Orleans Candian Tire test drives food
By THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO -- Canadian Tire is planning to open two experimental stores in Ontario that will offer an expanded variety of food and other consumable items as part of a new product assortment.

The two stores, which will be in Orleans and the Niagara region city of Welland, will test a new retail concept called the "smart store."

Canadian Tire spokeswoman Lisa Gibson said the stores will open in mid-November and will emphasize "productivity."

She said convenience food items, such as bread and milk, will be one small part of the new concept, which will offer one-stop shopping for customers.

"Our research tells us that (selling food items) will probably increase customer traffic to the store and certainly if someone's in buying other items, if they need milk or bread, it's a great opportunity to purchase it there," Gibson said.

Canadian Tire isn't the first large-format retail store to move into food sales.

Shoppers Drug Mart has described its Nativa Organics line of food as "the biggest success of any kind of product label we have" and Wal-Mart -- which has long sold some grocery items -- now includes fresh produce among its food offerings at some stores.

Retail analyst John Winter described Canadian Tire's move into food and other consumables as "very smart."

"When the customer is there, you try and sell them as much as possible of what they need," Winter said. "It will be a better service to time-pressed consumers."

It remains to be seen whether Canadian Tire and other large-format retailers' movement into food sales will hurt traditional grocery stores, noted Elizabeth Evans, director of the Ted Rogers School of Retail Management at Ryerson University.

There's something about the typical smell (rubber?) of a Canadian Tire which would put me off buying anything more than chips or pop there.

Shoppers Drug Mart preleases proposed Bank Street development
By Peter Kovessy, Ottawa Business Journal Staff
Mon, Jan 5, 2009 4:00 PM EST

The country's largest retail drug store is continuing to expand its presence on Bank Street.

Already named as the ground-level tenant by the developer behind new residential towers at Bank Street and Laurier Avenue, as well as at Bank Street and Gladstone Avenue, Shoppers Drug Mart has entered into a leasing agreement for a planned two-storey commercial building at Bank Street and Sunnyside Avenue, city documents show.

F&I Gateway Investment Inc. is proposing to build the 25,850-square-foot building in Old Ottawa South, next to the Mayfair Theatre, according to documents filed by FoTenn Consultants Inc.

Plazacorp Retail Properties Ltd. and Gendor Developments Ltd. are also listed as project proponents in the site plan prepared by Ottawa-based Zenix Engineering Ltd.

The site currently features an unpaved surface parking lot and two residential buildings, one of which has been converted into office space. All buildings would be demolished as part of the redevelopment.

Shoppers Drug Mart would occupy all of the ground floor space and a small percentage of the upper-level office space, according to the planning documents.

Shopper's is like an unstoppable virus. They are expanding their store here in Aylmer into the vacated space next door where there used to be a Marché Frais (Market Fresh).

it's too bad that market fresh place closed.. I think 3 pharmacies within two blocks is sufficient (jean coutu and Uniprix are right across the street).

Hey spotlight, I'm a little late in responding to you but this is what I heard at the Real Estate Forum in October.

Pretty soon we'll have this:

hey, it's red and white and Canadian...

The Harper government's gonna scrap the Senate and lease out its chambers, then contract out health care to SDM to avoid a deficit

Haha!

No, no.. it will be a stand-alone box on the Parliament lawn. Think of the plentiful parking to be had... just get rid of that pesky eternal flame and add some curb cuts to Wellington for easy access.

I wonder if PJC will ever move further west than Vanier. Looking at the map, it's easy to conclude that they only seem to set up in predominantly French-speaking areas... why not test the waters and try Westboro, Kanata, Barrhaven etc... take a bite out of Shoppers' turf?

Their entire real estate division is based in Longueuil.....they find the planning approval process in Ottawa to be very cumbersome, expensive and drawn out....They are used to small town Ontario where issues can be quickly resolved to get permits and in Quebec where they know the system. Architects that they hire are based in Quebec and are not familiar with the Ontario Planning process.

Ikea planning its biggest store in Canada

BY VITO PILIECI, THE OTTAWA CITIZENJANUARY 22, 2009 10:24 PM

OTTAWA -- Ikea has filed revised plans with the City of Ottawa that, if approved, would make the Pinecrest store the largest in Canada and one of the five largest Ikea stores in North America.

The giant Swedish furniture retailer has been trying to expand its Pinecrest mall location for more than five years. The current store is one of the smallest in the country and, as anyone who has been there on a busy weekend can attest, is not large enough to handle the number of people who regularly come through the front doors.

“We have recognized the need for a larger Ikea store in this market for some time,” said Madeleine Löwenborg-Frick, a spokeswoman for Ikea Canada. Ikea filed its plans with the city on Monday.

The revised plans call for a redesign of the shopping centre at Pinecrest and will quadruple the size of the current store, which is about 9,300 square metres (100,000 square feet).

Ikea owns the entire mall, which it bought from Zellers for $16 million in 1993, and leases space to a Sears Home Store, Michaels Crafts, Corbeil Appliances and a Linen Chest.

Ikea plans to blow up the current layout of the shopping centre. Sears will move to the west end of the plaza, more than doubling its showroom space. Corbeil, Linen Chest and Michaels will be lined up side by side in what is now the middle of the plaza. These three stores will retain relatively the same sized floor plans.

Ikea plans to demolish the east end of the mall and build a 37,000-square-metre, two-storey monster store that would span from Iris Street almost to the Queensway. The new store, which would be roughly equivalent to eight NFL-sized football fields, would back onto Baxter Road.

The company hopes to begin construction as early as the fall.

Neither Sears, Michaels nor Corbeil would return repeated calls about the renovation plans Thursday. There was also no word from Ikea about how long construction would take or how much the new development will cost.

“We are not able to discuss the details of this relocation until we have received the necessary approvals,” said Ms. Löwenborg-Frick. “Planning is still in the preliminary stages and it is premature for Ikea to comment further.”

City councillor Rick Chiarelli, who represents the ward where Ikea is located, is enthusiastic about the plans for expansion.

“There will be people lining up overnight for the grand re-opening,” Mr. Chiarelli said. “This is really exciting.”

Previous attempts to expand were thwarted by concerns that increased traffic levels would overwhelm the Greenbank/Pinecrest Road off-ramp.

However, Mr. Chiarelli said this time, Ikea began its design process by consulting with the public and several issues have already been addressed.

The back and sides of the building will be painted in more subdued colours than Ikea’s trademark blue and yellow. The store will be capped at two stories, and roadways off Greenbank Road into the mall will be re-worked to better handle traffic.

Barry Nabatian, general manager of Ottawa’s Market Research Corporation, believes the new building will cost about $30 million. He said the new store will do well, as it is the only Ikea in Ottawa or Gatineau.

“The market is very strong for their product and they have been doing well,” he said. “Ikea is unique, it has a strong customer base and its prices are generally good. I think they will benefit.”

I guess it must be. In any case, I wonder what will happen to them. Will they close down at that location or merely move around the parking lot?

As far as I am concerned, I won't loose any sleep if Montana's closes. That location, in particular, has pretty poor customer service. Outback was a ripoff for the food to money ratio. Milestone's only opened a couple of years ago, so that may have a lot of unrecovered costs etc

The big question in all of this is...................................where are the Nerds on Site going to have their breakfast meetings now.?

I think there would still be room for them- I think they are just out of the frame of the picture, at the bottom left.

It will be interesting to see the site plan when it gets put on the City website.

I wonder how there's going to be enough parking, with a store 4x the size eating up a good chunk of the existing lot. I don't see any underground parking in the picture.
