But do we have any shovel ready plans for waterfront station? I thought a lot of that was still in the conceptual phase.

Here's the excerpt from Jim Flaherty's budget speech:

"...In British Columbia, funds will flow for the Evergreen Transit Line and for a more modern railway station in Vancouver — key projects as the city prepares to host the Olympic Winter Games."

Must be referring to Waterfront Station? Afterall, it's due for a makeover in light of new traffic resulting from the Canada Line and the additional Seabus.

Or is it Pacific Central Station, in light of the (long overdue) addition of a second Amtrak train running between Vancouver and Seattle?

Well they have been talking about updating VIA Rail infrastructure, maybe Vancouver's Pacific Central is included in part of those plans?

A little OT, but do you have any more info on improvement on the Vancouver-Seattle Amtrack run?

I'm leaning toward Pacific Central Station.

I believe it's a heritage structure but, in terms of improvements, perhaps a curved, half-moon, overhead enclosure for the out-dated boarding area to provide cover from the elements akin to what is seen in Europe?

Just throwing that out there.

I'm hoping for Waterfront Station rather than Pacific Central. For one thing, the Waterfront one costs a lot more and secondly, we'd get our moneys worth with Waterfront.

Evergreen Line mentioned in Jim Flaherty's budget, but no financial guarantee
By Charlie Smith

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty mentioned the proposed Evergreen Line once on page 143 of his 360-page budget document.

But there is no explicit promise of federal funds for the proposed $1.4-billion rapid-transit line, which would link Lougheed Mall with Coquitlam Centre via Port Moody.

That has upset Port Moody mayor Joe Trasolini, who said he hoped that Flaherty would include a $400-million federal contribution to the Evergreen Line as a "line item" in the budget.

"That doesn't give me a sense of certainty that the funding for the Evergreen Line is there," Trasolini told the Straight in a phone interview. "Clearly it is not."

Under the headline "Priority Projects", the budget lists 13 infrastructure projects that "could" be cost-shared with provincial and territorial governments.

The Evergreen Line, which would through the riding of Canadian Heritage Minister James Moore, is the only B.C. project on the list.

Clearly it's not? How did he come to that assumption. Trasolini really is a one trick pony.

Is Charlie trying to point this out as a negative? There were 13 projects listed... and guess how many provinces and territories there are in this country? Anyone care to wager a bet that there is one project listed from every province/territory?

The rail station is the VIA station at Main, not sure what their plans are but hopefully it's similar to my photochop in the other thread. Not all the new money is for shovel ready projects, although a good chunk of it is.

Word has it that the Evergreen line could begin work before the Rav line is even finished. Seems a lil optimist but we'll see.

i doubt it. the conservatives made some of the biggest budgets ever (2006, 2007) & dramatically ramped up spending since being elected. the liberals, like scott brison, did absolutely nothing but criticise the spending, even though it's probably part of the reason that Canada isn't having the same problems as the US or Europe.

On one of these forums there was a render of a new canopy at Pacific Central, has that been built?

Lol, I kinda figured Trasolini would start complaining as soon as I saw there was no specific dollar amount attatched. I can understand him wanting solid commitments given how much the line has been delayed, but he seems to be going needlessly out of his way to complain things. A lack of news articles on the topic does not nessicarily equal a lack of progress on it, Joe.

Also, in this case the "cost sharing" component from the feds is not a issue, since thats what was planned to happen all along, both Translink and the Province have budgeted their share, and the P3 partner will supposedly cough up the rest. I dont really think anyone was expecting the feds to cough up $1.4B...

Leftcoaster, you are correct, there is one project per province/territory, according to a post in the main Canada forum.

It's Transolini... he's a douche bag from the start.

If it is Pacific, hopefully it will be nicely integrated with the new Main St. Renovations plan. I wouldn't really count these projects as "stimulating" the economy though... it's quite minor. For something like Waterfront Station, that's quite a big project to accomplish. I have my doubts for Waterfront Station... I can't imagine Vancouver receiving funding for 2 major projects...

Waterfront has never been envisioned as an "anytime soon" project. In reality it's one of those studies that usually ends up collecting dust for most of a decade before it's redone/modernized and then it goes ahead. I'd be surprised if we see it before 2020 as much as I'd like to see it proceed sooner.

On a plus the evergreen line starting now will end up speeding up the UBC extension.

Lol! True. I'm hoping for a lot of chaos to be created when all the extra passengers from the Evergreen Line make their way to Broadway/Commercial...

It is Pacific Central

From the budget:
* Modernize VIA Rail Canada station in Vancouver

Eeks. Never thought of this. What would you recommend to fix this? Broadway is really becoming a bottleneck and I don't know if constant 4-car mark ii's will fix it.
