I would think the Evergreen Line would be built in 3-4 years, most likely somewhere in between. If construction were to start this year, it'll be finished by mid-2012 at the very earliest and mid-2013 at the latest.

If they do any work this year, it will likely be on pre-construction things such as demolishing existing structures, relocating utilities, expanding the ROW along the Port Moody rail corridor.

There's still a long way to go beforce you'll see any guideway columns sticking out of the ground. Bid structuring (P3, DB etc.), RFQ, RFP, Negotiation with the prefered proponent, detailed design (i.e. finalizing track alignments), materials and labour aquisition etc.

It seems like even if the pre construction does start this year it will be forever until we actually ride the line, but then again the Canada line felt the same and now it is only months away from opening. The same goes for the Golden Ears bridge, i remember watching the barges on the river pile driving thinking how far away summer 2009 was. And now the superstructure is essentially done.

Looks pretty "shovel ready" to me.

But then again, it would sure "stimulate the local economy" to just redesign the whole darn thing again. Why not?

By the way, re: Trasolini... I still absolutely LOVE how his stance was intially COMPLETELY AGAINST SKYTRAIN in favour of LRT, citing "ugly overhead structures ruining the small-town feel of Port Moody." (As if the tens of thousands of daily commuter cars aren't already doing that!).
This statement INCLUDED a fly-over of Barnet highway. I asked him IN PERSON at one of the ill-fated LRT community meetings whether he would consider grade-seperation at the busy Barnet/St. Johns intersection. Even the LRT couldn't have any elevated structures in Port Moody. None.
It appears that he has softened his stance on the "no elevated structures" as skytrain will require a flyover or two. Good to see SOME form of reason in the guy.

I've created a new thread for a variety of intercity transport here.

Commuter Rail, Heavy rail, intercity rail, buses, airplanes and ferries.

This is a topic about the Evergreen Line, move it elsewhere or end it right now.

I think MrX has forgotten he isn't a mod anymore...

and who cares if they keep talking about it here, in a matter of hours it will get moved to the right thread and get continued on there.

^ naw, i just find it quite irritating when the topic completely goes way off its course....i couldn't care less if it gets moved later, the principle is that it's off-topic.

You know... talking about something that's off-topic... is off-topic in itself. This is not a thread of off-topicness!

Whoa... I need more sleep.

Back to the Evergreen Line. I must admit that it would have been preferable for an actual figure in the federal budget in terms of their ultimate financial contribution toward the Evergreen Line. Nevertheless, perhaps these tidbits provide some further insight:

Quote:
Evergreen Line negotiations are reportedly underway

Federal money for the Evergreen Line should be in the province’s hands within a month, says B.C.’s transportation minster.

Responding to doubts from critics on whether Tuesday’s budget promise of Evergreen funds will actually materialize, Kevin Falcon said negotiations are already well underway.

.......................................................

A spokesperson for Transport Canada, the agency that handles the Building Canada Fund, said the application process has been simplified and preliminary discussions on Evergreen are already underway.

When the shovel will actually get into the ground depends on decisions yet to be made on procurement, final design and engineering.

CP Rail spokesperson Michael Lovecchio said meetings will likely be scheduled in the next two weeks to begin negotiating the Evergreen Line’s alignment along CP Rail land.

So from some quoted third parties, it does appear that matters are moving forward.

Finally, routing Port Moody Mayor and Council are on record as insisting that tunneling continue under the Barnet Highway (not elevated as shown on recent maps) and continue ground level beside CP Rail Tracks.

Well, detailed design only begins once the contract has been awarded. In terms of preliminary design, I thinm most of those reports have be dusted off, and simply updated where needed. For example, the run-the-guideway-on-the-west-side-of-North-Road idea may no longer be an option, due to construction of several highrises there since that report was done.

Also, there will hopefully be another train yard thrown into the mix somewhere, which I dont think was in the original plan (the Edmonds yard is going to run out of space eventually). Also, there are two more stations this time around, a third Port Moody station, and a total of 3 stations along the Pinetree way corridor (compared to 2 before hand, one at the WCE, and one at either Lincoln or Guildford).

Aha...
Man, I can't believe the gall of Port Moody Council.
They've been BEGGING for rapid transit for years, and now that they've finally got the money coming together, they're still asking for sprinkles on top.

One elevated structure is NOT going to ruin the town.

elevated structure

The positioning of the end of the tunnel near Barnet and St John's is complex as if it is elevated over the Barnet Highway and continues elevated to the CP Rail Tracks, it not only impacts where the Murrey Street By-Pass can be built, it also effects how the 5 acre parcel that is currently owned by Andres Wine, will be developed. Andres Wine has proposed to build a Yale Town inspired development for this inlet fronted property and as there is little available land in Port Moody Centre, and densification near stations is another Translink requirement, inititial construction cost is not the only factor that must be considered during detailed route planning.

A "city" the size of Port Moody is damn lucky to be getting any rapid transit.

What about getting a P3 partner in this climate? Is the province going to be the lender? Hopefully it doesn't take long to get "shovels in the ground".
