I came across a bit of information about the man who first lived (and presumably built) my house, back in 1882.
Nathaniel Boyd, who went on to become a Conservative M.P.
At the time, Mr. Boyd was a partner in Boyd and Crowe, a lumber business that operated at the corner of Maple Street and Point Douglas Avenue. Mr. Boyd lived in my house, while Crowe lived two doors down (or next door in 1882). Before 1882, Mr. Boyd was listed as living on Mary (now Martha) Street.
Future Prime Minister Arthur Meighan worked for his (unsuccessful) campaign when he ran for M.P. for Portage la Prairie in 1904.

I met with a man who lives on Roslyn Road, in what was the Kilmorie Estate's Gatehouse. Kilmorie being the home of Sir Augustus Nanton, one of the wealthiest Winnipeggers, who was knighted after raising some £100,000,000 for the Allies during World War One. He then came home and patrolled the grounds of Kilmorie with a rifle during the general strike. The house was torn down in the 1930s, but the Gatehouse remained.

Buflyer2000 has some new photos on his/her Flickr page, including this amazing view looking south down Arthur Street, 1895. In 15 years, this little collection of shanties and small commercial buildings would be unrecognizable, becoming the centre of the warehouse district, and one of the most physically imposing and compact neighborhoods in the city.
