lol... that's cute...
there certainly is a culture war going on in this country, and its sad that the real issues are clouded by picking a side and just fighting tooth and nail without understanding on both sides. Gay marriage wasn't going to cause all those things to happen that the Yes promoters said. And due respect for religious beliefs can and should be tolerated as well. I just think its sad that bandwagon mentality is happening now, where families and individuals are now going to feel at odds whether they be church members or GLBT. If the vote stands, or if it is overturned (which I think it will be) after all this.. in the end.. we all lose.. to some degree

I know that this involves SLC because there was a protest here last night. But please continue all Gay rights discussions in the following forum.

The Salt Lake City Council meeting coming up here next week on the 13th could be interesting to see if anything new comes about from the developers: Does anyone know if it is open to the public?

Thanks Rmarkosian for your recent coverage of Trolley Square. To me, Trolley Square has always represented the eastern physical boundary of Downtown Salt Lake. I know different people have different definitions of downtown boundaries, but I tend to look at downtown as what I feel it is becoming, rather than what it has been. I have always felt that Trolley Square was underdeveloped and thus am extremely positive with this major upgrade. I hope Trolley Square's next ten years will see major improvements and expansion on the south side also (parking lot area on other side of 600 south). Also, I am one of those that would like to see the ambiance of Trolley Sq. continue it's expansion west along 300,400,500 and 600 south.

Trolley Square opens new parking garage

http://deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,705261425,00.html

A 200-space parking garage on the west side of Trolley Square opened Friday for the holiday shopping season, part of the shopping center's $60 million renovation and expansion project...

...The top level will have 33,000 square feet of retail space. Ground is expected to break on that project this spring. Parking is on the street level and a new underground level.

Seven tenants have moved to new renovated spaces inside Trolley: Brass Key Antiques, Cabin Fever, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Secret Garden, The Spectacle, Trolley Taffy Station and Ypsilon.

Next for the renovation is construction of a 53,000-square-foot Whole Foods Market. That construction is expected to finish by spring 2010.

Oh, I just saw Viperlord's post.
To be fair, the no on 8 was spreading lies themselves. It's the political way. That missionary commercial that no on 8 was showing in CA was absolutely ridiculous and borderline religious bigotry. That's all I will say on this subject.

everyone is always the victim... Mormons can play the part just as well as gay people... in fact the mormon church has been doing it since it's founding.. it's quite a clever tactic.. because no matter how wrong the church is or how much pain and hurt in people's lives the church causes.. nobody can ever say anything bad about the church.. because it automatically is martyred...
every religion does it. Viperlord put the post up earlier in the thread.. we should discuss it there... there's many people sharing their views and opinions there....

The fact that everyone wants to get their panties in a wad over just the Mormon church is ridiculous. If they are going to get angry at one Christian denomination, they need to get angry at all of them.

Here are the facts, the Catholic church was just as involved and joined the LDS church as well as most other Christian denominations in fighting this. Why? Because it is against what most Christians believe by way of the Bible's teachings. These churches have just as much right to state their opinion in a Democratic society as those that were against Prop 8.

If those that were against Prop 8 really want to point fingers to who helped pass the proposition, look no further than Barack Obama for bringing out the black voters in high numbers in California. Black voters voted in favor of Prop 8 71% to 29% that voted against it. Latinos also voted in favor of prop 8 something like 54% to 46% (probably because of the influence of the Catholic Church)

Mormons make up no more than 3-4% of California's population and wouldn't have made that much of a dent in the overall numbers (even though I do understand they provided a portion of the marketing budget.)

Those are the facts and I will comment no further on this topic.

I think people are protesting the money that was put towards it.. not the actual numbers of votes. which is why they are pointing at the LDS church.
But I think we should go to the proper thread to discuss it....

Wow. Nice try anyway Viperlord. Everyone wants the last say. I think both sides were in the wrong in one way or another. But hey, one good turn of intolerance deserves another.

Prop. 8??????

Thanks Viper Lord for trying to get the thread back on track. Thanks also to T-Mac for smartly inserting pictures, I think in an attempt to get the thread back on track.

The problem with politics on this thread is that for those of us who live outside of Utah, we don't care. I didn't know about Prop. 8 until election night results. Then it was buried in news about similar props in two other states. It's not a big deal, even if it did take place in California. Much ado about nothing.

Yeah, you're wrong. They're protesting the LDS Church because they funded this thing more than any group out there. The Catholic Church might have come out in support of it, but they weren't throwing millions of dollars at the proposition.

You know, I'm fine with the LDS Church expressing its opinion, but they should get their tax exempt status revoked by the United States government. If it's going to use its power in the political realm, they should be forced to pay taxes, since there needs to be a clear line between separation of Church and State, something the LDS Church has never recognized. Come out against it, that's fine, but if you're not a taxable entity and you begin wielding your power to make political statements, then you should be forced to pay taxes, because you cease being just a Church and you become a political organization.

This also goes for the Catholic Church -- to which I am a member of.

Maybe it isn't for you, but let's hope one day the American people don't decide to ban marriages between interracial couples.

I'm guessing something like that, though, wouldn't go over well. Even though in the 1950s and 60s, interracial marriages were actually opposed by many Americans and many religious groups. But it's only the gays, so fuck 'em!

Completely agree Comrade, its fine to be an intolerant bastard as long as you pay your taxes as such (Sorry Viperlord, I don't visit much, but I'll go to the other site for continued discussion). This issue reminds me of a Churchill quote to the effect that democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others. I think this issue will take some time for people to get comfortable with, but I'd expect this to be overturned within 12 years. At least in the meantime I can get medicinal marijuana in Michigan
