I moved to montreal after growing up in vancouver, and there are probably only about 10 - 20 starbucks for a population twice the size of vancouver. Agreed that it is nice to have competition, and we have some cafés that are modelled on the west coast style of super-high quality, that have more atmosphere and better drinks than starbucks, java-u and café art java spring to mind, but the truth is that 95 % of the so-called "small business café" are —.
I love the fact that no matter where i am travelling in vancouver, there is a plentitude of starbucks en route and i never have fear that if i arrive 20 mins early at my destination, i have a familiar place to have a latté. In montreal, if you are going to a new neighbourhood, it is IMPOSSIBLE sometimes to find a good café. Starbucks adds so much class and community and revitilizes streets in neighbourhoods that otherwise would be serviced by nothing other than a corner store.
I welcome the day that starbucks expands in montreal, i think it did wonders for street life in vancouver in more out-of-the way neighbourhoods and it will do the same here.
Oh and to add my 2 cents to another thread that was active last week, Tim Hortons DOES —!
