Survey Citizens strongly endorse deal that would bring Irving Oil's world headquarters to Long Wharf

C5SANDRA DAVIS
Telegraph-Journal

"Nearly eight in 10 residents support Irving Oil's proposal to build its world headquarters at Long Wharf."

Was there ever any doubt?

Some new Retail

We tend to not focus so much on the retail in this forum with all of the excitement around the larger projects, but apparently it was in the paper that Aeropostale, Lidz, and some other clothing store are all going to be opening their first location in NB in McAllister Place.

None of them interest me, but Aeropostale is a different slant on American Eagle/A&F.

i'm surprised it's not higher than 8 out of 10! true, there may be some debate over the building shape / height / design, but all in all it's a huge asset from the perspective of tax revenue (2million / year), population influx, adding to the waterfront skyline, fort latour renovations / second cruise ship berth....

East Point Rumour

I heard from a pretty reliable source that all ground preparation on the sight (which also includes the are that the new Cosco is being built) has ceased. You might have noticed the big doser parked at the top of the hill for a while? Well thats the contractors, and he refuses to move it until he gets paid for work done. Maybe the cost of the flood lights up there broke the budget ha ha. Anyways from what I heard there out of money. Hope it isnt so though. Its a great development.

I heard something similar. Basically, that the project is dead. I wouldn't say that the sources I have are the most reliable in town when it comes to this specific development, however I am hearing stuff nevertheless.

Oh, and the Long Warf Irving development is at least 2 (probably 3) years away. I posted this previously. I am confident - as the general consensus is - that this project will happen however, it will be a bit before we see any physical movement on the site.

Does anybody have some photo updates of the new hotel at the old Church site by the throughway?

I heard last night that the parking lot on the corner of Canterbury and Princess will be fixed up with a new historic looking retaining wall.

Yup, this is true, I have a friend who is working on he project. I would much rather it be an in-fill project, but an improvement is an improvement I guess.

Yeah just saw that for the first time the other day. I'm assuming it's not just paint and that it is some sort of special concrete sealing product to help prolong the life of the bridge in the face of its harsh maritime existence, but I really don't know anything about it. Looks good though.

The two houses on the corner of Crown and Princess and Crown and I think it is Leinster got torn down today. Spoke to the builder and he says they are putting up townhouses. He is expecting to get 12 in there and they are going to start with 6 and see what happens from there.

Fingers crossed for an exterior that isn't ugly...

Thanks for the pix...I haven't been that way in some time, so it's good to see what's going on there. Does that new route bypass St. Stephen?

Yes...they're twinning the existing St. Stephen truck bypass and building a new bridge just up from Milltown.

I have been through this a couple of times and the changes on the other side of the border should improve traffic flow as well. They have added a second lane as well as a traffic circle.

Tannery Court

The development proposed for 185 Carmarthen Street has run into some opposition. I've heard several complaints that the 51 unit building, which will be rented as part of the provincial low income rental subsidy program, will attract drug problems to the area. People are also concerned that the development isn't mixed and should have included units for families.

On the other side of the debate the developer has said he doesn't think he could rent market rate apartments in a building with low income non-elderly singles.

The project was granted some zoning variances, but aside from a lack of parking and a few setback issues, the project wasn't that far from what is normally allowable in this area.
