Congratulations indeed! That's excellent! Maybe you can help plan out how Salt Lake City can be better used!

Mobius: Thanks for the data. So 2/3's of Utah's population growth is due to births and Projects is about to add one more. CONGRATULATIONS PROJECTS AND FAMILY.

In-migration accounts for slightly less than 1%, which is still very healthy.

I do owe BLM an appology, however. He correctly pointed out that CU has had 4 Nobel Laureates since 1989, 3 in physics and one in chemistry. The physics winners might possibly be explained by a NIST branch being located in Boulder, but the Chemistry prize was won by a native, if I remember correctly. My error is probably due to my horrible academic snobbery. I just never thought of CU or CSU as being great reserach institutions, although CSU is the western home of the Center for Disease Control and responsible for discovering the Hanta virus that terrorized the West in the late 1980's, although the person responsible for identifying the virus is Utah resident (Pleasant Grove) Dr. Dennis Trent.

9 Utah cities detail $1.6 billion in stimulus projects

Nine Utah cities have penned wish lists for this holiday season, but they're headed for Washington, D.C. — not the North Pole.
Led by a nearly $780 million request from Salt Lake City, Utah cities are seeking a $1.6 billion piece of President-elect Barack Obama's expected $600 billion to $850 billion federal stimulus package, according to a new report of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

In all, the U.S. Conference of Mayors is reporting there are more than 15,000 "ready-to-go" infrastructure projects in 641 cities, representing a $96.6 billion infrastructure investment at the municipal level.

The projects would generate an estimated 1.2 million jobs in 2009 and 2010, according to the report.

Salt Lake City's top priority is a $65 million rebuild of the North Temple viaduct, said Ben McAdams, Mayor Ralph Becker's senior adviser for intergovernmental affairs.

Federal assistance would allow the city to shorten the viaduct by 660 feet from 300 West to 400 West and widen it to accommodate the light-rail line connecting downtown and the Salt Lake City International Airport.

Design for the TRAX line is under way, and construction is set to begin early next year. Without federal assistance, it's likely an additional viaduct will be constructed for the line parallel to the viaduct, McAdams said.

"When you look at what (the federal government is) hoping to do with the economic stimulus package, that project fits squarely within the definition," he said. "It's a project that without some type of (federal) funding is not going to happen. It's an infrastructure project, and it's a project that really will assist in the redevelopment of downtown."
City officials say a rebuild of the North Temple viaduct and acceleration of the Sugar House streetcar project would have a "multiplier effect" on the local economy, creating more than just construction jobs.

Other cities eyeing the stimulus package include 5,900-resident Salem, which is seeking $345 million — most of which would go toward a regional wastewater treatment plant.

Orem has a $220 million wish list focused mainly on roads and water systems. The Utah County city is seeking $20 million each in improvements for Jim Reams Memorial and Richard Manning Memorial streets. Orem also is requesting $40 million for a community telecommunications system.

Provo has $107 million in "ready-to-go" projects, including a $25 million community recreation center and $20 million to partially fund construction of a railroad underpass at 200 West.

Brigham City also has listed $107 million in projects, including $24 million for a compost facility transfer station and recycling center.

Herriman's wish list totals $42 million, including $12 million for an energy-efficient City Hall. And Sandy wants $17 million for reconstruction of 1300 East.

Also listing projects in the report are Murray ($10.6 million) and Holladay ($8.3 million).

Who wants to stop ever 5 feet along North Temple when you are racing to catch a plane?
A waste not to use the existing rail line a few blocks south of North Temple.
Lowering the speed limit from 45 to probably 20 along North Temple.
and now they are SHORTENING the viaduct!

Not to mention having the train drop you off way the crap in the parking lot on the west side of the airport! That might be a bit inconvenient...I guess it could be worse, though. Oakland makes you take an "Air BART" bus for about 2 miles and across the 880 to get to the airport from BART. And they charge you 3 freakin bucks on top of the $5+ (depending on which part of the bay you're coming from) you already paid for your effing train ticket!! Oh-o! I better shut my mouth before UTA gets any crazy ideas!

You're totally right about the "station every 5 feet" comment! They could do away with the 8th West Station and the one just east of the 215.

As to the viaduct, I'm totally for that! I always turn down 4th thinking I can get on North Temple. Then I have to take that little alley way by the triad center, cross 3 lanes of traffic, then flip a U-ee at 3rd West. This will be nice!

As far as the Trax line dropping you off a bit away from the terminals, I would imagine that is to account for the proposed expansion of the airport at some future date--whether that is in the next 3 years, or the next 10 years; there has been a Master plan floating for the SLC airport for quite some time. With the station there, they can still service the airport while under construction (if it ever happens....) and then once the new airport/terminal is completed the station might be changed up a bit to incorporate it further into the airport itself.

Just my guess.

As for the north temple line having several stops... that trax line is to service that portion of downtown, not just the airport... It just happens to terminate at the airport. This line is going to do great things to rejuvenate all of north temple... It would be silly to have a Trax line running down the street with no stops at all on it.

You are so right about frequent stops. TRAX is plagued by this (one of the worst areas is right around the Gateway). UTA doesn't seem to think people will ride if they have to walk more than a block to a station.

As for using existing rail lines, however, this wouldn't be possible. TRAX rail lines are considerably more narrow that standard rail lines. A TRAX train could not run on a regular track (unlike a FrontRunner train, which can).

If they really are going to rebuild a shorter North Temple viaduct that is the sweetest news I've heard about this whole project! A rebuilt Norh Temple could really help define a gateway into downtown, and help traffic flow off of 400 West as others have commented. I actually agree with the location of every one of those proposed stations except the most important one- the actual airport terminal station clear out in the boonies. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the airport expasion doesn't happen for at least another decade. And once it does happen it may be aligned in such a way thats not even on our radar screen right now. So I say take the train to the present terminal. Thats good transit.

Hey, Winifred was my great grandmother's name.

She died a long time ago, back when my mom was five, and her funeral was held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church right around that area.
