Why the massive concrete core, with what over the months of watching has a crapload of reinforcing in it, and now transition to relatively light steel members? The steel columns around the perimeter are massive, but these new ones on top of the concrete core appear to be much smaller. Will the concrete core continue to rise and provide a solid protected center shaft for elevators and stairwells?

Sorry if this is a silly question, it just struck me as odd.

As already mentioned the steel columns are part of the core and will be encased in concrete, save for the connecting steel members with the perimeter steel columns. After encased in concrete it will appear as though the whole core is concrete.

The steel looks to be around the same height as the base of 7.

I'm not sure how soon the north core will jump, but they are working with lightning speed on the memorial steel.

I'm thinking that until the North Core catches up, there will not be anymore upward progress.
