When are weekend hours?

I would think Weeknights would be Sunday - Wednesday, Weekends being Th - Saturday. Also, what happened to 4pm on Weekends?

Are there afterhours?

Here's what I'd like to see (if it isn't already the case). In designated Entertainment Districts (and other zoned areas):

Weeknights (Sun-Wed): 11am-2pm
Weekends (Thur-Sat): 9am-4pm
Non-Alcohol Afterhours (Fri-Sat): -7am [Party Until Dawn!!!] (maybe alcohol offered in Granville in afterhours during special times of the year)

with variances allowed for special events.

The entertainment districts being (mostly downtown, of course): Granville, Georgia, Yaletown [the SeeMore strip, old yaletown, Pacific], West End [Davie Village, Denman], Robson, Alberni-Japantown, Gastown, Chinatown [International Village]. Commercial Drive, W. Broadway, portions of Kingsway, SoMa, portions of E Hastings, southern Marine Drive, central Cambie, the Greektown Area around 4th, Little India area [only the Main St strip].

Now, this would be zoning regs; ALLOWING Dance clubs and bar activity during these times and at these locations but obviously the most concentration will be downtown in and around Granville.

Outside of those zones, then restaurants and bar places should probably close by 1am on weekends, 12am on weeknites i guess; to appeal to residents (unless there's a variance).

That said, the city should make it illegal for residents IN designated Entertainment District areas to complain and twart entertainment in those areas. They should be aware they are in an ED and should expect urban happenings or move.

We can have fun and residential coexist. In my opinion, with this policy - away goes 'No Fun City' and on comes World Class Entertainment Destination.

That's true, a lot of FMOV's business has been in Alberta. They even fly out a technician to Calgary every month to do servicing. Of course, Calgary has its own Ferrari dealership now that has been doing quite well, so that could hurt FMOV more than anything. The price of oil has gone down, but the spending in Calgary hasn't. BrinkHaus in Calgary was reporting on how they've sold many $40,000 Pateks, Rolex's and etc. in the past couple of months and are currently trying to sell $15,000 Faberge necklaces. The Bentley dealer in Calgary was also on the news saying how they aren't even open yet but have 14 orders.

Those with money (or at least enough to spend $300,000 on a car) aren't really the ones hurting!

Although going from have a portfolio worth 50M to 10M may still mean you have 10M in the bank, it's a heck of a haircut.

Everyone's being affected by this global meltdown... i'd almost say that those with more funds are being affected more... at least % wise.

That sort of decrease would be for some one exclusively invested in equities which is rare and idiotic. A diverse portfolio including bonds might have decreased 25% roughly so far in the downturn. But even then, most dividend rates haven't changed greatly... in other words, the rich have lost money on paper but retained their income and will regain their value when things turn around.

...btw, that info is from a friend of mine high in the banking industry.

insulated? in vancouver?

things are done badly here - we went to a restaurant yesterday - the windows were single layer glass and the cold air was coming in like it was open - it was freezing i had to keep my coat on the entire time

my windows in my apartment are single too and they just — in the cold air - i have to keep the heat on high to keep it warm - i had to get one of those window kit things the other day to see if it will help and its helped quite a bit but the windows are still cold

i don't think i have ever seen any double windows down here

well seeing how last night was the coldest night in 40 years we rarely need such insulation. Just like how many places here do not have Air Conditioning, simply because it rarely gets hot enough for such need. Of course sometimes it does, but not enough to justify such measures. Places like Kamloops and Kelowna are different, there one knows summers will be long and hot, and winters will be cold, so they need better insulation and Air Conditioning. Even Abbotsford has much more of a need for AC and double windows.

Those single layer windows are probably just old. With all the energy saving codes that have come into place recently, I'd be surprised to see single pane windows installed now.

Btw - ^^ nicest looking Safeway I've seen.

^bingo, industry standard would be double pane.

R values

single ~ 0.91
double ~ 1.61 - 3 typically

High performance double with air space and suspended films can get you closer to 4-5 if you pay for it.

Curtainwall is typically 2-4 with high performance going near 8.

we always double windows up in northern BC and the houses up there were always warmer

it might be "warmer" down here but you sure feel the cold more in the houses down here - without portable heaters I don't know what I do or my parents they have portable heaters too

my friend lived in an old building in the west end and he had to have a portable heater as well

my friends live in a highrise on the 11th floor and they have icicles all over their windows which are single

i don't really know anyone in new consturction down here so no idea what they have

The patio doors in my apartment sure make my place cold and drafty. I have the heat cranked and it's only a little warm...

My apartment tower has single pain glass as well, and yes there was ice on the windows (on the inside!) My girlfriend is cold right now but i rarely feel discomforted by temperature. During the summer when everyone was complaining about 30 degree + days and humidity, i feel fine, the same goes for right now. Only at night do i want to feel more warm, and i solve that easily with a blanket!

On a different note i went shopping today and i could not believe how dead both vehicle traffic and pedestrian traffic was today. The sidewalks and the streets were a complete mess, it looked as if no one was plowing or shoveling at all. The only busy places were metro-town and Pacific Center. It made me smile because todays weather proved to me why we do need a few covered mall shopping areas, Vancouver is not the tropics, we do have a long season of nasty weather most people would like to avoid. Of course today was a little extreme, but thank god for Pacific Center tonight, I was able to finish off my shopping list dry and slush free!
