I would think that now WTC Utah has an international certification that the tower should be more in the works. More world recognition means that maybe people from outside of Utah wanting to work in International Trade and stuff could move to Utah. Didn't the plans for WTC Utah's Tower include a school/training center?

I'm think that within the next year or two, more plans and details will come out about any kind of World Trade Center Tower in SLC, and maybe in three years they'll have actual plans and proposals for the Tower with plans to build.

I think the 1 year completion is irrevelant, but I think the funds will be going to those areas that have experienced the full brunt of the recession, particularly job loss. Not only are the states submitting projects, but City's are as well. I don't see Utah, as a whole, getting more than 1 billion. I think a good chunk of that will go to projects that are in progress but will exceed the project budget. The UTA projects are the most short funded at this point, primarily due to the decrease in sales tax generated. This could put off the opening of any of these projects until 2015. The problem is, these jobs already exist and the number one criteria for Obama is that the projects need to create jobs. Not long term jobs, but primarily construction related jobs.

Plus, there is the whole political issue: we still are one of the reddest states out there. The dems in congress, particularly in those states that turned blue for Obama, will put a lot of pressure on the administration to get these projects done. Plus, congress and the senate will be putting the list of projects together and make a proposal to Obama. Don't expect the Utah delegation to have too many allies.

Just to add my insight:

Myself being a Right-Of-Way Specialist, and a consultant of UDOT, working on two of the projects that got shelved a couple weeks back (Vineyard Connector, and I-15 Core expansion) can tell you that many firms are greatly affected by the halt in these projects in fact those projects were what a lot of firms were looking forward to getting them through this downtime. A week after they put the projects on hold our firm did another strong string of layoffs. Our Engineering firm was a company of 50 people and going strong, the economy started to slow and lay-offs came. now we are down to 25 people and just scraping by. Thats how slow the economy is right now. The state robbed all of its other projects money to get the I-15 core project pushed through, thats how important that project is. The state is not going to redistribute the money either, so if Utah doesnt get any federal money dont plan on any new major roadways being built in the next while. Heck, if that money doesnt come here in the next bit you guys and the government may be paying my unemployment benefits JK

NOTICE OF OPEN HOUSE
SALT LAKE CITY PLANNING
December 18, 2007

Petition PLNPCM2008-00742 Rescue Mission of Salt Lake – West Salt Lake Master Plan Amendment to allow, on a limited basis, residential land uses in industrial areas.
The Rescue Mission of Salt Lake, applicant, has submitted an application for an amendment to the West Salt Lake Master Plan to allow for certain types of residential land uses to be located in industrial areas. The purpose of the proposed Master Plan Amendment is to facilitate the relocation of the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake’s homeless shelter. The homeless shelter is currently located at 463 South 400 West. The proposed location is 2945 West 900 South and is located in an M-1 Zoning District. The Master Plan Amendment is required because the M-1 Zoning District does not allow residential types of land uses and the West Salt Lake Master Plan does not support introducing residential land uses into industrial areas.

The Planning Division is requesting your input on the above proposal. The purpose of the public open house is to describe the proposed master plan amendment and take your comments. Your comments will be analyzed by staff and included in our report to the Planning Commission. The Planning Commission public hearing will be scheduled at a later date. You are invited to the public open house to be held:

THURSDAY DECEMBER 18, 2007
FROM 4:00 to 6:00 P.M.
SOUTH HALL FIRST FLOOR
SALT LAKE CITY AND COUNTY BUILDING
451 SOUTH STATE STREET
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH

Let's say Obama does kick in cash by, let's say, February 1st. How fast could things get off the ground where we'll see bulldozers driving around? I know the EIS and ROD are finished on most those projects, but I don't know how long it takes to get started.

It would not be a turn-around like a day and night difference, but companies knowing that there are projects coming online would be more willing to hold onto their staff and workers, preventing the unemployment rate from going higher.

That is the problem right now, is there isnt much light at the end of the tunnel. most companies are taking it day by day, but dont see a whole lot on the horizon.

Recession may change retail landscape across America

http://deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,705268150,00.html

While cautioning that the current economic woes will last at least a couple of "ugly" years before there's a recovery, the leader of Zions Bancorp.'s wealth-management arm said Thursday that the longterm ramifications of the downturn will "reshape the topography" of American retail.
George Feiger, chief executive officer of Contango Capital Advisors Inc., said Americans, strapped with credit troubles and struggling to repay debt, will consume less in the future. As a result, the country will need 10 percent to 15 percent less retail space, such as strip malls and department stores, and a corresponding decrease in the number of retail employees, warehouses and delivery and support systems.

"If you take this in, all of the sudden you'll realize, apart from its other ramifications, the whole landscape of America you've driven through to get here — the shopping malls, the department stores, the restaurants — all of this was essentially based on credit, on consumer credit, being able to consume 70 percent of GDP instead of 60 percent of GDP," ...

Finally, a report that doesn't sugarcoat things. I think people are way under appreciating the magnitude of this recession. It is far worse than the press is willing to report. The basic fact is that pretty much the world economy has been transformed from a cash based economy of the past to almost a complete credit based economy now. the ration of credit to cash needs to come back to about 1/1 or slightly higher.

Ok so that new Crane that I saw near the Salt Lake Skyline last week I found it again. This time I got a better look at where it is. I was a little off when I said it might of been around downtown. Turns out that it's around North Temple and I-215. I think it's being use for road work. It could have something to do with the Airport Trax line maybe.

That's a awesome looking model. I notice there are a few new buildings.

1. Wasatch Partners. (But it doesn't look like it's 33-stories.)
2. The really tall building on 100 S. and State.
3. All the new buildings for CCC. (Tower 2 is really tall)

That is the Broadway Tower on 300 South and State Street, not Wasatch Partner's Tower on 400 S. and State Street. The City Creek Center Portion of this model was the first model released, so it's outdated. If you notice, the First Security Bank Building, aka Deseret Building, is missing in this model, therefore, Dillard's is also included in this model.

Ditto. As a working member in the media (albeit a small one) we get criticized for either "sugar coating" or "embellishing" the situation.

In the end, the news business in this country is in big trouble. During the hot economy, owners slashed staff. I worry what will be left of news and journalism on the other end, once the advertisers start pulling out en mass.

I say this only to let you know that we report hand-to-mouth. Journalists don't have time to check facts anymore, at least in TV and radio, so we pretty much just rehash whatever report comes across the wire. One day it says "all is fine," other days "the end of the world as we know it."

I tend to side with you, personally. The real downturn still hasn't happened yet. I forsee a stall comparable to The Great Depression, which we will be calling "Great Depression II" in the months to come, if we aren't already.

Speaking of which, I see in the headlines this morning where Denver's Rocky Mtn. News is about to go under. If they can't find buyer soon they will close down.

Meridien at Capitol Park under construction -

This was a fairly significant project, which had kind of escaped us photographly on the forum. I was pretty happy to find someone who had taken a few cool pics while it was under it's major redo. Sorry though for the small format as they wouldn't copy in anything larger for me. They can be viewed in the link below in a larger format

following pics by arts enthusiast http://flickr.com/search/?s=int&w=all&q=meridien+condo+salt+lake+city&m=text
