About halfway on our driving quest to get from Charlotte to Savannah, we made a pit stop in Columbia, South Carolina. Neither of us had ever been there, so we decided to get all the way off the freeway and head downtown to check it out. I also had some curiosity about the fact that this is the state capitol that still flies a Confederate flag (being from the Western U.S. this is quite odd to me).
So there you have it, we found the capitol building (quite beautiful) and decided to roam around for a bit. We didn't do much more hanging around (other than driving through the USC campus a little) as we were excited to get to Savannah.

the capitol doesn't fly the confederate flag anymore; it's at a memorial on the state house grounds, along with a lot of other memorials (including the more interesting african-american memorial, not in these photos.)
if you'd turned around and looked up to your left you would've seen my old apartment in all its 1940s glory.
