Lower Mainland related, sorta.

I was supposed to fly to Vegas yesterday for a quick 2-night holiday with the girl. We flew over it and tried to land a few times, but low and behold, they got about 3-4 inches of snow at the airport, and we couldn't land due to that and low visibility. After 11 hours, we stopped off in LA for 2 hours and flew back to Vancouver! Yay! I can comfortably say that I no longer love snow.

Last night I noticed the ocean was freezing over in Coal Harbour. I was shocked to say the least. I tried to get pics on my phone but it was pretty dark and my phone isn't so great but hopefully these give some idea. All the white stuff around the boats is ice with a layer of new snow on it. I threw some rocks down at it and they would just bounce off without breaking through.

I also got to walk around on the pond by the Stanley Park Causeway. The small one on the other side of the Causeway from Lost Lagoon. There were some people skating and playing hockey on it. It was a pretty neat experience. I think it might be the first frozen pond I've ever stood on.

lots of heavy snow - the roads are pretty dead and the malls i passed look 1/3 as normal

pretty quiet out there - skytrain was really busy though

not as cold as yesterday - it was horrible yesterday - today felt warm in comparison

but the snow makesyou wet

I wonder if the palm trees some people have planted in the city the past decade have died and have to be replaced.

Palm trees planted in the last few months may be in trouble, but others should be OK. Only 2 or 3 years ago we had a few nights in a row around -12, and all the palm trees survived that. So while this has been unusual weather, it has happened before. Some of the palm trees in Vancouver are also much older than 10 years, i think the ones around English Bay and some in Edmonds may be well over 20 years old.

Today we are supposed to have a high of -1 and a low of -2, but its past noon and its still -5 at the airport. Im guessing thats a good sign for all the snow enthusiasts.

Also its amazing the difference in snow accumulation in the region. I have done alot of driving over the last couple days and have been everywhere from Abottsford to Vancouver Kitts area and the differences are huge. Surprisingly the Valley got alot less snow then Surrey, Surrey seems to have gooten less snow then Malairdville area of Coquitlam, Coquitlam got less snow then most parts of Burnaby and Kitts area. Actually East Van up around Central Park seems to have gotten the most snow(like usual), actually thats where I live now again(no longer by Nanaimo Kingsway area).

Anyways I cant wait for more snow, I got a 4x4 and it takes me 5min to throw on chains so its fun ripping it around the city.
