Even though it was a short preview, they did a great job with it. I hope someone posts it on YouTube.
The one or two minutes they did was very rosy. I think they even said we had great night life.

SHHHHHH.....don't spoil it for everyone.

Well, I'm sure we'll have great nightlife during the five weeks in February 2010 (or so I hope...).

^^ I certainly hope so. Vancouver nightlife is a joke...and you get a bunch of hicks from the interior coming to pick fights and get wasted. I've seen better nightlife in villages in Eastern Europe.

Well, there's no doubt that Vancouver nightlife will improve after 2010....hopefully, the city becomes more lenient with things like bars near residential.

I grew up in Vancouver, but have lived in four other countries the last 15 (or so) years and I am amazed at the number of bar fights that I see here.

Not only guys, but girls as well.

^^ Yeah, people just come to fight basically. The attitude of most people doesn't help either. When I was at a rock concert in Europe 2 years ago I was pushed by someone beside me into the person on my other side...and the guy ended up having his beer all over him. He wasn't happy, but saw I didn't do it on purpose and didn't start freaking out. I even offered to buy him a beer and he didn't want it. Here, if you bump into someone by accident, they become all confrontational and just want to pick a fight with you.

I hope that they will spread out the bars throughout the city instead of lumping everything into Granville street...every time I go there I have either seen a fight or had someone trying to start one with me. So I just don't go there at all. The only decent place I have been to Downtown is The Cambie and places in that area.

I would hope they open bars and clubs up along Broadway where there is lots of stores nearby, that way it wont upset residents too much. Plus there is plenty of transit and road access. Kind of like there is in Kits....but more accessible.
A couple years back, I went to a place in kits and had to walk for over an hour in freezing cold to get home...no wonder people drink and drive.

However, one of the key things missing in places around here is a party atmosphere. It always feels hostile and cold...arrogant and pretentious people acting like someone forced them to come.

Victoria actually has a very fun nightlife for the size of the town. It is more of a European pub feeling. There are plenty of fun safe places to go in Vancouver too, i have gone clubbing hundreds of times yet i have never been in a fight or even close to a fight. Maybe it is more to do with who you go with, also avoid clubs such as the tonic which are just gangster clubs. that is the problem, it is all the idiot gang member who feel they have something to prove. Vancouver is no more dangerous than many cities when it comes to the club scene. For example my brother went clubbing in Seattle where some gangster guy pulled a gun on him and stole his wallet. Assholes are everywhere.

^^ The fights are one thing (they happen everywhere obviously) but the atmosphere in the clubs is the main issue. I've always though of Victoria being for people 40+...but then again, I've never been there at night.

Well that's exactly the problem. Everybody thinks they are better than someone else=crappy atmosphere. I've lived in Vancouver most of my life, and I neither hate Toronto nor the interior people (except drunks who come here on weekends to cause trouble)...since I have never been to the interior or Toronto. However, I do notice lots of people hating Toronto here...not sure why exactly.

Cause I was born and raised in the west, so it's in my genetics and hammered into my psyce.

I hate Toronto, and Ontario sucks.

Post note: I say this even though i chose to join a regiment in Petawawa over Edmonton, Alberta. So base your judgement of my statements off that.

i've noticed some people in edmonton bashing vancouver as well. they seem to be the kind of people who tried moving to vancouver and were unable to adapt to life there.
this results in some kind of bitterness and jealousy for those who can.

the hate for toronto is ridiculous. toronto doesn't waste its time or energy hating vancouver. i think this is more "they are bigger than us, so we have to hate them" crap.
in turn, vancouverites appear like petty little brothers.

We hate Toronto in jest, we don't REALLY hate Toronto, but... God damn you just gotta hate them

But anyways, it is human nature to hate anything you aren't familiar with or is bigger / better than you. We all hate everything and everyone.

Humans are lovely creatures, really.

We hate toronto because its in our face 24/7 in all the canadian media. Its also overrated. When i went there for the first time i wanted to be blown away but was a little disappointed. Plus I think Vancouver is physically closer to Mexico than toronto.

And Toronto hates everywhere that is not Toronto, look at any skyline or picture thread and they stop at no chance to brag about their superiority. But then we should remember that "hate" is probably to strong of a word for how they feel towards us and how we feel towards them, i think every Canadian is actually envious of every other Canadian city. Simply we all want the good aspects the other cities have. Now having said that there would be endless people from around the country saying "we are jelouse of nothing, we are the best" etc... A perfect example happening right now is on the Canada section on "Future Canadian Skylines" between Calgary and Toronto. One person states that Calgary could become more dense than Toronto and then people from Toronto have to re-establish their dominance. It is really funny.

^^ Well this forum is hardly an indicator of the majority of people living in a city. I would like to have a chance to live in Toronto for a couple of months before passing a judgment on it. Would also like a chance to live in St. Johns, as it seems to be quite a laid back place...and it would allow me to experience Canada from coast to coast.
But I do agree that people from Toronto on this forum seem to give their city a bad reputation.

It is by a long shot. You could drive to San Diego, back to Vancouver and then back to San Diego in about the same amount of time it would take you to drive from Van to TO.
