Hmmm.... Makid, it's definately exciting to think about, isn't it. I think that will be our next big CCC type forum buster.

I am still hoping a 1000 room convention center hotel is built somewhere on the north side of S. Temple (former Greyhound bus station location?)

I just bought the book "Salt Lake City: Then and Now". It takes a historical photo and shows what it looks like now. It also gives some very interesting tidbits of information. Picked it up at Costco. They mentioned that the original LDS Church Office Building proposal called for the building to be 8 stories taller than it currently is.

It also has a picture of Commercial Block/Beason Building on Regent Street and 200 South. The mentioned how it was torn down in 1959 in front of 200 onlookers because Walker Center needed more parking. The parking garage we now have was designed by SOM.

It also mentions that the Dooly Building which sat where the Shilo Inn currently resides, was torn down in 1964 amid protests just so that the owner of the property could lower his property taxes. He cited that occupancy in the building was down and a poor economic environment. It was a vacant lot for several years before the Shilo was built.

Overall, a very interesting book.

I've read that, TMac. It is an interesting book. It's a bittersweet thing. Lost some spectacular buildings, but it's really cool to look at the growth and progress of SLC. You take the good with the bad I suppose.

The Gallivan Center is getting some new improvements.

Edwards Daniels Architects put together these rendering concepts.

I dont know how creditable the blue glass tower and the other tower by the Walker Center are. I imagine that they are shown only to add excitement and potential development.

Is that blue glass tower on the Carl's Jr. site? I like it... Let's do it.

"Salt Lake City: Then and Now" I'm going to have to add that to my Christmas wish list. LOL

Also I love those renderings. Thanks.

Yeah, that glass tower would be nice, as would the WTC Utah. But, if those ideas never come to pass, here's my idea of what should go on 200 South and State Street where Carl's Jr is.

It's a condo tower (looking north at the building), with ground-level retail and built-in parking. It also has some parking underground, but you can't see that.

And the Carl's Jr never really left the spot in my drawing, it just moved slightly.

Cool drawing Blaze. I like that you accomodated a curved design facing State. I'm all about street and corner presence and site lines.

blazefirelight. I love the drawing. I can see the parking garage. It's right above the Carl's JR.

My father-in-law works for LDS Business College and I asked him if he knew anything about those two blocks and his reply was that he asked Bishop Burton about them and he was told to check back in 2012. His feel was that the LDS Church wasn't planning on anything anytime soon. I imagine much of that will depend on the economy when CCC is completed.

I think the city should just tear down that ugly two story building to the north and then have a developer build a tower that wraps around the Zions Bank. That would be a great place for a new tallest. IMHO.

You never know there might be a nice historic facade lurking underneath that 60's facade on the building to the north.

Now if a developer could make a new building work simply by wrapping the zions building on the S. next to the above buildings and on the north from the bank to the Dinwoody Building (which also needs a facade restoration) that would be very cool. Maybe it could be stepped up from the Main Street side and still be the new tallest.

I would like to see it too Wasatch. I think though that the LDS Church is just not interested in having a hotel on any land that they own. It seems as if they have made a concerted effort to get completely away from the hotel business.

I agree. I don't know if there is a nice facade under there, but I've been inside those buildings and they are crumbling. If there is a nice facade maybe they could preserve it somehow, but the rest of the building is ready for the dump.

I went running along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail above the U and the zoo. Here are some pretty crappy pictures of the city etc, with my phone.

I wish I had a better, smaller camera, and a less hazy day, but it was great up on the trail!

Besides Viperlord, did anyone know that there was another web site almost exactly the same as this one? It's called www.skyscrapercity.com. This is the link for the salt lake city thread. Not much on there. Check it out.

Great photos. I always wounder about these buildings. I don't know much about them. What year were they built, how tall are they? Do these buildings have a name? I'm guessing there Condos.
