The UK Building stairs are a broad flight of stairs - people can walk around it. For all we know, the entrance may be reconfigured in the future (or the building redeveloped).
Above grade, the elevator and the escalator entrance can't be lined up because below grade, that would mean that the elevator shaft would block the foot of the escalator.
Having the entrance south of Hastings is much better for CBD access than having it north of Hastings.

*****
The number of entrances would have also been kept low to save on overall costs - including escalators, ticket machines, future fare gates, etc.
At 41st and 49th, the decision to build underpasses rather than the preferred mezzanine stations (like Broadway City Hall) would have resulted from the additional cost of excavating a deeper station and guideway to allow for a mezzanine. (i.e. the cost of digging an underpass under the station, versus the cost of digging to lower the entire station to fit a mezzanine above it.)

Stadium station has had entrances added (Expo Blvd, the Silk Road side entrance), and one removed (the tunnel under Beatty Street, I used to use that one in the 80s)

Kinda stupid that the 111 Dunsmuir project didn't link the building with that tunnel. It's still there - filled in with sand - in case the Larwill Park project (old bus depot site) wants to be connected to SkyTrain.

Well I still don't think they should have done that for 41st Avenue Station since it is planned to become a future municipal centre. At least they could've made it more fair and dig the ticket concourse lower connecting with the underpass... then have escalators going up to the different platforms. For 49th Avenue, I don't think I mind as much as it would be more of the not-so-used stations on the Canada Line (or not as much).

I agree it'll be a pain in the butt for anyone heading northbound. Hopefully the bus stops will be located west of Cambie. That's also the longest traffic light in the City (together with Main & Terminal) (long pedestrian crossing times) - fully actuated with left turn signals in all directions.

Richmond Review
Rainbow wash for Canada Line
By Matthew Hoekstra - Richmond Review

Published: January 21, 2009 5:00 PM

Lite-Brite had a way of turning ordinary black paper into multicoloured works of art.

But unlike the decades old Hasbro toy, the city’s canvas is the Canada Line.

Richmond’s major projects director Greg Scott is proposing the city add some glitz to a a 180-metre stretch of concrete rapid transit line.

Lighting effects along No. 3 Road between Alderbridge Way and the entry road to Lansdowne Mall would add vibrancy to an otherwise unremarkable space, its proponents suggest.

But its opponents, who numbered five after a series of tests last year, complain of driver distraction, light pollution, poor aesthetics and cost.

The lighting, however, would avoid intersections and colours of a traffic stop light, Scott noted in a report to city council’s public works and transportation committee yesterday.

“In addition, this zone has been purposefully designed as a flexible, street-side public plaza capable of hosting a variety of civic celebrations and festivities such as farmers markets, weekend bazaars and seasonal festivals,” according to Scott.

If approved, lighting would be projected on top of some columns, along the guideway and onto the sidewalk using static “gobo” lights, capable of projecting simple images or even logos.

The equipment would be provided by Vancouver-based Lightworks at a cost of $228,000, money Scott optimistically hopes can be found inside the $24-million budget for the No. 3 Road restoration.

What is that concrete thing for anyways? Elevator?
I walk past that every day and can't figure it out either. I didn't know what that part was going to be though. Now that I know it's an unattached elevator shaft maybe I can make some sense out of it.

180-metre stretch??? o_O

They made such a huge fuss about it, we all had the impression it would be nearly all of No.3 Road or at least much more than 180-metres....

Almost positive that the UK building entrance is going to be reconfiged after construction.

wasn't the testing of the guideway lighting effects only between Alderbridge, and Lansdowne st originally? I don't remember plans for lighting of the guideway for the entire stretch of No. 3 rd.

I think we had all assumed that was the "test section".

It was neat when they were testing it. But I have to say, that when driving along that stretch on No. 3 rd, those lights were pretty bright, and it was unsafe for drivers at night driving by. If they could re-design it better, I'd be all for it, because it does liven up the city a bit more at night I'm all for that.

For the 180 meter stretch, how long is that, really? Between Alderbridge and Lansdowne? It would be better if it's throughout the entire stretch of No. 3 rd, but if it's not, I wouldn't complain too much, at least we're getting something, and they could always implement it on the rest of the system in the future, if they wanted to.

It'll probably look something like this...

I caught a glimpse of the LED displays on the Richmond-Brighouse platform today. It looks like it will display the estimated arrival times of the next two trains (from what I could make out).

It sounds like these displays give the necessary information as opposed to the skytrain ones. I wonder if when the new SkyTrain LCD screens are fully installed and in service will give the same information?

And I think those orange texts on the LED displays look A LOT brighter than the current ones on E and M-Lines. It's so much easier to see and read.

Also, I wonder if those flat-screen TV displays that are installed on select E/M-Lines stations will be installed on C-Line stations in the future.

is that 409 granville? if they put the main entrance on hastings then they would have to rename it... maybe 610 W hastings.

just joking though, in all seriousness, they probably wouldn't change the land title or address
