I think this is good news. The building they are in is probably the ugliest building in downtown. This might give a chance to either tear it down or undo the ugly facade for a new use.

Orlando, It is going to become O.C. Tanner's new flagship jewelry store. I would hate to see them have to tear Zims down. Obviously, that use to be a 19th century feature downtown with one of those great old Italianate fronts. It would be great if they could keep the building for residential lofts and restore the front. It might be difficult though, because that location is prime for a large tower, given the tiny lowrises to the immediate south.

Thanks for the pics of O.C. Tanner Ark, those are our first from the east side. I hadn't realized so much was going on on the inside. Pretty much a complete redo. Kind of like a mini State Capitol project. Glad to keep that beautiful old shell intact though.

This isn't really news, but I figured since it's regarding a building that was recently renovated, it's sorda relevant..
Anyway, I FINALLY finished my Walker Center SketchUp model. Chickidy-check it out and let me know what you think.

Your models are great. I don't have the patience to do such complex models, but I enjoy it when you do so that I can plug them in around the crap that I come up with to make it look more realistic.

I'm guessing that you did most of the models I used here:

Just a note. I decided to walk to work today and took a stroll up 3rd south. I was impressed how many of those older apartment buildings have been/are being redone. And quickly. They look quite nice. Some of them had been in sad disrepair, but I guess as a result of the huge demand for apartment space downtown, they're all being spiced up rather quickly.
Also, there's a lot next door to The Other Place Resteraunt just before you hit 5th East (I think) where one of these older buildings stood. It's been torn down and the spot is being cleared. I noticed it the other day, and crews have been busy on the site each time I've passed it. Anyone know what's going on there?

It might be the site for the "Lexie Tower Project" It's around that area.

Yeah, Orpheum did pretty much all of the good ones. The only ones I have credit for are the really crappy white ones. Like the Qwest Tower, and the City Creek mock-up. And the Proscenium, if anyone ever bothered to check that out. I just made that because I was bored.

Yeah I can see 7 models in that picture that I created.. some are better than others. Don't be discouraged if you think yours aren't as good, all of my first models were total disasters! Like all things (except maybe donating your body to medical experiments), you get better the more you do it.

Thanks for the encouragement, I'm glad you find them useful. I'll keep adding as many as my free time and sanity will allow..

NYC Rick, You usually provide very nice insight into many subject on here, but other times you are just such a complete pessimist, looking to shot other peoples opinions and hopes down. So what if he modeled a new Marriott and placed it in that image!

This isn't something that I added to google earth, or even to the sketchup 3D warehouse. Its just a model of a hypothetical new hotel. I added the other buildings from the 3D Warehouse and posted a screenshot of it here a few weeks back.

I'm not placing incorrect models on Google earth, just using it to see what some things would look like in the skyline.

Anybody can draw any building in SketchUp, and submit it for review. Then Google determines which ones to place in Google Earth based on accuracy, complexity and correct placement. Hope that helps

Hey, Ark: When I first saw you design for a convention-sized Marriott, I thought: "Naw, I don't like it...It looks too much like a Marriott." But now I see it placed in context, it looks good...which is the exact reason why I am not an architect. Nice work.

U. picks an out-of-state firm for stadium-lot development

The University of Utah announced Tuesday the selection of an out-of-state developer to complete its new Universe Project.

Inland American Communities Group Inc., which has offices in Tempe, Ariz., Dallas and Atlanta, was selected to construct the mixed-use, transit-oriented project on the southwest corner of campus — an area Inland calls an "edge of prime location."

The Universe Project will occupy the 7.9-acre parking lot directly west of Rice-Eccles Stadium, which is adjacent to a TRAX light-rail station. Proposed uses of the site include administrative offices for the university, housing, public and student parking as well as some retail stores.

Perez said goals of the project include taking advantage of the present mass transit options, creating a strong connection between the campus and neighboring community, enhancing the appearance and function of the location without detracting from the current functions of the area. It also is designed to encourage interest in the campus, making the Universe Project a "portal" to the university community and a "gateway to Salt Lake City."
