Those would be billboards all along the west side of Osborne between Broadway and St. Mary. The City Beautiful people who wanted an expansive civic forum centred around the Legislature must have tore at their eyes whenever they went down Osborne.

well if we could get great west life to move into a tower and vacate that ste it would work nicely heck could put the parking under it

wow didn't knowtice that befor even some on the east side where the public washroom was put

anyone remember the big blown up photos that were in borelis books? there was one of a crowed of peoplestanding around a ball park i have always wonderd where it was shot

MANITOBA HOTEL AND NORTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD OFFICES DESTROYED.

Winnipeg, Man., Feb. 9. -- The Manitoba Hotel and the Northern Pacific offices were completely destroyed by fire last night. Loss, $400,000.
The hotel was seven stories high, accommodating 400 guests, and was the finest Canadian hotel west of Montreal. It was built in 1891 by the Northern Pacific, and cost over $300,000. The company carried its own insurance, so the loss is total.
The fire brigade worked heroically under the disadvantages of a bitter north wind ahd the mercury 43 below. There were several narrow escapes, but no casualties, all having been given timely warning. Most of the walls have fallen. The freight sheds adjoining were saved.

Amazing overhead shot!

The building next to the stadium, along Colony, was the Amphitheatre (arena). North of that is Shea's Brewery, later Labatt's, which was torn down when GWL built their second (north) building. My grandmother grew up in the 20s in a house that was next door to the Amphitheatre. All the houses on the street (Whitehall Avenue), except one that is still standing at the SE corner of Balmoral, were demolished in the early 1930s to make way for the stadium. The street itself was eliminated altogether when GWL was built.

i feel pretty naive, this is the first i've heard of this beautiful hotel. man, that would be nice to have standing today.

^ given it's age, and location, I have serious reservations that this hotel would have made it past the 50's or 60's without getting demo'd.

anyhow the federal building sits where the manitoba hotel was so in the end we still have a great peac of architecture there

i'm prity sure some fire codes came as a result of that fire

i wonder how they demolished the ruins of it?

No, it was on the east side of Main Street, south of Portage. It looks to be close to where Earl's is now.

Here are a few more aerials I've scanned. These are all from 1954 or 1955.

Interesting here to see the new housing developments appearing in Norwood Flats and off in the distance the "infill" in Riverview and south of Jubilee that took up the old River Park site. The white stucco houses really stand out.

also anyone got photos of the white building at the sw corner of william and princess? where the cop bank is now

and hey i see some row houses by the steam plant still

i could find things in these photos for hrs lol
