Another Construction Photo

Since the contemporary construction photos have slowed down a bit, here's a 1910 panorama of the construction of Austin's original highrises:

http://www.helloaustin.com/Photos_Panoramic.Cfm

The intersection in the foreground is 6th & Congress. The Scarborough Building is being erected to the left; the cranes for the Littlefield Building are seen to the right. The completed mid-rise farther right is the Driskill hotel.

When you guys get a chance, check out the new esplanade on Cesar Chavez East of Congress. On the fence either side of the 1st Street bridge there are great photos of various floods on the Colorado. Nice touch!

I think that the economy has sapped a lot of strength. Maybe Obama can get it back; if not, come back in ten years.

A few pics from the top of the Brown Building from Sunday.

Monarch

Austonian and Ashton

21Rio

Digital Zoom of the top of the Capital

Got a new camera since my 2 TV's and my old camera walked out of the house a month ago. So I am trying a Nikon S550 now (black Friday sale). I think on such a windy day I needed to find the image stabilization setting, these are a bit fuzzy I think. Hope to take some clear day pics soon.

Downtown Rentals

So what's the stats on downtown rentals? Has the Monarch filled up yet? Any information on completion dates for the other apartment buildings?

From what I've seen and heard, the downtown rental market is not doing well at all. The Monarch is definitely not full, last I heard it was 65-70% leased. The prices have plummeted too, you can get a 1 bedroom on the 26th floor for the same price that 6 months ago you could get one on the 10th floor. Crazy stuff.

I wonder if the non-highrise rentals are feeling the hurt as well?
Does anyone have info on the Ashton? Seems that it has been topped out for a while, I'm dying to see some interior renderings and prices! If it will look anything like the Ashton in Dallas, I'm excited

I think the Ashton and Legacy are just working on the inside finishes, that takes some time, they both are just past finishing some outside work so the interiors will be coming along soon.

Actually this shot reminds me of a questions we had recently. With all the landscaping happening on the east side of Lamar, I wonder if this side will get some "interest". I was never wanting it..... until, well.....you know.... the other side looks so much better now! I love slippery slopes!

As the economic factors permit, I am looking forward to future development in the SW part of downtown...Gables, Seaholm and Green Water Treatment blocks and more smart infill projects that help link Spring, Monarch and 360 to the rest of growing skyline. W Hotel will go a long way in that regard.

At this point, I'm not counting on Ovation, Block 52, the AMOA museum tower and so forth until they actually break ground.

Unfortunatly, only the east side will have that treatment, at least for now. That is the detention for the Gables site across the road and the city actually required all the landscaping, even dictated the species that were used. They are also installing two 6' tall boxes to monitor the water in and out of the pond. I am assuming they want to know exactly how much is being dumped into town lake (LBL).

Hate growth in Austin more with a crane calendar

Austinite gave up fight against newcomers and joined 'em - sort of
By John Kelso

http://www.statesman.com/news/content/news/stories/local/12/05/1205kelso.html

(excerpt)

The calendar shows a color photo of Austin building cranes, or a building crane, for every month. No puppies. No kitties. No babes in hot pants. None of the stuff you see in your conventional calendars sold at that mall kiosk. Just Austin building cranes, sometimes next to a condo under construction.
