A lot of Utahns who have religious influence love their music and their shows. They crave it. People who have seen Wicked in LA and traveled from Utah would definitely love it if it stayed longer.

Tickets didn't go on sale one day and then they were sold out the next. They went on sale one day, and within the same day they were sold out. My Dad tried to get tickets for my sister, but he had no luck.

A broadway-style theater is something that Salt Lake City definitely needs. Haven't we already discussed how much money it's going to pump back into the economy of SLC/Utah when it's all up and running? Are you guys forgetting that sometimes it takes money to make money? The money has to come from somewhere, so it's from the taxpayers then so be it. Eventually it'll come back to you, so you shouldn't have to worry about it.

Boise is 5 hour drive from Salt Lake but Boise has more than enough going with the arts, concerts, and sports that you can fill up your plans just staying in town. The Morrison Center hosts a lot of touring Broadway plays and hosts the major arts groups in Boise---that is our main performing arts hall.
North Idaho is obviously too far away from Utah for people to venture down, plus they(north idaho) hold their own with events anyways.
Idaho Falls is only a few, maybe 3 hour drive away from downtown SLC and S.E. Idaho and the Wasatch Front are connected by proximity and church influence.
I'm confused, are you talking about a specific church?

I had a couple of ideas for a possible theater complex layout:

I thought this was kind of an interesting compliment that locall forumers would enjoy.

Simon Cowell says he 'absolutely loves' Salt Lake City

http://deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,705271270,00.html

— ... given multiple opportunities in a conference call with TV critics, Cowell did nothing but gush about his visit to Salt Lake City for "Idol" auditions in September.

"You know what? I absolutely loved it there," Cowell said. "I loved the city. I loved the air. And, most importantly, I absolutely loved the people."

Yikes. This is the guy who's never been shy about expressing his dislike for anyone or anything. And there have been times when he hasn't exactly showered praise on cities that hosted "Idol" auditions...

Odd Fellows Hall's move in downtown Salt Lake put on hold

http://deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,705271294,00.html

Tom Smart, Deseret News

Odd Fellows Hall is staying home for the holidays.

The historic building's already delayed move across Market Street is on hold — likely until early next year — until the relocation route is properly prepared to handle the 5 million-pound load...

Odd Fellows Hall is 11 feet off the ground as it awaits an evaluation of its travel route and the load path for its move across Market Street. (Tom Smart, Deseret News)

I am certainly not against the theater project. I just want to see a very clear and specific financial plan before tens of millions of dollars are invested into the theater.

I also really think that some sort of private developer should be involved to help shoulder the burden. I think that by adding a housing element to the project that a developer would be far more likely to want to invest. (This is assuming that the economy begins to correct itself in the near future.)

I think the demand for Wicked is great but remember there are 52 weeks in a year. If a show can only sell out for 3 or 4 or 5 that still leaves a lot of weekends to fill. One or two shows a year are not going to be enough.

I would emphasize the eating out than the hotel stay. I believe most people from SE Idaho have some family they stay with in the SLC valley. Back in the high school days when my friends and I would bombed down to SLC to catch a concert there was always some guy who had an aunt or uncle with floor space and a bathroom. Now, I stay with my sister who lives in Sugarhouse. She and my brother-in-law each received master degrees from the U and decided to stay in the area. But great point on the food. There are some favorite eating spots to hit when we are in town, and after concerts the time honored midnight visit to Denny's on North Temple.

I think the entity that is truly taxing me is Smith Tix and Ticketmaster. I would hate to total the amount I have paid to them in my lifetime.

Delts I don't want to be negative but the local economy is suffering a great deal. I do some consulting on the side for a national firm and business in Utah is in a downward spiral. I would not agree that we are in the upper tier of good economies. I'd say we're right in the middle.

There are some states that are worse and some that are better. I don't think that we need to focus all of our energy on the bad economy but I do think its important to recognize its existence. With recognition of the fact we can press forward and continually look for the solutions. With denial comes few solutions.

I don't mean this as a lecture in any way. I really think there will be a great deal of improvement in 2009. I believe the new administration will make sure of that.

I'll hop off my soapbox now.

Delts145, this forum is a place to talk about good and bad, not just what you consider good. I think you get so wrapped up in your own narrow minded way of thinking that you forget about reality and what is really going on.
The local economy is not all that good, it is getting worse and people losing their jobs here in Utah, the Salt Lake Valley, are having a difficult time finding new employment. This is very true regardless of the strong job growth we have been blessed with. It is reality. Sorry. The whole nation is hurting and Utah is part of America the last time I checked.
I apologize if I upset your morning by posting this news article.
Please, please just relax.

Well, if I may interject... True, the economy everywhere is in the crapper and will only get worse before it gets better.

But delts does bring up some valid points in that Utah's is faring much better than I would say 80-90% of the nation.

Our most recent unemployment figure for the state is at 3.5% Nationally it is 6.5-7% And there are areas (like Riverside county in California) where it is north of 11% currently.

All Northernlad did was post a factual article about the economy. That's allowed.

Folks are welcome to discuss the article. You're welcome to question its data and its conclusions.

But attacking Northernlad because he posted it is not necessary. This *IS* a place to talk about the good and bad. It is *NOT* Delts' personal SLC advocacy page.

UtPlanner, I agree with you. I posted a negative article myself this morning, regarding the failure of a major development in our metro. My response to the post above really wasn't about the posting of bad news., it was about the history on this forum of that particular forumer. I should have just laughed it off. I do appreciate your obvious effort to be kind in your post.

History huh??? Delts, you are too much my friend because you have a rather bumpy rollarcoaster ride of a history on this forum but yet you think you are always right, even when you attempt to slap down anyone who does not agree with you or give you the respect you think you somehow deserve.
It is a good thing that we do not have any anti growth people from the valley participating on this forum or you would have a nervous breakdown.
It is obvious, the Salt Lake threads on this forum are owned and ran by Delts145! Hot Dog!!

LOL...Sorry, but Cottonwood and I made peace long ago. I think everyone knows I don't exchange banter with anyone but you. You really are my only love on this forum Northernladdy. I'll tell you what, I've deleted a couple of my posts, now why don't you delete a couple of yours. No need to waste anymore space on non topical trash.

That is true it isn't that bad in Utah yet, I think Utah will come out of this economic downturn okay. Northernlad you have valid concern but don't get so worked up about everything you see on the News or read in the morning paper. Denver area isn't far behind that 3.5 with our unemployment rate sitting at 4.3, luckily we have two major plants moving into the metro area bringing in an additional 25K Jobs. Much needed at this critical time. Anywhoo like I said I think Utah will be okay.
