Getting the lead out

"One of the great things about this building was the integrated whole of terra cotta from top to bottom," said project architect Wins Bridgman. But this summer, the building's terra cotta dome was covered with lead plating to solve a leakage problem that surfaced as long ago as the 1930s, when the original terra cotta was replaced. That work, however, didn't stop cracks from reappearing on the dome.

Terra cotta, a relatively new building material in the early 1900s, helped Winnipeg aspire to greatness in its architecture. Builders replicated styles of old-world stone buildings with moulded ceramic at a fraction of the cost. People expected a lot of this fired mix of clay and crushed brick, but it didn't have enough give for every use.

"Terra cotta on a steel-frame dome turned out to be a bad idea," said Bridgman. "The steel expands and contracts too much throughout the year. And in this case, the material can't live up to our expectations."

Nevertheless, Bridgman admitted a fondness for the revised dome.

"There's a kind of magic to the way the shape is telegraphed through the metal," said Bridgman, pointing out how the joints of the lead plate match the joints of the terra cotta underneath.

"First we had the terra cotta imitating stone. Now we have lead imitating the terra cotta. It adds another layer to the building's story."
too bad it doesnt mention in the article whether or not they were going to light this baby up at night along the lines of that lighting plan we heard about earlier this year.. that dome would look amazing lit up at night!

I really Love the Paris Building and the Winnipeg Electric Railway Building.. Random statement/question I wonder how the Curry Building would look if it had a couple more floors on it. Maybe 10+

On a side note, I was actually wondering what the Curry building would look like if we pulled a Chicago and built some glassy modern show piece on top of it and used the existing building as a base for a larger tower.

That was my thought exactly. I was attempting to do something in Google Sketch Up. Would be a HOT looking building. Does this building have the support base for some addition to it?

edit.

To add to it the building has some very nice angles on it.

Priorities: How about we first fill the sick hole where the McIntyre Block used to live.

Although I do think the idea of adding several stories to Curry is incredibly sexy.

I agree...

But, if I could develop a new tower on any lot in the city I would build it on that triangular lot across from the Walker.

The small size of the parking lot and its interesting shape would probably yield a very slim, sexy and angular design.

Not bad... hopefully they actually light it up like this at night. It looks pretty cool.

I notice that they call it the completion of the skywalk (???!!) .... which would infer that they don't plan on adding any future skywalks in the future. I definately do not think that this will be the end of skylink developments... I mean what happens when a new highrise is constructed across the street from the current skywalk, are they going to leave it unlinked??

I guess the statement could be considered accurate until they accually deside to build another link.

The Great Depression stopped the construction of the Art Deco Richardson building.

The Curry building was stopped by the outbreak of the Great War, shortly followed by Winnipeg's adventures in Bolshevism, which ensured that the investment that poured into the city prior to 1914 never returned after war's end.

Which development are you talking about? If this is about IKEA, it should be in the IKEA thread.

Why does the outdoor patio have to go. The skywalk doesn't encroach on the sidewalk. I think they did a great job of minimizing the look of it. I also like how they kept intact the angular cutout in the glassy Royal Trust Building - it is kind of a mini Winnipeg landmark (Lots of pictures taken there).

I heard another Cabela's, like the one in Grand Forks (mountain of wildlife, live fish ponds, etc).
