That is great news Future Mayor. Payson is a town with a lot of great ideas and very pro-restoration of historical structures. They have a Main Street with incredible potential. Do you plan on commuting, or renting a place down there?

congratulations on the new job in payson! i have 2 sisters living there, and they like it!

it will be neat to see how that city comes together as far as planning and things!

Photo bump, There are so many National Parks, Monuments, Recreation Areas, etc. in our State that sometimes this great beauty goes unoticed.

The Tushar Mountain Range is located in central Utah. Beaver, Piute and Garfield Counties.
Delano Peak (the highest) 12,169, Mount Baldy, Mount Belknap, Gold Mountain, and Copper Belt Peak area.

This drives me nuts.

I got this e-mail the other day from just some random guy. This wasn't the first time I've heard someone say this about our state.

"Haha utah is the butt hole of jokes throughout the US for the simple facts being that the mormons run utah like a 3rd world country and so many inbreds there that a lot of native utahns actually live 50yrs behind the times."

Wow, do people outside of Utah really think that about our state? That...
1. We are 50yrs behind the rest of the country?
2. That only Mormons live here and run this state?

Why do I feel that we ( People of Utah and Salt Lake City ) seem to have a lack of respect from the rest of the world or country. It could be with Sports or Development. Maybe it's not even that. Maybe people just feel that when it comes with entertainment that there is nothing here.
I remember a few years ago when New Orleans had Hurricane Katrina and that there was alot of people who lost EVERYTHING and they were homeless. These people had to go to other cities for shelter. I remember hearing on the news that there was one flight that were going to take these people here to SLC. Well once the people on the plane heard that half of them go off that flight. So your telling me you would rather be homeless and live in 3 feet of water then to have a food and a roof over your heard here in salt lake. To me, that was a slip in the face. When we try to reach out and help, but since we are salt lake city they are too good for us.
I love this state, but I get so sick of people thinking that this is only a "Mormon State." Sure maybe it was a 100 years ago, but today there are many other faiths and groups living here.
And then there's the fact that they say we are 50years behind drives me nuts also. What do they mean by that? That we don't have that many skyscrapers? Or that we don't have a real downtown?
I'm sure not everyone thinks that. But it seems like alot of people do. Sorry for that long rant. But do you guys know what I'm talking about?

There are several reasons not to worry too much about this. First, the guy who sent you this message is obviously not a winner, or he would have better things to do than send random, unsolicited, and insulting emails to strangers. Second, his tone and the quality of his writing provide further evidence that he's probably a nobody with no real influence in the world. Third, there are a lot of states with image problems. I don't need to list them all. Different states have different cultures and reputations, and that's okay. Actually it's good.

There's no doubt that Utah's image could be better nationally. Some people do view us as an ultraconservative backwater. That undoubtedly has some degree of influence on those who would move their businesses here. All we can do is keep improving our state and keep aggressively marketing Utah to tourists and businesses looking to locate here. Constant improvement of Salt Lake City helps. Normalizing liquor laws would help. Voting certain "legislators" out of office would help too, but I won't mention any names, Chris Buttars and LeVar Christensen.

I think that the guy in that message was being a bit extreme.

It is true, however, that Utah is poked fun at by many Americans.

Generally when someone thinks of Utah, they think of Mormons. This is the sad truth.

For example -

San Francisco = Gays
Utah = Mormons

Obviously, neither of these generalizations are true. Both are great places.

I've never involved myself in this ongoing "conversation" that, in general, surrounds the slc area because I don't feel like it has much to do with me as an individual and even less to do with the forum. But I have to say that I'm nearly speachless. Do you all really feel this way? -"despite the Mormons..." and "its not all Mormon..." So this guy's barely coherent email about the state you live in is in error only because there are more than just Mormons in Utah? Wow, I'm not trying to defend every action or position of one culture or religion (because I can't.) But I think one is hard pressed to justify this kind of intolerance. I'd like to think that humanity is taking a long and awkward course that "spirals" forward, but sometimes when I read this forum it just serves as evidence of our inability to do nothing but turn in circles!

The reason I made the sarcastic comment in reply to this post that I did is because this post above is offensive and yet no one here seems to see that.

The implied statement this post makes is that if San Francisco was only full of gay people it would not be a great place.

2008 was a good year I think for downtown development. As I said this time last year 2008 was the year of the cranes. And it was. We started out last year with zero cranes and now one year later downtown has 8 tower cranes and a 9th one on the way.

2009 I think will be the year of the new highrises popping up downtown.
