Nice design. Do you know if they be placing a green space on the top if it is a flat roof?

Consultant envisions 'The Fundy Vortex' as new name for Reversing Falls
Name change considered for Saint John attraction
Last Updated: Tuesday, November 18, 2008 | 10:34 AM AT Comments0Recommend1
CBC News
The Reversing Falls could soon be known as the "The Fundy Vortex" in hopes of sucking tourism dollars into Saint John.

A name change is just one of many suggestions being considered as part of a plan to make the Reversing Falls a world-class destination.

Forget competing with Magnetic Hill in Moncton, instead Harvey Sawler, a tourism consultant, said Saint John needs to think bigger with Reversing Falls.

"You're competing with the Art Gallery of Ontario that opened on the weekend. You're competing with the Dinosaur Museum in Drumheller, Alberta," Sawler said. "So this is not a neighbourhood issue. This is a global if not a national or at least a North American competitiveness issue."

Reversing Falls is a natural spectacle when the world's highest tides flow in and out of the Bay of Fundy through a narrow gorge. Twice a day tourists can watch how the tide forces the St. John River to reverse its flow.

Sawler and his team were hired by the city to figure out ways to make Reversing Falls a world-class attraction.

Sawler consulted with people across Canada and he said he heard one consistent theme arise when asking about whether they would consider coming to New Brunswick as a tourist destination.

"I never think of going to New Brunswick except to get somewhere else," Sawler said he was told repeatedly.

The interim plan is to change the face, and name, of Reversing Falls, with things like moving the restaurant, putting in a zip line, where tourists could ride over the river in a harness.

The costs for the project is estimated at $20 million. The public can see the proposed changes at the New Brunswick Museum on Tuesday night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Coun. Joe Mott sees the Falls from a unique perspective and he believes the consultant is onto something.

"Being a tour guide, and a tour guide for four years in the city doing bus tours, I can tell you up front that you're right on the money," Mott said.
The Fundy Vortex? That's a terrible name

AGREED!! quick! stop them! lol
but seriously: [email protected]

Think of the repercussions:
- "Fallsview Park" becomes "Vortexview Park"
- "The Falls Restaurant" becomes "The Vortex Restaurant"
- "The Reversing Falls Bridge" becomes "The Vortex Bridge"

Now American cruise ship tourists will not only be disappointed that there's no backwards waterfall, they'll be even more disappointed that it's not actually a gateway to another galaxy.

Why don't they just call it what it is "The Reversing Rapids"!!!

Abbey St. Andrew Variances

The variances needed for the Abbey St. Andrew project were approved by PAC earlier this evening.

I actually kinda like Vortex Bridge. Makes going across it sound so much more exiting

Let's face it, folks. anything with an X in it sounds cool.

Plus we could usurp Moncton as the concert capital of New Brunswick by attracting a lot of psychedelic stoner bands to come play "in the Vortex"

Moncton can keep the huge headliners. We should aim to become the hippy jam fest capital. Imagine this: the sunseeker in Kingston, the Charlotte County festival that tends to name change, followed by the Billion Gallon Rush Vortex Ball.

Urban Renewal Book

A local writer has self-published a book of photos and news clippings that explore the urban renewal project that reshaped the city from the 1950s to 1980s. The book, Urban Renewal Saint John: A City Transformed , is available for order at http://www.ursj.ca/.

I've flipped through the book and have been impressed by how much our city changed in those years.

This book is timely, considering that the city is currently tearing down some old buildings in favour of a the urban redevelopment scheme that is Peel Plaza.

That last one kind of looks like a Sobeys. I seem to recall the new one in Moncton has a similar brick pattern, plus the loading docks in the back.

Yup, it's the new Sobeys on the Golden Mile. Hopefully the rumours are true about the old Sobeys location being converted into an Empire Theatres location, as that would be great for the West Side.

According to the paper, both are staying open (for how long, I don't know). The Loch Lomond Sobeys being a bit redundant is closing though. That's the one I like best since I don't need roller skates to go from one end to the other.

That's no fun, I like that one! Maybe they'll re-open a Sobeys Uptown at some point, I'm sure no one would object to them kicking Giant Tiger out of Prince Edward Sq. and taking the space for themselves.

Are there going to be any stores left at Loch Lomond now?

Don't disrespect the GT Boutique. I really think the best thing that could happen to Prince Edward Square involves a bull dozer.

Wink Quispamsis Streetfront Shopping?

I would love to see a mall like this in Quispamsis someday. Seeing how the town has no traditional downtown feeling and lacking pedestrian traffic, I thought it would be a neat concept to create a fake downtown in the form of an outdoor pedestrian mall with a little European flare. I think it could be completely mixed-use with upper-level hotel rooms and condos. Stores are serviced by a service road hidden by a line of trees from the parking lot.
Anyone out there with millions of dollars interested in building this? lol

Cafe

There is an interesting conversation going on at Giraffecycle about where one would local a cafe in the city.

A detail that came out (that I didn't know) is that Nougatine and Chocolate has closed.
