If anyone has access to the renderings for the reskin of the base of the Key Bank Tower and the new food court could you please repost them? Then we could post them on the front page of this thread where all the other renderings of the City Creek Center Project are posted.

At first I was starting to wonder if the Hyatt building looks like the one in the rendering. For some reason looking at T-Macs photo the building looked different to me. But after looking at the two it the building looks the same. The building is starting to take shape now.

I notice the other day while driving by that the Hyatt in Sandy is now open.

So I was coming home to the dorms tonight, taking trax through downtown, and I was amazed of the car and pedestrian traffic on South Temple, and the lack of that on Main. Obviously all of the traffic was for the lights on Temple Square. I was just thinking of the potential to channel and attract a good portion of that traffic down main.

City Creek Center will certainly help, and I hope that they put loads of lights throughout that. But I also wondered about putting loads more lights down Main. Things kinda like...

I think this would be a great way to connect Temple Square, The Gateway, City Creek Center, the Broadway theater, and Gallivan Center together. Gallivan isnt as well known for its lights as Temple Square. People would be drawn down Main street because of the lights and be lead to Gallivan etc.. I think connecting all of these destinations would benefit downtown alot.

The lights would hopefully draw people from location to location, thus bringing an enormous amount of foot traffic to Main Street.

Gallivan was jammed with people, and is very popular at Christmas time, as is Gateway. It wasn't that long ago when Main had allot of lights. I think we'll have to wait for projects like CCC and the theater to finish before we see a revival of lights and window display along Main. Not having the two centers at the North end is making a big difference in many ways.

As CCC gets nearer to completion. the buildup of business between the north and south ends should accelerate. There will need to be not only a revival of mixed business, but also a recommittment to window displays of the kind that ZCMI was famous for. Often ZCMI would compete with the venerable stores like SAKS in New York, and won many top awards. When Meyer Frank took over, I remember noticing a significant drop in the quality of the displays.

Anyway, all things in due time, but I don't think we'll see too much vibrancy along Main until 2012. CCC is just too big an 800 pound gorilla and we're just going to have to wait a little longer. It is encouraging to see the smaller, but important projects such as building restorations, club openings and projects such as 222, which is aiming for a viable street presence.

Downtown SLC building wins Utah's first TOBY award

The Enterprise

A downtown office building that was one of the first modern highrises in Salt Lake City has received a TOBY Award (The Outstanding Building of the Year Award) from the Building Managers and Owners Association, Utah chapter (BOMA),

170 S. Main, as it is known today, was built in 1983. It was once known as First Interstate Plaza, then the Wells Fargo Building. There are now 23 businesses located in the building, managed by Commerce CRG's Asset Services Division.

The building was judged on the following criteria: lobby appearance, corridor and restroom finishes, tenant suite finishes, utility distribution, elevators, community impact, tenant relations and other safety and structural standards. The building will now move to the regional competition, where it will compete with other buildings in its class. If it wins at that level it will proceed to the national TOBY competition later in the year.

This year is the first year in which the TOBY awards have been presented in Utah. The 170 S. Main Street building won the award in the 250,000 to 500,000 square foot category.

170 S. Main has always had the same owner. It is held in an investor portfolio advised by the U.S. real estate business of UBS Global Asset Management.

Just my two cents about the LDS Family History Library on North Temple...

I think the attempt to surface City Creek water is good, but it just looks very shoddy. Like Vegas-fake. The water is slow-moving and the channel is just not very big. Perhaps this is for safety reasons. Lord knows all the little, unattended kids running around on General Conference day...

But another thing. The rocks that line the creek seem to be red rocks. I would have expected some kind of granite, sort of in line with the rest of the LDS what-have-you in the area. But then, I thought, "maybe these rocks are from Red Butte Canyon?"

I'm not really sure what I'm going for here, just throwing some salt in the game, if you will.

I'm not seeing the red rocks in these pics by T-Mac of the unfinished portion. The stone isn't the same granite used in front of the conference center though. Probably has allot to do with the difference in stone used on the library vs. the conference center, which is granite. There's still allot of work to do and I'm sure when it is finished, it will be every bit as attractive as the finished section to the west.

Water isn't running on this finished portion in front of the conference center for some reason in this particular pic below. I've never seen it without water, but still IMO this is one of the coolest curbs I've ever seen anywhere. If the library curb looks this good when it's finished, I'll be very happy. The only red rock I can remember would be at the park on the corner of State, where it is used on the bridges etc.

About the red rocks at the FH Library: they aren't the kind of red that Rice-Eccles Stadium has on its facade, but I remember these being redder than what I would expect. Orange, perhaps, but strikingly different from the rest of the rocks in the block. I guess it's not bad to have variety, but it's such a weak stream it makes me wonder if the city needs to give the Creek a little Flomax

I went hiking to a peak above the Huntsman Cancer Inst. last Wednesday, and the air quality was sick!

Is it like that today? I mean it's absolutely beautiful here in Utah Valley. I did notice that toward evening for a couple of days there seemed to be a drift of smog encroaching upon the Oquirrhs to the West. It seemed to be coming from the Salt Lake Valley.

Here is some fact of the Port O' Call Building I got from their website.
"Port O’ Call opened in 1989, with just the Main Floor. The building itself was built in 1912 so you can imagine the older elements that create the homey, comfortable atmosphere you’ll be feeling. The signature bar is older than the building and some rumors have it that it was carved in Europe. Looking closely at the two inner pillars you will see that they have been replaced, once being bare breasted females before someone decided they might be a little too risqué for Utah and they have been replaced with only the face and head showing.
